Are there any out there? They all seem geared towards children. I am 38 years old and the last MMO I enjoyed was pre NGE SWG which has been 10 years ago it seems. I have tried countless new ones when they are released, but each one of them have failed miserably in my eyes. I tried the Rift demo a week ago....sucked. My ten year old leveled to 20 in a few hours. Conan sucked as well. Was excited about Vanguard, but they really screwed the pooch on that release along with the unrealistic requirements to run the game.
I mean seriously, is there any MMOs that offer a remote challenge or consequences for stupid decisions? I know EVE is out there, but SCIFI is not my genre of preference(other than Star Wars). I guess it all just comes down to the companies bottom line. MMOs have basically followed the same path as American music. They both have fallen into mediocrity because of the ignorance of the masses.........sad.....

Istaria and Ryzom com to mind. Both lesser known, both Indie, neither target the pop crowd. Never heard anything of technical failings from either, so I wouldn't expect a bugfest that comes with some Indie titles.
I played a bit of Istaria and like it. It's the sort of game where you will need to read up a bit on the mechanics so things will make sense. I never made it into Ryzom. One of those that sits on my to-do list. More than a few individuals here on the forum have mentioned it with high praise. That's a good sign, these people don't like much :-)
WoW, LotRO, Rift, and others are played by many older adults. What makes you so intellectually superior to the point where you cannot play those games?
Pretty sure he's going for a challenge and depth with consequences for your actions, not Intellectual Superiority. Reading comprehension is your friend, friend.
As someone as the same age as the OP, I long for a game like that, though one I can play and enjoy still and keep my adult life.
Ryzom is pretty cool. I had to laugh though as I went out into the Silan forests and saw a fellow homin named 'Cumdumpster' on a game with 'a naming policy' and 'a focus towards role-play'. Should have just screenshotted that.
Did you know there's a very popular sandbox in existence right now?
It's a game all about skill use, and skills interact with each other, allowing your character to create their own gear and items and be generally self sufficient. If that's not interesting, you can rely on a fully functional market system that allows for manipulation (and many players enjoy playing the market for making money). While you are a newbie, you may find the help of other players very desirable, but eventually you will learn and grow to become less dependant and able to fend for yourself. The change is noticible and gives you the sense that you have taken on an immense journey - and your character is dynamically growing in power.
Its quests are real adventures, some have difficult content and you will remember quite a few for their epic feel and sense of accomplishment at the end. Probably the most lengthy and rewarding journey involves bringing your skills to maximum level, which usually takes a lot of time, money, or both for each skill. There is no limitation on your skills aside from their maximum level so you can choose what to perform whenever you want.
The game offers challenging PvE content for players both veteran and newbie, but it also has a pvp system that allows you to loot either most or all of a player's prized possessions. The PvP can only occur within a specific area, but you can bet that some very rewarding content is hidden in this zone for players who want to craft and PvE too.
Spoiler alert it's Runescape but you wouldn't judge a book by its cover, right? After all, a 'post pubescent' man like yourself would be mature enough to take a game's merits and disregard any connotations.
World of Warcraft has some of the steepest penalties in a MMO right now
j/k
Some on this site would argue MMORPGS don't have challenges. It's all about time investment
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
Wait until June for Secret World for an intelligent system with depth of skills and puzzles, but it's by no means a sandbox.
Besides that, i wouldn't bother with the genre until 2013 and before anyone says Guild Wars 2, don't bother pmsl.
Maybe GW2. But It's a big maybe.
An honest review of SW:TOR 6/10 (Danny Wojcicki)
I am kind of in a similar situation as the OP. Essentially the same age and I played in SWG from beta till NGE and then off and on after that. For now, there are pretty much no games with what you're looking for. Even the old games have made changes to draw the newer types of gamer and online gaming of any kind draws out the idiot in anyone. Immaturity will always be a part of online gaming so deal with it. The only way I got through WoW when I played was by playing with RL friends. Otherwise, suck it up and ignore whom you can if you find something to amuse you, even temporarily, while you wait for "that game" to come around again.
Look into ArchAge. It's a wait for now, but seems to have what you might be looking for. Ryzom and Istaria aren't graphic powerhouses, but the communities are decent and gameplay is complex for certain things. Both games are okay being niche games so there won't be any 'NGE' moments in either.
Lastly, I'll bite. I wouldn't compare MMO's to 'American music.' Firstly, that's a shallow comment. Mainstream music is the same pretty much worldwide. Every country has an equal amount of vapid music, that is supposedly massively enjoyed, of which to be ashamed. For every Bieber and Katy Perry there's a Kerli and... ugh, the entirety of Dubstep (thanks a lot England.)

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth. - Oscar Wilde
id add fallen earth and perpetuum to the mix
Because those games are designed so that casual players can beat them. There's no depth or interesting gameplay mechanics. They're just elaborate progress quest time wasters.
Launch day of Laurelin-RP LoTRO server and I saw a Hobbit questing about called Dildoshaggins...I did laugh.
Give a try to the trial of Mortal Online.
Might be your cup of tea.
You wont notice it in the beginning as they have intentionally made early leveling easier due to extreme top heaviness, but EQ still fits this bill the best
Requiem: Bloodymare maybe? It's gory as hell and has a much darker tone then most MMORPG's for sure.
it can punish you harshly for going to places you shouldn't be at during the night or by thinking you can handle harder monsters easily.
Isn't that bad with the F2P considering it's a grinder "at heart", either.
Guess it fits the "harder" and "for an older crowd" even though the gore can get comical with monsters body parts flying all over the place and spewing out lots of blood.
As far as the first everquest it's changed quite a bit and made zones that required 35 players working together to kill 1 monster let alone get through, into almost completely soloable zones with a lot of their content for example, heh..
With this in mind EQMac has been saved the chopping block, is now completely free to play and is (for now) accessible via PC. Might be worth a look as it's PoP-locked.
i beta tested rift. it was rather poor, with no apparent dialogue between the beta testers and the developers on whether the feedback was heard.
eve is science fantasy, like starwars. science fiction would be a deus ex MMO. it could only be in the immediate future because once you start talking about super hyper drives or metacolorians it becomes beyond the scope of present research- science.
traditional fantasy games, you might have to wait for GW2 like the rest of us. it alledgedly will have dynamic encounters so if you screw up a fight defending a town, hostile NPCs will camp it and adapt the questing. idk the depth of how it will punish stupidity though.
yeah, music has 'fallen' to beiber and the beatles but frankly one can't force any exquisite culture onto others. i prefer vivaldi myself, as well as some good grieg, but no matter to those who enjoy the crunch of wrappers.
bottom line? it is more about the top line sir. with the economy in the ruts they need a more secure source of revenue so they can't engage in as many or as risky a venture. if it takes more than 6 months to regain the money invested, many copanies wont be able to float the credit to fund the project.
You want consequences for stupid decisions? Try A Tale in the Desert. If you're sufficiently obnoxious, you can even get other players to ban you from the game. Yes, other players, not mods.
None of these have serious consequenses when you screw up.. And yes, WoW is pretty damn easy. And all these games are filled with retarded kids.
Try battleground europe....at 38 you may be one of the younger players.....www.battlegroundeurope.com
See the site, it's self explanatory, and it has a 14 free trial.
