It only happens when you fail, so it should be a punishment. I hope it costs enough to actually be a deterrent.
I also think it should disappear. Making broken versions of all the armor doubles the work for artist for armor. That is ridiculous and wasteful, and should never be done. It would look cool, but it isn't worth the time. You could be working on totally new armor or clothing or anything else in that time. It wouldn't take as long as brand new armor, but it is still unacceptably wasteful.

Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

Seriously arguing that feature that should be implemented on GW2?
Trololol much?
if you are replying to my post mentioning Kabod, i didnt say copy Kabods design. I clearly said Kabod has that system and it works. ANET would add it with their own desing to fit GW2. Just fyi
And about the video, when i played Kabod in early beta thats not how the broken armor worked, it showed little pieces of armor, but it still visually covered. So it seems they did changes to it to show more meat (since its an adult mmo)
edit: i also said if it were to be implemented and the armor breaks almost completely, the players would show the undergarments also scratched or ragged (likely a shirt used under armor) so its not going to be a porn fest like kabod, and of course a AAA title would develop that feature more polished and much better.
Since people are wishing that the cost of armor breakage would really be punishing....I expect that I will quickly become known in the game as the local nudist. I fail....a lot. I play games to have fun, not because I'm a professional gamer that never dies. I die a few times on all boss fights, probably, until I learn what I'm doing wrong. Now if my humaness and imperfection is a reason to PUNISH me in a game....so be it....but I'm just warning everyone that I'll be streaking past you quite often. Try not to laugh and point.

I doubt they'll go this far, unless they aim for a 18+ rating as well, which I doubt it.
Anet seems to be focusing on the mainstream (and rightfully so) and an adult rating would hurt their sales. Even Tera in West, if you strip down all armor, the game is cencored back to the starter armor, instead of some form of underwear.
It only happens when you fail, so it should be a punishment. I hope it costs enough to actually be a deterrent.

You are limiting to much your options. Check a couples post up for a few ideas (obviously not all of them serious). Or you could read trough the thread for more alternatives.
As for it being a deterrent, that's just absurd. If it's normal to get almost an entire party in a raid to the point of getting naked because of deaths, that is not any more a deterrent, just some fan service for immature guys. If I wanted fan service I would go to Tera.
And even if we pretend that it's meant as a deterrent , there were many better options offered in this thread alone.
It only happens when you fail, so it should be a punishment. I hope it costs enough to actually be a deterrent.

its not worth the time because the game release is near so it makes more sense to focus on other things that may be done already. But putting that specific feature aside, if devs get used to make games with your "leave X thing out cos its not worth the time" way of thinking they (or anyone else) will make crap games. Leaving features out of a game "just because" is not the best idea unless it really doesnt fit anywhere in the game (story, dynamic content, combat, etc)
edit: back to the broken armor feature, if GW2 had perhaps another year before release then it would be enough time to implement such feature.

Sorry if i didnt write much and apeared like a troll post. The point is i havent perceived any rags or broken gear appearence other than we already saw on GW2, but with underwear. Such a small detail that it is even hard to be seen on a trailer featuring it
Actually it is. I say this because people use immersion when they are afraid to just come out and say " I hate it, cuz I just do". There are a lot of things that are immersion breaking in games and yet the people claiming immersion don't find an issue with it. "immersion" basically is just a buzzword that gets throw around, with no real understanding of it. they claim immersion when something doesn't suit their needs.
Also just because its an opinion doesn't make it valid opinion.
edit: BTW, going by your logic, you shouldn't have criticize my "opinion" about immersion, because afterall it is MY opinion.
Where did I say you can't debate or critique them? That isn't what I said at all. There is a big difference between critiquing, debating, or disagreeing with something compared to dismissing their opinion in its entirety not to mention your obvious implications towards them. I mean you essentially refer to them being ignorant or basically simpleminded simply because to you being bothered by the immersion factor is somehow not relevant.

3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Since I see a lot of commenters use the argument that it would take too much time to make a change, I'll repost these options:
-general broken texture with cracks or dirty texture (no need for a spearate texture for each armor)
-general effect like a small black cloud around/behind the player's head or shoulders, a "stinky" effect with flies, a skeletal (Grenth's) hand stuck to the player's shoulder,...
-change to the broken armor's color
-a special sign on the armor, like guild emblems, only a "death emblem"
-replace the armor looks with one very plain and generic armor (rags)
-switch to town clothes
If it's really so time consuming to make one overlaying texture, or adapt one special effect, or make one generic armor (one for each race), the developers could still offer the option to automatically switch to town clothes for the time being.
I see nothing particularly complicated about that.
Practically, I think the system is fine. If they have the time to divert resources to developing broken 'looks' / animations for your armor, I wouldn't be opposed to that. Hell, it might not be a bad idea for the art dept to focus on during the last month or so before launch.
In the grand scheme of things I don't really consider this a big issue. It would be a nice feature to have, but not really game changing.

Didn't bother reading the entire thread. Just saying that I went with 'Yay'. It's a touch of realism that I haven't seen in other games that I can appreciate. Granted I am also a roleplayer so that may have something to do with it as well. I like these little tidbits that shows they wish to step out of the box even if just slightly to make their game a bit different than the norm.
I think broken armor should look broken instead of gone.
That would be nice if it didn't mean going through the 100s of different armour skins they have and making broken versions of each individual one, thus wasting dev time that could be spent elsewhere.
Just wait you do make a good point but allow there to be a broken armor look seems more real then running around naked and would add to the fun of the game know who's gear is or isnt broken and how ell they play to. To me your idea of waste of dev time that can be used else where they could do this and it wouldn't be a waste.

The current method is fine. People need to realize that there will be more armor options in this game than in most other MMOs, plus some of the races need their own models and textures, rather than just being resized. Not only would the cost in time and money be prohibative, but it would likely cut in half the number of armors the game can handle.
One assumes one's character eats, drinks and fulfill basic biological needs, but there is no need to show this routine in a game. With the broken armor, you are assumed to have removed it once it became un-usable. They don't need an animation or armor dropping on the ground.
Presumably, if you find yourself embarrassed by exposure to the elements as armor is broken, you will take measures to keep some back up pieces and will be sure to repair frequently.

So go for an another option that takes a lot less time and work. It's not like there were no other options laid bare (if you permit me the pun) on this thread.

That sounds fun A friend of mine would run around with broken armour half the time. She is actually a good player, but in PVE she is a lot of the time reckless in a 'I dont give a shit' way.
It's much better than huge, ugly, generic icon suddenly popping in the middle of your screen, sayin "look, moron, your armor is broken!!!". Also, bunch of naked people running around is always fun.
There are two stages of armor damage... damaged and broken.
If anything should look damaged it should be "damaged" armor - broken armor is broken, unusable, it gives no benefit to the player and thus should not appear on the player.
Also, as others have said, it serves as a great indication.
Another possibility would be to do what many other games do and display a small armor set icon somewhere in the corner of the UI, which indicates green(healthy), yellow(damaged) or red(broken) status.
Personally I prefer the fact your physical armor disappears when broken, but I wouldn't mind them making damaged armor look damaged if the art department are bored and twiddling their thumbs. But I wouldn't ask for it if it meant delaying the release any longer. It's just a cosmetic thing so it could be something they tackle later.
I wouldn't mind it being something as simple as those awesome "Battle Damage" He-Man toys I had as a kid, and rather than a big yellow or red icon on my screen the armor just looks busted.
It doesn't have to be so dramatic to be implemented well.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
Since I see a lot of commenters use the argument that it would take too much time to make a change, I'll repost these options:
-general broken texture with cracks or dirty texture (no need for a spearate texture for each armor)
Not all textures will appropiately match each piece of armor, so you'd need to create quite a few of these textures actually. Could be a possible solution, but probably not worth the development time.
-general effect like a small black cloud around/behind the player's head or shoulders, a "stinky" effect with flies, a skeletal (Grenth's) hand stuck to the player's shoulder,...
I think I personally would like this less than the armor just breaking. Having an effect around your character constantly can get annoying, especially when you are just wandering around town or something.
-change to the broken armor's color
Again, not really better than just removing the armor entirely.
-a special sign on the armor, like guild emblems, only a "death emblem"
An okay solution, but it might take some development time to place these on every piece of armor along with guild emblems.
-replace the armor looks with one very plain and generic armor (rags)
A good replacement.
-switch to town clothes
Best possible solution in my opinion. Even go as far to say having an option to toggle between underwear and town clothes on armor break would be ideal as you said below. It would even be nice to have a choice between various undergarments so you could go with the rags above or the more revealing option.
If it's really so time consuming to make one overlaying texture, or adapt one special effect, or make one generic armor (one for each race), the developers could still offer the option to automatically switch to town clothes for the time being.
I see nothing particularly complicated about that.
Also a shader could work, but it would probably be difficult to create and apply a shader in such as way that you pretty much have a one size fits all shader for broken armor. Think it isn't worth the development time for such a minor feature.
Well, if Arenanet can make it to look all broken, with holes, dents and scratch, why not. It would look like you really had adventure and been in all sort of trouble.
That would take allot more work to implement. They would at least have to have 2 copies of every armor piece (helm, boots, chest piece, etc). 1 copy that looks new, and one copy that is all beat up.
I have no problem having my character naked if all my armor breaks.
You are right about amount of job it would take, but it would look good. To look all covered in mud or blood from fights, to have that real feeling.
Since I see a lot of commenters use the argument that it would take too much time to make a change, I'll repost these options:
-general broken texture with cracks or dirty texture (no need for a spearate texture for each armor)

Since this is meant as an incentive not to die (as I keep hearing) it could work quite well. I am sure quite few people would prefer the effect, to geting their characters stripped. Still as you found yourself there are better solutions below.
-change to the broken armor's color
Again, not really better than just removing the armor entirely.
It's less of an issue for some people and makes the game less traumatic, for as little development effort
-a special sign on the armor, like guild emblems, only a "death emblem"
An okay solution, but it might take some development time to place these on every piece of armor along with guild emblems.
-replace the armor looks with one very plain and generic armor (rags)
A good replacement.
Agreed that's my favorite although I do admit it would take some work to get it right. Still it could be a modification of the town clothes which could strongly decrese the amount of development hours needed to implement.
-switch to town clothes
Best possible solution in my opinion. Even go as far to say having an option to toggle between underwear and town clothes on armor break would be ideal as you said below. It would even be nice to have a choice between various undergarments so you could go with the rags above or the more revealing option.
This would be in my opinion the second best solution. Although the low amount of development needed to implement it certainly puts it right beside the one I like the most. The idea to have a toggle to choose which kind of wardrobe malfunction to use is great. More options to everyone I say.
If it's really so time consuming to make one overlaying texture, or adapt one special effect, or make one generic armor (one for each race), the developers could still offer the option to automatically switch to town clothes for the time being.

I like a lot some of the ideas I am seeing here.
I am still not sure which option I would use if there would be a toggle available between underware and town cloths. Probably I would be switiching a bit back and forth based on my mood.
