We all know what we want in a game, but we rarely know what we need in a game. "Make it easier" we say, and when they do "there's no challenge" is our answer. "Make it harder" we say, and when they do "too much grinding" is our answer. "We want open pvp" and when we get it "too many griefers and gankers" we yell.
Because a lot of us (including myself) have come to spend the majority of our free time playing an mmo, we've come to want an mmo to deliver all the types of entertainment we crave. The game displaces TV, hobbies, sports, and even simple social interaction. It's no wonder we believe we become dissatisfied with mmos. What we really become dissatisfied with is the fact that so much of our lives is only visible from within the mmo.
For example, I'm a master tailor in game X and everyone runs to me to buy my wares. I'm rich and I make the best items available. I shut off the game and look around me...where is my talent and my riches? So, crafting in game becomes a monotonous repetition of gathering/buying resources, and clicking a mouse; more money in my game bank and less to buy. Yawn.
Compare with - I enjoy knitting and crocheting. Also monotonously repetitive and boring if you consider the fact that you're doing the same stitches over and over again. However, when I put my yarn and needles down, I can wrap myself in the blanket I just finished, or show off the sweater I made or I have a baby outfit for a pregnant friend. I have pillows and blankets and clothing decorating my home and a couple of unfinished projects yet to go. Friends even ask me to make stuff for them and their kids. I'm not rich, but I can buy stuff with that money that I can enjoy having every day just by turning my head and looking at it.
Think of all the stuff you can do with your in-game friends; and then think of all the stuff you can do with your real life friends in the same time frame. Which experience is richer? More enjoyable?
What we have to do is to put gaming back in its place and stop allowing it to dis-place the rest of our lives. Prove it to yourself. Start a project today - anything from doing a jigsaw puzzle to building a piece of furniture or just reading a book - whatever you remember enjoying doing before mmos and preferably something you can't do while playing an mmo. Make sure you keep that project within sight of your computer. Then see which one you're more drawn toward. Of course, at 3:30 in the morning, you may not want to turn on your circular saw or even your sewing machine, but don't be surprised that instead of logging into your mmo, you debate going to bed to give yourself more time to work on your project the next day.
Everything is relative, of course, but the more you have enticing you in real life, the less "satisfaction" you'll come to expect from your games - and that's usually a good thing.
Most games are fun for the screenshots, the first 10 minutes up to the point where you work out how to play, then they just repeat everything youve done before, and thats where its starts getting boring, then its just boring full stop.
I managed to play on The Legend of Mir for about 2 years, but it was on and off, cos as I said, it gets boring, but then I play it when Im bored.Wow is just the same, so are guild wars and other stuff.
I am hoping for great things from DDO. I have had some very fun times with previous MMO games I have been involved with, but nothing that kept me from checking out the next one in line.
With D&D being the father of MMO games, I would imagine they can show the rest a thing or two. Only a short time more to wait and we can find out.
Originally posted by rubydragon5 I actualy already have The Chronicle Preordered, But I really want something I can" Play Now." I am very much looing foward to the Beta though. ALso about EnB having absolutely nothing to do with what I want. You are 100 percent right. I just miss ENB very badly because it was my first mmorpg and I was in a awesome guild and I still am having withdrawal issues since EA killed the game. I shouldnt even of mentioned it, and DAOC was ok but it got boring very fast and not enough immersion and it just wasnt for me.
Yea i played EnB for a year and miss it a lot nothing seems as fun as EnB was. Tried Eve, VO, Fom, Runescape, Hostile Space, Darkspace, and a bunch more but nothing seems to amount up to EnB. Hoping a good game comes along soon or i will just have to wait for this other one i am waiting for.

When is Beta going to begin? If it's supposed to come out at the end of this year you're not giving yourselves much time for a beta phase.
