The above link is a new article that lays out a lot more information about what it means to be a GM for Hero's Journey. It includes a picture of the toolset, and a lot of information about how it lets you help shape the HJ world.
This is truly a professional position, with paid artists on staff creating the looks you use to put together the world, and paid programmers that respond rapidly (like within hours if not sooner) to requests for enhanced tools or new building assets.
Its been a real pleasure working with the team and the staff of Hero's Journey so far, hope to see you there, take a chance and help make the MMORPG youve always wanted to play.
The application is here: http://www.play.net/hj/info/apply/home.asp

It is! To quote one of the world builders, "It's like playing with gigantic legos!" Only you get *tons* more pieces.

It sounds like tons of fun, I put in my application. Here's hoping!.. and here's for an awesome product in our new future! Can't wait!
I'd help, but I'm under 18 years of age.
What is with that age limit anyway? I'm capable enough to be at least a GameHost in GSIV, but I can't even do that. I'm saddened.
At this stage of production, I'd imagine it has something to do with being able to be legally bound by a non-disclosure agreement. That might even hold true after release, since you'd technically be working on/creating upcoming areas or quests for the game. If they hired a world builder who couldn't be bound by the NDA, they could technically get away with releasing information prior to its implementation. I'm not saying you'd do that, but they have to think of the worst case scenarios for that stuff in order to prevent potential disasters.
As far as advocates/game support positions go, it wouldn't surprise me if they were more open with that area than with development/design departments, though I don't believe they've even started looking for support personnel yet. It's all speculation from me at this point, though. I'm sure someone with an HJ or SIMU tag could shed more light their hiring plans and procedures.
Your correct about your assumptions...
Currently hiring is not occuring for customer support staff yet, there will be an announcement when that begins.
And yes, the 18 age limit is due to legal binding NDA reasons.
Nuts.
I wasn't necessarily going to be an HJ GM...probably more of a GSIV GH, considering I'd know what I'm doing more.
Well this is a great oppertunity for the community, I'm signed up.

Sounds kind of fishy to me, did you see the compinsation, it was pathetic, you basically making the game for these guys and they reap all the reward, boy thats a business plan, get a bunch of nobodies to put together your game and tell them that you can get great experience, ya, great idea, who would actually do something like this, that tells me that the quality of the game will be terrible, NO I'm sorry CHEAP, you can't expect to make a top quality game with a bunch of people who aren't qualified to make one. I'm not saying that it wouldn't be fun but it sounds like the company is taking advantage of people like us.
They've been doing it for 15 years. The quality of their games is unmatched.
Why? Because the people doing it want to do it to improve the game they love, and that in itself is a reward. That's being passionate about the game. Everyone else just does it for a paycheck.
That is exactly what they want you to think, I mean I'm sorry but all your doing is making some other guy rich. I understand being passionate about something but there is a difference between passionate and niave or getting taken advantage of. Like I said, I think it would be fun I just think that it's kind of shady, to ask people to make your game for you and their trying to say that it's going to be a quality product. Just doens't make any sense, thats like trying to make an advanced airoplane and you hire a bunch of people who have little experience in the field but they think airoplanes are cool and you ask them to make the plane for you and you expect it to be the next big thing, just doesn't make much sense.
That's what I know. Simu makes other games, most of which I've played. They ooze quality.
It may not make sense, but it doesn't have to if it works.
It must work, they are still around after fifteen years and they are still small-time, I just think trying to get people to make your game for you and give them nothing in return doesn't sound like it's going to be a promising game and I can't see how it's going to successfully work when it's never been done before, not in a "text-based" game, I'm talking about a real game, one with moving pictures.
Positions that require the signing of a contract will be paid position. Oh, an it's actually been 17-years -- GemStone was released in 1988 if my memory serves me correctly. We do have a graphical game as well... Cyberstrike has been up and running now since at least 96 or 97, I believe.

ya, I'd like to know how many people actually played that game, I saw it on the site and it looks pretty bad and the fact that you say that it's still running doens't make a difference, no one cares,. and I'm sure a company that gets people to make stuff for nothing has a lot to offer in a contract, I'd love to see that contract, you must work for Simu, I'm sure your probably agitated with my remarks I just try to call'em like I see'em, this company looks a little shady, I've read stories about video game companies using people, there was a story about EA on how they treated their people, I think it's crazy, I've always thought that making games would be fun and fair but it doesn't appear so.
It's a standard NDA saying that we can't take what we know about the game to other companies.
No, I'm one of the independant contractors they're 'taking advantage of' I'm not agitated with your remarks, I just think you're uninformed. You're entitled to your opinion, but we've been in business and in excellent standing with our gaming community from the start; we provide a level of interaction and participation with our players that you'll never see in any other MMORPG - to the point where we're giving the people who want to play the game both a chance to offer their input as to what they want in a game as well as a chance to try to do it themselves if they show the potential.
I was brought on several months back; however, before that I did coding for them in 96/97 and, once I broke out of my training period (4-6 weeks if I recall), I was paid regularly without fail. So, take some time, read play.net's message boards, read some reviews of our games, learn about the company and then post about any specific concerns and I'm sure they'll be addressed.

Over one million. And counting.
To clarify ... when the game goes live, our GMs will be recieving monetary compensation. We pay our contractors based on a percentage of monthly revenue ... so they'll reap rewards and benefits when the game goes live and is the great success we're all working to make it.
Rupart, there's really no need to insult our other products.
I have a Question for the GM's. I have a friend who put in an application to become a GM and has received his phone call and has 3 weeks to do whatever work they asked him to do to demonstrate his skill. He told me about Hero's Journey upon learning this and I have become amped up about a game from the creators of Gemstone. Would there be a way possible to put him as a kind of reference or what not on my Computer Literacy even though I dont have a lick of computer experience but I do have tons of MMO and creative design experience? I would really like to become a part of the Hero's Journey Team but I am afraid my lack of programming experience may hinder this.
Computer Literacy is a plus, of course, but not every GameMaster needs to be a programmer. We ask everyone the programming questions, regardless of whether they apply as a World Builder or as a Developer (Scripter) because it's good to know the sum of a person's strengths. But programming skill is not REQUIRED for a World Builder.
Use every question you can to prove the depths of your creativity and understanding of game design. You'll do fine.

Right now, all positions are voluntary. When the game goes live they will be paid positions ... but the amount will differ depending on productivity, rank and seniority. The amount also differs depending on the amount of revenue generated each month by the product. So the answer is ... it depends.
