Dungeons & Dragons Online: Alpha Begins

Turbine Entertainment has announced that hot on the heels of their beta invites flying out the door, the D&D Online alpha is now underway!

Turbine is pleased to announce that the public Alpha for Dungeons & Dragons Online®: Stormreach has officially started! This is the first phase of the public Alpha and we are very excited to share our work with our fans. Following our successful showing of the game at E3 and the incredible response we received from players, we have made quite a few significant improvements and additions to the game. We look forward to hearing the feedback from our Alpha players and incorporating it to make Dungeons & Dragons Online®: Stormreach even better.

If you haven't signed up for the Alpha yet, there is still time! Be sure to register for our message boards as that will be a factor in selecting people for the Alpha and Beta. Click here to sign up for the DDO.COM message boards. You can sign up for the Alpha by clicking here.

Over the coming weeks and months we'll be letting in more players so there will be many more chances to get in and play. Keep an eye out on DDO.COM for future Alpha and Beta announcements!

Will Turbine actually make the 2005 release? I'm skeptical. Not that it really matters I suppose, I'd rather not see another incomplete game launched (like AC2 was). Also I wonder if AC2 or AC1 players actually got in the alpha? Perhaps I should have stayed subscribed another month ::::29::

hmm gonna sign up, i wonder how the game is and if it's good enough for the fans ::::19::

Edit: hmm just read some stuff about it, seems like heavy instancing, hardly pvp and no crafting O_o
ahh well, maybe tha game is that good that you won't miss the other stuff :p

I would think that they aren't allowed to say they are even in the Alpha.  That's usually how the non-disclosure agreement works.

The game is listed as November release.  Anybody think that will be met?

Someone has to explain why a game like this with a dynamite graphics engine is not offering any PvP AT ALL given the amount of people wanting that in any MMOG??

alphas usually are like "Here's a button, you can press it...the end." so quite early to say yes or no

and yes...starting alpha now and releasing on november could be considered as guinness record of fastest mmorpg development ever

for those not familiar with the pen and paper DnD concept, a review

d20 rule system used in DnD.

    DnD faq .

"the majority of the content in DDO focuses on party-based" quest "adventures. D&D has always been about playing with a group of friends, and this will be reflected by DDO."

"The character races planned for launch are humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, and warforged. The available core classes will be barbarian, bard, cleric, fighter, paladin, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, and wizard." Limited to level 20. "More races and classes are planned for future updates."

Combat will be similar to Sigil's SoH... not a twitch game. No pking nor crafting on release. Spell components like AC. (this is a turbine operation [ the Asheron Call guys.]) Be sure to become familiar with the wizards site rule books, as pnp type games were all about rules & DM rulings. Pnp rp gamers were true 'nerds' back in the 80s and 90s. Hopefully this update to that genre will bring it into the 21st century of dynamic mmorpg.

The problem with doing PvP in D&D is that the classes are nowhere near balanced for an online PvP game. A level 20 Wizard would PWN everyone in nothing. I would love to see PvP in DDO, but realize that there is no way to do an open PvP in this game without making it a shell of what D&D actually is.

    "Disintegrate !"

** blows away ash of high level fighter, including non-legendary equipment **

And just for good measure :

    "Meteor Storm!"

** watch bodies being tossed into the air like toys **

    still someone coming ?

    "Prismatic Wall !"

** chuckle while watching them die on 9 walls of defenses **

IMHO it was a good decision to NOT make a DnD a PvP game. I see all the problems that Jedi as an "alpha class" cause in SWG (and they are only about 50 % better than a normal player and it needs minimum 6 months to become one in contrast to 2 weeks to master one of the 40 normal professions). Better to have alpha classes like wizards be an accepted part without having to worry about balancing and making them unrealistically weak compared to the PnP version.

    Have fun
