My largest concern is that SOE is involved with this. They blight and or destroy just about everything they touch. Planetside 2 looks like a great deal of fun, from what I've seen. Lets hope that having SOE involved doesn't end up ruining it.
We have a modern physics engine which helps us with thousands of times more collision checks per frame, a fully-realized ballistics system, multiple validation systems, and several “secret sauce” solutions I’m sure we’ll be hinting at in the near future.
My biggest worry is that they will go with the entire F2P crap.
This is also my worry, free games = hacked to death.
Not neccesarily. Smedley wouldn´t have gone for the model unless he thought it would generate more money so it is not any economical reason for it.
My worry instead is that they will sell too good stuff that makes it close to impossible to be good unless you buy stuff every month and the whole game turns P2win.
Where did this creative director say he invented this leader construction or where did he say PS has the biggest maps? Indeed, he did not. And would it matter who had it first? Do they need the biggest map? Or would you rather have some fun gameplay instead of flying 2 hours to reach your target. Fact is that the maps are big and player lead squads are cool, and they should "brag" about it. It's obvious you are quite the ww2 online fan though.
Can't wait for some FPSMMORPG meltface.. Vanu baby.. ALL DAY!
Hopefully this project will succeed. There the only ones doing it like this on this scale..
Good luck dudes..
Unlike SWTOR, Planetside 2 will define the genre IF SOE are successful in developing it properly. Unfortunately, I still to this day have a massive pile of "doubt" hanging over SOE's head. They've ruined so much, and failed in so many aspects when it comes to the gaming market.
I just can't seem to shake the feeling that they're warping Planetside's image to fit something it shouldn't (Call of Duty style gameplay, for instance).
I sincerely hope I am wrong.
That's the feeling I'm getting too. I hope that don't make it feel like Planetside COD and draw ideas from COD class system, if they add rewards pop system for COD for killing 5 people with your little toe I'll go hunt down Smed!
They already planned to region lock the game to both NA and Europe but a ton of people complained so that may change so guilds can form cross continent.
They listened to the feedback and have said that Players will be able to play on whatever Server they choose.
I hope this game is very successful and will stomp on the medicore co-op's that are being passed of as MMO's lately, MMO's should be epic open worlds, not shriveled instanced based affairs.
Btw, he is wrong when he claims that you would be able to do "everything" without a class system. Planetside 1 in theory had that, but because your suit was limited, it was also limited what you could do, based on that.
If you wanted to be a stealther, the room in your suit was so limited, that you could carry little else than a hacking tool, a gun and ammo (if you planned to stay long in the field), or maybe alternatively some mines, making your staying power much shorter. Big weapons was out of the question.
In an agile suit, you often had to choose as well. If you wanted to be an engineer, then you would have to spend that room on mines/turrets for any kind of efficiency.
If you wanted to be Anti-vehicle, the weapon itself was huge, and ammo boxes were so big, that for any kind of staying power, that would take up your entire inventory, save for one big weapon with a limited amount of ammo.
The big suit could have alot of stuff, but you usually had to specialize here too, although you could be quite strong in at least two areas. But the suit was slow, often making you weaker against people in agile, even when it had more armor.
Etc. etc.
I cannot see, that class system necessarily makes for more or better specialization. Instead it takes away from the freedom of putting together your own kit, which gave you a sense of ownership of your character. And it was fun to continually optimize your kits, as you saw weaknesses in them.

It was in a seperate interview printed in the April 2012 issue of PC Gamer.
By the way, WWIIOL has always had realistic physics and equipment. In WWIIOL, tanks don't have "hit" points or fatuigue ratings. They have realistic armor (fule and ammo loadouts) and placement of crew, ammo, engine, fule, etc. Shoot a tank and hit the ammo, it blows up. Hit a tanks track, it does donuts.

yea, wwiiol is what it is, it's also an old engine with graphics many don't care for. Also because of such a large map, finding a fight is like a needle in a hay stack. Yea, you can auto to a fight, but then you may get lucky or may not. Don't take me wrong, it's a good game for its time, but it is in NO WAY a planetside game. wwiiol has attempted real world conversions, planetside is more of a fps where again wwiiol is not , its more of a mmo simulator. Sorry but nothing is easy to get into that game. It's a unique genre that doesn't compare.
"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"
Planetside was by far the most fun, involved and continuously engaging game I've ever played by far. I stopped playing once I was seduced by the easy, shiny colourful WOW beta and I can safely say things have gone downhill since then.
I should be looking forward to PS2 above everything else, but I've been too frequently disappointed over the years by nearly every game I've been looking forward to that I'm going to pretend this game doesn't exist until I'm actually shooting things on the screen in front of me. I think this attitude to games coming with hefty promises is healthier for the heart these days.
SOE is trying to blow this thing out of the water with them trying to partner up with prosiebensat.1 folks. Honestly I would not touch anything soe has to put out now. Yea lets sale off half our subs to another crapy company who has a worse reputation than us.
Why classes in fucks name. The cool thing about Planetside was you could create your own class! Do I take a heavy weapon and grenadelauncher or heavy with medium or medium with Sniper rifle, all depending on the situation and what mood I was in. Hell, I even went Heavy weapon, heavy weapon at one time, switchign was faster then reloading.
I knew I shouldn't be reading up on this game because I KNOW SOE are gonna fuck it up like usual.
It went much further then this because you could make up your own inventory. You could even carry a third or fourth weapon if you wanted (no fast switch). Do I take two or five health kits etc etc. Man, this is really sad news.
The hitscan method also precludes ballistics, as it cannot simulate any kind of movement other than a straight line, such as a parabolic arc or atmospheric resistance (including wind direction).[dubious – discuss]
With advances in processing and internet bandwidth, it has become more practical to simulate the ballistic nature of real-world firearms in real-time games by using a more realistic "projectile" model, spawning bullets as actual game objects with mass and velocity and continuously simulating them until they reach their target.
They said ballistic simulation, and they mean it. Not Hitscan.
It's going to be class based? Oh well, another one bites the dust. Scratch PS2 off the list.
Because everyone should have jetpacks, cloaks, heavy armor, sniper rifle, anti-tank rifle, machine gun, shotgun, anti-personel grenades, anti-tank grenades, shield pack, portable missile system, mortar and a pocket casino-mall.
And to add, have you read the class bases? You could go stuff like INF's with shotguns, and the customizations are a ton, the point made is that you can't have EVERYTHING SIMUTANEOUSLY, but you can have EVERYTHING.

Did you play Planetside 1?
When you have done either (hint: look for an earlier post of mine regarding the kitting system of PS1), come back.

I admire WWIIOL Cornered Rat, for what they've done, but haven't played it in 5 years.
You see, real people control the action in WWIIOL. Real people, real Chain of Command, real egos, real politics. Thats the down side.
Its a double edged sword.

My guess is that they went a little cookie-cutter to attract traditional FPS players who are looking for something new.
I do like the thought of a personalized loadout kit though.
