Combat and Parties: Community Builders?

Hey there,

I just wanted to gather a few people's opinions on the combat, play mechanics, and current state of cooperation necessary to get through the game.

I'm not a huge fan of 'solo to endgame' style of play, and forced grouping, though tedious at times, has done right by me. Given a few things to do that are meaningful in the meantime (fiddling with my garden, moghouse, fishing, synthing, and just exploring, that sort of thing), I can organize a group myself.

What are your opinions on the necessity of close-knit groups? Can I just be a lone ranger and pay a sub for a single-player game, or do I need to interact and work with people to achieve goals?

    You can.

But FFXIV rewards you heavily for being in a group when leveling, at endgame, when getting AF, when doing anything.  There are many things you can do solo, but there are things you can only do with a group and you never have to solo if you don't want pretty much.

I'm glad that group play is rewarded more than solo!

How are the parties themselves? Is it pretty zerg-like where everyone just bum-rushes opponents, or do you need to think as a team when you fight? How about when the numbers get up to alliance levels, if you have that many fighting do things tend to get dumbed down?

(I know everyone says this, but I played FFXI for 6 years or so, left at the start of WoG, so I have that mindset with roles and party balance, working with weaponskills)

Pretty much zerg in terms of exp.

No alliances yet, probably not until 2.0

They are definitely trying to regain that FFXI feel though every patch is an improvement in that direction.  Jobs in the latest patch definitely remove a ton of the zerg feeling, but while people could use them to level it isn't necessary.  Jobs are not leveled they are merely equipped to classes and their abilities quested.  EXP earned on jobs goes tot he class, and your job is the same as it's corresponding class.

I also played and loved FFXI and left before the newer expansions.  Right now is it that?  No.  Is FFXI?  No.  I hope FFXIV will get there eventually, have more faith in it turning things around and getting things right with 2.0, than I do a 10 year old game on its last legs.
