Guild Wars 2 as a free-to-play game is just the usual Free Zone wistful thinking. Never going to happen. No reason for it to happen other than that Aihoshi wants every game to go F2P.
Everytime I read these articles all I can do is shake my head. How can anyone be that is supposed to be in touch with this genre be so out of touch. NCSoft is a company on a downward spiral. This new company was a waste of money if you ask me, never heard of any of those titles and I am pretty up on what kids are playing right now.
As for GW2, it is not designed as a f2p and NCSoft would kill the franchise if they tried changing it to one. There is a tremendous amount of competition for the f2p dollars right now and NCSoft is behind the eight ball in that arena. Just look at the ridiculous way they converted Aion.
If anyone has NCSoft stock, sell it. It is going no where.
Funny how a company that continually posts increased profits year after year equals sell in your mind... Aion is still doing well.. and GW2 will sell like hot cakes.. I'd say buy if anything. We just don't see the whole picture here in the west.. but in the east this company is a rock star.
Talk about overreacting. Just because someone puts their eggs in more than one basket doesn't mean they are about to transfer all their eggs over to the new one. Guild Wars 2 will never be F2P. I waited 1 year for GW after release to come down in price and it never did so paid nearly full price for it, then loved it so much bought all the expansions - collector's editions too. NCSoft probably made more out of me than any other mmorpg with subs. GW2 I have no doubt will find similar success.
It is possible GW1 could become F2P rather than be shut down eventually. Who knows. Wouldn't bother me once GW2 is out.

I think the issue is that most of the western market is very insular. They really dont see what is happening in the rest of the world, nor do they seem to care. They really believe that 'they' are the dominant market.... which some of us realize is not true.
In the past year, the gaming market has started to collapse. We are seeing it here in the west, but it is happening worldwide. NCSoft is very agresssively buying companies that add to its bottom line. They are buying up many of their competitors who are not in as good a position, and who have not been able to build like they have. Other examples of this are Perfect World, and Nexon, who are doing the same.
There is a gaming market consolidation going on. The companies that are in a position to gain from this are taking advantage of the situation, and are securing their position. Expect to see more large companies buying out medium companies.
Nah, I gotta say flat out no to this - no chance at all.
Look at SWTOR - 2 million copies purchased. That's a whole lot of sets of $60 dollars. As far as I know, the purchase price alone has already covered almost all the costs of development.
That's a whole lot of money for Arenanet to pass up, considering they already have the "cheapest, highest quality MMO" card in their deck, as it's no monthly subscription.
I can't see them dumping the box cost in hopes of attracting those who would have bought it, but didn't feel like actually spending money. That can't be a big portion of gamers.

Except for Arenanet all their games are in decline, even Aion. The competition is making them hurt. Sure GW2 will do well and will bring in decent revenue, the rest of their lineup is in steady decline with nothing new on the horizon. GW2 will be just a temporary influx of cash, they will do well this year, but how about next year? You sell when the stock is high because it is not going any higher.
NCSoft + Casual is not actually possible. This company is responsible for the phrase "Korean Grindfest". Their games are so grindy that people have actually died because of it. The laws of KOREA had to be changed because their games were so grindy.
If NCSoft goes casual then hell just literally froze over.
/respect, i totally agree with you. After all is full of NCSoft's games (L2, Aion)unofficial shards with better exp (and lesser players) and more money drop.
It is true. Seriously everytime someone has died recently because of video games it has been a NCSoft game. If you ever played the casual version of Aion 1.0 when it launched you know what I mean.
the last korean death i saw on the news was playing Leage of Legends in a cafe and nobody noticed the dead guy after hours of sitting motionless in front of the pc. I think LoL is not from NCsoft.

(Away from Argument) I miss exteel. V.V
I don't think all of ncsofts games are grind fest, for example guild wars.
80 levels in GW 2...it better not take me more than a month or 2 to reach that.
Ncsoft is moving to the STO Model. C-Store, In-Game items, etc. Read their earning call presentation to see where their headed and why.
