What would revitalize an old MMORPG for you?

It's 4am, but I'm bored and decided to make a post, so forgive me if my grammar and spelling is somewhat off.

I'm sure most of you have a game that you've played that was pretty fun, but you've lost interest in it because you felt like you'd always be behind. For me, it has become Final Fantasy 11. I hit level 75 on this game many months ago, and put my character into a temporary retirement because of work. After my 6 month break, I returned to the game, and it's changed so much, that I am unable to even enjoy it anymore. I see people running around near the end-game who have no right being there (gimped equipment, blatant retards, still don't know their roles in a party, etc, etc) and it just seems like the game isn't even the same one I was playing a few months back. Also, people who I played with and used to have fun with have become overly serious about being "1337", and would rather spend 1 month farming for 1 item than they would actually enjoying the game.

So this had me thinking, what would make this fun again, what would bring back the spark that drew me to this game in the first place? I thought about it for a little while, and the only thing I thought of that would make the game fun for me again was a fresh start, like a new server full of level 1's. No more economy controlled by a few linkshells, no more dominance of prices by gilsellers and a handful of high level crafters. Just a fresh start. Even though I know it will never happen, I was just wondering how many of you here have ever thought that starting an MMO from scratch would be fun.

I guess I'm not really going anywhere with this, so I'll just ask, what would breathe new life into a game you've played for a long period of time?

Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

Depends on the game, you should have an option for all those SWG players out there, "Restore it to a former version of the game" aka before the CU. For DAoC it would be the new servers.

Upgraded graphics and combat system would help for starters. Most of the MMOs i loved in years past have really outdated graphics and gameplay. Granted, graphics don't "make" the game...but it sure does help with the immersion factor.

The only old game that I'd seriously consider going back to is UO. And all they'd have to do is put in a fully 3D interface like EQ2 or WOW or GuildWars currently has.

Keep the entire game design and take out trammel.

I would go to UO3D in a nanosecond. I truely wish the graphics were up to today's standards. That's the only reason people don't play UO. Because the current graphics just aren't worth paying $12.95 a month for.

I had the most fun in EVE Online when I just started out and had no clue about it and MMORPGs.
It was just so fun to explore the huge world of it and doing new stuff again and again. Hell, I couldn't even speak English properly when I bought EVE. ::::02::

Oh well, I played it for about 2 years but I got bored of it cause I didn't really know what to do anymore.
Hmm, to make EVE interesting for me again somebody would have to make me lose my memory.::::12::

And since this will never happen I don't think Im going to give it another try. ::::16::

I had the most fun in Lineage 2 closed and open beta because there were no cheaters. And plus my friends and I didn't care what lvl we were cause everyone was low lvl and no one cared about lvling just having fun. Plus, it was much more hardcore back then compared to now. Now, there is party bonuses+catacombs and necroplis that can get easy money and 4x xp+manor system with easy money+new player buffs and free soulshots and spiritshots+pvp arenas where you cant lose xp. Just not the same.

Also, don't hate me but runescape. Back when runescape only had one server and everyone was more than 13 years old. Pvping anywhere. Good ol' times when the community was actually mature and no 5 year olds knew about the game.

Eve is a superb game in the beginning if there isn't anyone around to help you, you really can get lost in it. Then people tell you to wait 2 weeks to train up your learning skills, mine to afford more skillpacks etc. when what they should really be doing is exploring deep space while their clone is still affordable.

I think Eve would have a lot less issues if all modules had some form of penalty. It seems like madness to me to have certain items like heat sinks (increase rate of fire and damage), warp core stabilisers, sensor boosters have no penalty, it just encourages people to stick as many as they can fit to create gank setups.

I'm glad they removed the empire highways, they were another of the additions that I never agreed with. It made 99% of the systems in eve empty and caused massive lag and gameplay problems.

Oh, and agents should have a limted amount of cash to dish out, I'd like to see it a lot less predictable. And make NPC's have random class & faction based loadouts.

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

I plyed Asheron's Call for 4 or 5 years, way back when, before the time of DAoC. What really killed the magic of the game for me was the buff bots, macros and decals. Of course, macros were eventually taken care of, but buff bots and decals? They ran rampant through the community. It took no skill to play the game. A level one could get to 20 in a matter of minutes. I remember the game when 50 was a high level, and there was a sense of exploration, and the lugian citidal was a grand hunting place. There will always be spoilers on websites, but at least you had a choice before the decal days. A completely no 3rd party apps server would truly bring this game back for me.

  • Playing FFXI, what would bring me back is banning all gil farmers, better GMs, and no KS's.  I would definately come back.
