Mounts: Being Creative vs Recycling

I have a huge problem in mmorpgs. I feel like mounts are so poorly designed and everytime i see a flying dragon i just think...sure its cool but why not be more creative.

We live in a world that is not earth. I live in a "fantasy world" with no restrictions.

Why are we forced to always ride dragons and gryphons and crossbreeds of these things?

Can we not be more creative?

Let us brainstorm and share with the community those mounts we have always wanted to ride in our worlds!

Just leave a what and why please!

As silly and uninspiring as my suggestion is. I have longed to have a cow mount carry me into battle with my axe swinging wildly!

Maybe in my "fantasy land" there are no horses...no dragons...this is my land. It is not your land. That is my 2 cents. I would literally pay 50$ cash shop in a game i enjoyed for my cow mount. It may not be important to you. To me it is something I have longed for.

I want to ride on the shoulders of whatever "small race" exists in the game.

haha nice screenie! thats a bull though i want utters hehe :P

I know my suggestion is not the most creative it's just something I have wanted a long time. I feel like to many NA gaming companies are playing it safe while more korean games have mounts with no mythical background, just really cool art designs.

It would be nice to have a silly mount in every game. I really liked Rifts mounts. The two headed turtle was great if not overused due to there being a lack of selection.

Why doesn't a higher end mmo have say 50 mounts every 10 lvls. Give us the freedom to be "different" You ride your dragon into battle. I will gladly meet you head on with my cow! BRING IT!

    I support this. :D

There should definately be more multi-use mounts in games. Heck or as you say "piggy backing". Why not carry your lover into the thick of battle or have your super strong spritely friend carry your lard ass upon his shoulders.

Two of the best potential fantasy setting mounts can be seen in this video, at about 1:30 and 2:50.

I always thought Atlantica had the coolest mounts. There were standard mounts, flying suits of armor, golems, "alien tech" mounts and stuff like that.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

It was done long before forsaken world. Would be nice if it was mroe common. I understand this is all fluff material but that is what keeps some of us around. The little things. I know i played rappelz a week longer then i would have because they gave me some in game cow costume...no i do not have a cow obsession...i just want the cow mount lol :D

Its good to see innovation when it comes to mounts. I am tiring of the sale old stuff. F2P mmorpgs really excell in this area and maybe they work harder at these skins because they charge for a lot of these mounts. I was a little dissapointed in Teras (my fav game right now) Pegasus flight paths. Though beautiful and fitting to the games design.

Why not let US PICK what we want ot fly on at a travel point?! Give us an option! That to me would be innovation.

I agree.  Mounts are poor game design.  Guild Wars' map travel makes them obsolete.  Wait, you say that wasn't your point?

Actually, I can't think of a single good game that does have mounts.

  • HeroEvermoreHeroEvermore Member Posts: 672

i personally have no problem with games that just "warp" us from A to B. it in fact makes complete sense in a world full of magic to be able to be whisked away to other lands. I think flightpaths are overrated but if we have to use them give us choice!

EQOA ported us from A to B with magic back in the day. I loved it :D Who wants to spend 10+ minutes tavelling in a game unless they are exploring. I know i don't. I will gladly travel across the lands by foot if im exporing as well. I do not even see a need for mounts. I think having the feel of "OMG it takes 2 hours to cross the entire game (ala eqoa) was one of my favorite things about the game. Sad they are shutting it down. WTB PC port hehe (off topic).

Mount and Blade immediately comes to mind.

You know, that GW2 worship is getting ridiculous. So if GW2 is not having a particular feature, that feature is bad and the games that have it are also bad? What are you going to say if two expansions down the line GW2 implements mounts? Wait, I know. GW2 implementation is the only true way to have mounts in a game, right?

    Ultima Online?

    Mount&Blade?

    Dark Age of Camelot?

    Darkfall?

Dont worry the gw2 worship will end when they actually play the game. Ive been in beta and its so overrated. It is not the next WoW. Same old story. It's a good game and i certainly will buy it. To me Tera is WAY better. GW2 feels like a cluster of good ideas tossed together in a heap of wtf lol.

Hey were talking about mounts here though :D

    Please stay on topic!

What mount have you wished you could have and never been so fortunate to be able?!

Id like to ride Erza Nightwalker into battle....what...I would...

My only problem with mounts is that in most games they have no functionality besides being a out of combat speed buff.

A few games allow you to use them as a portable storage or in combat like in Mortal Online, both of which I think are great paths forward to making them actually useful.

  • QuizzicalQuizzical Member LegendaryPosts: 25,507

I'm not trying to argue that mounts are intrinsically bad.  I'm just saying that, of the games I've liked, none of them had mounts.  Well, unless you count things like Yoshi from Super Mario World.  Sometimes it's because the game makes travel slow for a variety of reasons (e.g., Uncharted Waters Online, A Tale in the Desert).  Sometimes it's because the entire notion of mounts wouldn't make a bit of sense (e.g., Tecmo Super Bowl, Europa Universalis II).  Champions Online does have travel powers, which is probably the closest to mounts that I've seen in any game that I've liked, but those aren't really mounts.

I haven't played any of the games that people cite as examples of good games with mounts.

  • HeroEvermoreHeroEvermore Member Posts: 672

i kind of like the idea of no mounts better then mounts as well. it is just a speed buff for outside travel. I think if games had a stable then people would use it more appropriatly. i know some games have this implemented.

Single player concepts need to stay in single player RPG's for a reason. I hope the genre completely burns before this crap ever gets accepted because devs feel like being lazy.

@OP Rifts next mount called Nebula. Zoom your camera all the way in and you see the entire GALAXY!

Very sexy mount. Trion is by far one of my favorite companys. Looking forward to end of nations.

I say that mounts are mounts, and will always have the same mechanics, regardless if it's a horse, motorcyle or giant ant (respectively)... but any major innovation in the future is going to be in how they are controlled. Without a home-setup like the pics above, you won't ever see that kind of experience, but with ergonomic controls you can have something 'similar' in the palm of your hand.

Imagine the control of Mount and Blade combat, but for the horse itself. Having to turn and dip with the horse while using the mouse, in order to keep your weight centered. Or perhaps to lean into turns in a vehicle. Then again, the further you move from precise controls, the more it overall sucks. So maybe this is all just wishful thinking... but I would like to whip a horse with my six-axis.

Mounts are poor game design? Are you kidding me?

Maybe as nothing but a travel buff. You could have multi person mounts, vehicles and creatures, use them as mobile storage, combat mounts, flying combat mounts, customize them with armor... have a creature tamer who raises them from babies. Mounts with special abilities, mounts that are also your pet.

A good mount system does nothing but add to the game.
