Realm of the Mad God: 'You Can't Be Afraid to Change Your Game' - Spry Fox CEO

David Edery, CEO of Spry Fox Games, developer of Realm of the Mad God, spoke about the fear that sometimes casues companies to be afraid to make changes and take risks with their games.

Edery spoke at GDC about the process behind the game, and some of the tweaks and changesthat fixed the game, even while making some of the vocal crowd angry.

"Everyone's afraid of being the next Star Wars Galaxies," he said, talking about change and perhaps an overemphasis on trying to cater to everyone.

Tweaks to Realm of the Mad God came down hard, with nerfs to range and slowed attacks because a lot of players weren't playing it as intended. Since the game features permadeath, players were playing it as safely as they could, in other words.

Edery summed up the experience this way, "As a company, I feel like we've gotten really good at saying 'screw it, let's change it and see what happens.' That's kind of the takeaway -- remember to tell yourself, it's okay if it doesn't work, we'll just change it back".

x2 : mmorpgs! ROTMG does some good things in spite of the basic graphics. A few game sessions here and there = a satisfactory game.

Realm of the Mad God is a great game, and I think this is a healthy attitude as long as they listen to their base and weigh their options without preconcieved notions.  The 'big changes' to this game are nothing like we saw in SWG.

ROTMG is a great game and although I am not a huge fan of permadeath, it works out because the game is short and sweet. I'm also pretty sure the graphics are intentionally simple, and I like 8 bit stuff so I like the graphics :)

Sometimes simple and polished is better then complex and rough.

I'd take a polished 2.5D game over unpolished 3D game anyday.

I don't know how long this game came out after Minecraft but it looks like they are playing on the success of that.

Graphics pull users in to the game, but its content that keeps them.  Alot of games with terrible graphics have very decent content, and its just a matter of getting the users to play the game long enough to see past the graphics.

"Playing on the success of Minecraft"

Interesting thought but it was created in January 2010 for the TIGSource Assemblee competition, in which it received 3rd place: http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=10310.0

Although the original creators intended on dropping it after the one month of production, it showed some promising popularity after the competition which had quickly increased over the last couple years. So it's more like it played on the success of itself...
