During the Guild Wars 2 press beta a week or so ago, we had the opportunity to check out all of the game's professions. In our latest preview, we check out the Elementalist, that purveyor of fire and ice. See what you think and then leave us a comment or two.
In the early levels you start with the elements of Fire and Water. Fire spells give your blasting combat explosions and super damage style spells. I found that while fighting monsters I could kill most of them before they got to me. However, in Guild Wars 2 monsters do fight in packs and there were times I had to resort to some attacks. Keep in mind that Guild Wars 2 has no dedicated healers, so you can self heal if things get rough, but be prepared to die a bit more than usual early on. Fire is a great weapon in long ranged battles and will likely play a strong part in objective battles for WvW PvP.

the elementalist will kinda be needed on all instances, its a great class, but the most fun class will be the engineer
The article mentions using a staff for long range attacks and a wand/focus for mid and short range.
I though Eles didn't get to swap their weapons to balance that they can switch types of magic? Or is this a "manual" switching where you open you your inventory?
I need more information on Earth and Water magic!...=(
I want to focus on those two elements with ranged dps and support.
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.
haha!! havent been this excited since....well-2008!
Nice article, the spells beloning to the 4 elements sounds very much like it works in GW1 .. no wonder it'll probably my 2nd most favourite profession .. like in GW1!

Makes me think of the feel of the old EQ1 mages, except minus the pets (only thing I'll miss, always loved those).
I'm actually still not sure how I feel about Elementalists (and Engineers for that matter) being unable to switch weapons like other classes. I understand they already have a lot of options due to the nature of their class mechanics, but it does seem that - at least in the case of the elementalist - certain weapon sets come with a predisposition to "range." Does this mean that during a fight, if I'm Dagger/Air to take out trash mobs in a dungeon, I won't get to switch to my Staff to attack/support from the back when the boss comes out?
I'll reserve the full critcism for when I get to play, but it is something I'm concerned about. That said, with so many elemental paths per weapon + the second half of the bar with skills you get to choose, there's bound to be a way for even a dagger/dagger ele to keep things at a distance, and the dodge mechanics should make it so if you're good enough, you can avoid the majority of the damage. I guess we'll see.

That's correct. The Elementalist, like all the other professions, has access to multiple weapon sets. However, like the Engineer, to switch between them they have to be out of combat and open their inventory. ArenaNet designed the two classes this way due to the way the profession mechanics worked (Elementalist had the four attunements and the Engineer had their tool kits (such as flamethrower, bomb kit, med kit).

Ok, thanks.
Of course, this is insanely inconvenient! Being required to go into your inventory to swap weapons? What is this, 1980? ANet would be much better off allowing the Ele access to the weapon swap mechanic and disable the swap when in combat.
^^^ That's a good suggestion, are we totally sure thats not the way it works? I hope they do that for convienience sake. I can understand not allowing the quick swap in combat. But I seen no reason you shouldnt be able to do it when your out of combat. Opening up the inventory and equipping will get annoying.
Perhaps you won't have as much reason to swap weapons as often, if the attunements in themselves provide enough flexibility?
detailed video of Elementalist skills here. youre welcome

The phoenix animation is amazing! Cannot wait to play this.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

SO much power....how can I( a warrior) compete against this? I need to see the warrior preview >.<
Btw this game seems to becoming more violent, which i like.
@saker the elementalist does sort of get pets. you can summon any 2 types of elementals to aid you.
Very nice, thank you.
How much swapping is involved for Elementalists? Weapon swapping, element swapping-- does it get overwhelming or confusing during battle?
