What happened to the Freelancer MMO?

illorionillorion Member Posts: 467

I remember that jumpgate was supposed to kinda be like that but..... that vanished or something.

I was hoping SWTOR was gonna have some meaningful space element to it... but alas.

Does anyone know of a game that maybe i have overlooked that is in development. or sometihng?

Ideally it would have all the depth of eve but the combat of Freelancer/Privateer/X series..... and having to actually dock at stations.

you may be thinking of black prophecy.

you are not getting the depth of EVE out of any space sim that has been released.

Vendetta Online is supposedly a lot like Freelancer.  I cut my teeth on Lucasart's X-Wing, and the original Escape Velocity (not Nova, mind you).  Vendetta far exceeds either of those titles with its platform-agnostic, robust physics twitch style combat:

Well if you have the game Freelancer (and I do and love it) you can mod it with all kinds of fun crazy stuff.

Im pretty sure there are also communities who have taken the game and put in a multiplayer, mmo, type mod on it.  So players fly and do missions together.  Basically turning it into an mmo.

Ive never messed with the online mods.  I just mod the single player game and have fun flying around Tie Fighters and stuff.  But as far as I know it can be done.

Sorry to double dip, and sorry if my previous post came off sounding rabid.  I just really am enthusiastic about this game.  Here's a 1:47 clip of combat from my perspective (no cuts):

The large ship I am zooming against is a Trident Type-M: a player-constructable cap ship.  The names on the right hand side of the screen are nearby players, who are ranked by distance and who has recently damaged me.  The gold chat in the top left belongs to members of my group, whose names are on the left side of the screen.  To fly, I am switching between a logitech gamepad and mouse.

Once upon a time EA had Wing Commander Online and Privateer Online as working titles.   Both of those were dropped years ago... either around the same time as UO2 or UxO production being shut down.

I'm not sure I ever remember a mention of Freelancer being made into an online version.   Microsoft would still own the IP as far as I know... so it would be pretty public if it had ever been announced.   Then again Microsoft is in the habit of starting production on an MMO and then simply shutting it down.

Yup. From what I remember, most of the team ended up working on Jump to Lightspeed for SWG.

They may bave been working on Harry Potter Online at that point too. I know a bunch of stuff got canceled all at once.

Unfortunately Black Prophecy is the only MMO currently and that one is total crap.

I've played Freelancer as an online-shooter for years on private servers and I'm still hoping for a developer to pick this up and make into an MMO.

Better yet, I hope someone grabs X and turn it into an MMO, as the economy is a musthave for a MMO.

Inifinity is awesome in regards to the procedural technique used, but as there's only a single guy developing the engine basically, it'll never see a release imho. The guy developing the engine will probably license the engine to gamestudios at some point.

Jumpgate Evolution was dumped as far as I know, so we're currently left without any action-combat space-MMO besides Black Prophecy, which unfortunately doesn't get developed anymore as Reakktor went bankrupt and Gamigo is just milking money of what's left instead of trying to develop it any further.

It's a sad state when it comes to space-shooter MMOs really.

Um, dude did you not read the first few posts in this thread?  Vendetta Online is an ongoing first person space action-combat MMO, and has been for the past 10 years.

Yeah, I'll allways try to forget about Vendetta as it was a rather disappointing experience. It's lacking in every way, beginning from the graphics, the interface, no real progression, etc etc...

I won't pay a penny for that, sorry.

I ended up with EvE Online back then and stayed with it for six years, as it was the way better product, even if it doesn't have action-combat, way more complex, better UI, etc etc...

Well, it isn't nice to mislead people by saying there are no action-combat space MMOs being developed because of one's preference in game titles.

I'd also like to point out that a lot has changed in VO over the last six years... it does not get marketed as much as Eve does, but it has a very active developer and player community.
