Guild Wars being highest rated MMORPG..

ArawniteArawnite Member Posts: 163

is about the saddest thing I've seen in gaming in a long time.

It's shallow, pointless, boring, very repetetive.  They seem to have spent way too much time making cool looking avatars and a variety of dance moves and not near enough time creating a decent reason to keep playing.

*pre-emptive reply to flamers: YES I have played the lvling side of the game, to lvl 20 with 2 characters. YES I have participated in the endgame pvp in an active guild. NO I'm not crying. NO I'm not hoping they will change the game to suit my likes/dislikes. NO i'm not a WoW fanboy, I quit that horrible game 4 months ago.

YES I am trying to convince any would-be buyers of this game to stay away! Boring piece of crap!

I think you'd convince would-be buyers better if you actually listed reasons for your dissatisfaction rather than merely spouting unsubstantiated criticism. Until you do that, you'll appear more of a troll than a concerned poster.

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

so... which game should be the highest rated mmorpg ?

  • ArawniteArawnite Member Posts: 163

I stated my opinion, which is that GW is shallow, pointless, boring, repetetive. I don't need to prove anything to anyone...it's just an opinion, just like your reply.

Don't like my opinion? That's ok, you don't have to.

no, you don't need to prove anything, but telling us specifically why you don't like it would be more helpful. Lots of people come to the GW forum and post their opinion, and most of them at least give one or two factors to back up their criticism.

c'mon, if GW is so bad, give us at least a couple of reasons why...

Yes he definitly did give his reasons in his first post but now that they are in a list maybe you can see them better. I will give another reason for not playing this game, too many kids got it becuase they don't have to pay a monthly fee.  Yes I could be considered a little kid if your consider 15 a little kid but I have a washing dishes to pay for SWG and soon LoTRO so I am not a brat with my moms credit card number.

    Thanks

They are still unsubstantiated. How is GW shallow? How is GW pointless? How is GW boring? How is GW repetitive? It's like saying 'GW is bad', unless you expand on it, it comes across as trolling. Simply saying something is boring doesn't help potential players, because they will likely have different ideas of what is boring and what isn't. If you were to say 'GW is boring because PvP is dominated by spirit spam builds' then that would point players towards possible imbalances in skills as a negative.

A fair point from DoctorSoup, which illustrates what I was getting at - name specifics and people will be able to get a sense of why you dislike it. There are a number of kids playing GW, and the community does seem to be pretty poor on the US servers. But the instancing helps in that regard, as you don't have to play with them and only occasionally against them.

It's a good thing its free too... I think that very few people would play the game if they had to pay for it.  It's really not very good.  It only gets a high rating because its free and its played by people who have never played an MMORPG before.  Guild Wars is not really a true MMO; most of the time is spent in your own private copy of the world.  The only places in the game that you share with all other players are the towns, this is not an MMORPG but an ORPG, its not massively multiplayer.  It becomes very boring after a while, and the only fun or interesting part of the game becomes its PvP.  I've known some people to play for countless hours trying to earn themselves fame and eventually, rank.  But waht do you get for having high rank?  An emote.  That is all, that and "....getting into better groups..." Why?  So you can get more fame?

Also, this game supposedly rewards player skill not time spent playing..... No, it doesn't, not really at all.  The "best" player in the world would not be able to beat a team of eight noobs.  The "best" player would be killed almost instantly (This is in PvP, when the noobs are lvl 20 also).  Could the "best" player beat a noob 1 on 1 if the noob had superior skils?  Probably not.  Not that you could determine who is the "best" player anyway.  The game is based more upon teamwork than player skill, it is in PvP in any case.  Unless they are talking about PvE -in which case, almost no player skill is involved- player skill is not rewarded.

Yes, everyone that plays GW has never played a MMORPG before ::::12::

It gets a high rating because it is easily accessable, has good graphics, PvE is pretty good for PvE, it has better PvP than most MMO's, you don't have to keep playing to remain competitive and is fun. Of course you can disagree and argue, but to suggest that everyone rated it highly purely because it's free to play is wrong.

Porbably ULTIMA ONLINE. I never saw a game so well thought like ULTIMA ONLINE. But well its an old game. They stoped to dev ULTIMA X. I wish to have a recent game, with recent features like ULTIMA ONLINE. But well I cant have that. So I'm playing GW and I'm enjoying. Right now i think that #1 is a correct place to be. Let's see when they release the expansion. Cheers

I have stated this on another post but I state it again Guildwars is not your typical mmo with level grinding, seemless world, run into hundreds of people in one area MMO. Guildwars is an MMO though think what does mmo mean massive multiplayer online: Which means a lot of people playing the same game all at the same time. It does not say how or where the players have to be just as long as everyone is playing the same game. It is true that guildwars use's districts to break up server population but the districts can talk to one another unlike Eq for instance were its multiple servers where players cant talk to someone on a another server. A game that is not a MMO is Neverwinter nights it has thousands online at any given time the difference is it has player created servers each server is running a completely diferent game from the next so no to game worlds are alike in anyway shape or form.

I've played a few older MMORPG's (mostly mud style). Guild Wars is a great MMORPG in my opinion. And yes, it does classify as an MMORPG. The instancing that some people claim makes it not an MMORPG is a wonderful system. It allows you to be able to maintain communications with anyone in the game, while being able to play in an area not filled with campers/griefers/etc. And the henchman system allows most (if not all) areas to be played without another human. I feel this game combines the best qualities of an online game with the best qualities of a single-player game. Granted, the community is not the greatest, but that is the price to be paid instead of a monthly fee. The items are not all that varied, but that keeps the game from turning into a mindless hunt for items. There are improvements to be made, but overall, Guild Wars is a great game, in my opinion.

The only time people communicate thoroughly in this game, is when they are gvging or doing tombs. Teamspeak or the player chat is rarely used unless someone in the team is telling you what to do, to tell you to shut up or to insult you.

And the henchman system allows most (if not all) areas to be played without another human. I feel this game combines the best qualities of an online game with the best qualities of a single-player game.

Henchnmen only serve to make the game more jaded amongst players. One of the reasons that the game gets boring for a lot of people is because of henchmen. A lot of people consistantly play this game as a single player game because they don't like play with other players for various reasons such as their attitudes and gameplay. If Henchmen were abundant then players would be force to take other players, no matter what their class was, with them instead of singling them out as they are now.

Granted, the community is not the greatest, but that is the price to be paid instead of a monthly fee. The items are not all that varied, but that keeps the game from turning into a mindless hunt for items. There are improvements to be made, but overall, Guild Wars is a great game, in my opinion.

Do you (or anyone else for that matter) have proof it's the younger generation causing trouble in the community? How do we know you aren't apart of that age group you are speaking about. Reality is that the trouble going on in the community has nothing to do with younger age groups causing anarchy, but no in-game moderation. It's very rare to hear about players being banned from this game for misbehaving. This game customer service is just as worse as RYL's. Community is chaotic not because the moderators do nothing like RYL, but THERE IS NO MODERATORS.

At least games like EQ and WoW have in-game moderation, granted that it may not be the best in game moderation, but they DO HAVE in-game moderation. This game doesn't so people act stupid. Again, it has nothing to do with age, but the fact that there is no form of in-game order.

Do yourself (and this applies to other accusers too) and stop stereotyping the younger generation of age 17 and below groups to cover up GW's short comings.

Where exactly in there did I blame a particular age group? Or even mention age at all? You might want to more carefully read a post before attacking someone about it.

Personally, I don't blame a particular age group. There are many mature players who are younger than me, and many immature players older than me. There is no way to properly attribute the community problems to a particular age group. Rather, it should be attributed to a particular mentality, that of not recognizing and respecting the other players in the game.

Oh, and Guild Wars does have in-game moderation. Yes, it's rare to see it, but it does happen. And the reporting system works. I've personally reported several offenders who are now no longer in the game. There is only so much that ArenaNet can do, especially without charging monthly fees.

You were hinting at the fact (it's in your quote by the way) that because this game is free that younger age groups are the problem so you can stop. As you didn't implicate why you mention this game being free, being a problem. This isn't play time, this is the adult world so if you are so much hinting, it's the same thing.

Oh, and Guild Wars does have in-game moderation.

In-game moderation is where you can file a complaint in-game. You can't file a complain in the game so you can stop lying. At the most, you file the complaint out of the game, but by the time anything is done, the griefer will have already left.

I've personally reported several offenders who are now no longer in the game.

Probably because they've already moved on to something else or merely got the character erased, which they can make again. I saw a guy name Black Nagger, I had reported off-game and saw the name again a month down the road.

Like I said, one of the reason this game community is horrible and the co-op is horrible amongst players is because they are rude and jaded from each other. With henchmen and no in-game moderation, GW isn't going to continue to frustrate players from playing this game and may cause current players to leave.
