Hi all!
I've experienced almost every major MMO since 2003. Throughout the progression of these MMOs, I've certainly noticed the increase of unpleasant communities.
I'm not much of a Role-Player. However, I used to always role on a RP / RP-PvP Server simply because the community seemed less obnoxious. I would, however, follow the naming rules of the server and would respond to any "private rp-message" with a quick "role-playish" reply.
The poblem now is that the communites have gotten so bad that even the RP Servers are plagued with the ignorant. This goes way beyond the "ChuckNorris", "SkillCosby", "Lollerskates", and "Gankenstein" character names.
I'm at the point now where I'd be willing to spend over $15.00 per month on a more "policed" and fruitful community server.
This is just me, though. How would you feel if a new game offered the following poll?
Comments
No, I am tired of these MMO publishers who think that because they decide to do something, no matter what it is, no matter how small it is, they feel they can add some cost to the game.
What? $15.00 isn't enough? It was in the past?
What give's these publishers the ability to ask for a fee?
Quality. Good customer service and on going development to fix, polish and add continuous contnet to keep the game relevent.
The evolution of this has been on the part of these publishers to keep subtracting more and more value from these games while not compensating the players who are expected to pick up the tab.
These new a-la-cart revenue models are a slap in the face.
It's not the subscription based revenue model that is failing, it's the publishers who feel that they can charge fifteen bucks a month to do nothing more than keep servers plugged in and that anything after that is chargeable.
No! If they want to charge a monthly fee, then they need to provide a service that warrents that fee. And keeping environments specific to certain playstyles that has no impact on the development of the game itself should certainly be included. It always has been in the past.
I feel your pain OP - As the population of the MMO community has grown over the years so to has the number of asshats. Entire guilds of griefers or just plain jerks have popped up who get as much fun out of bothering others as they do in actually playing the game.
Unfortunatly there is little you can do, with the anonimity provided by the internet players are essentially able to do/say what they please to be as obnoxious as possible in MMOs. Unfortunatly its not just kids, there seems to be no shortage of 'adults' more then happy to troll in games as well. It's truly a losing battle and the only thing I think you can really do is fill up your ignore list.
The cool thing to do these days seems to be to make as obnoxious or witty a character name and guild name as possible and be as loud and obnoxious as possible while playing the game.
I do agree also there is a complete lack of moderating in game by most AAA MMOs - for instance in Star Wars I've seen numerous outright ractist character names and comments...for instance there is a character named "Biplipjamal" with the last name "blaxonblondes" on my server who I have seen in numerous warzones.
in terms of MMO's it isnt possible to be anonymous any more, your ip is logged to your account with an isp, which means, it is always possible to identify the address of the router at least, that was used to connect to the internet, in the UK at least, BT and TalkTalk just lost a court case in which they would be forced to give up ip address/real address and under certain circumstances, remotely disconnect them from the internet, but the OP is more concerned with 'moderators' for MMO's who would i guess, enforce naming conventions and inappropriate behaviour in the games themselves, an expensive proposition, and i can't help but wonder how much it would actually cost, and how effective it would be.
@OP
Yes. I am ready to pay 'premium'. Picked "other" anwer though as this is conditional :
- Only if this is PURE P2P* server without any cash shop / microtransactions / RMAH , etc crap though.
*B2P would work as well ,but I doubt anyone would make a mmorpg without sub and cash shop and live only for selling expansions - since even GW2 will have some cosmetics , maybe skills ,etc sold - but hopefully will stick to GW1 shop strategy
@Phry
Naming enformecent was and is already done in few mmorpg's.
Not so costly it seems. Especially that players report names , mods only change them (+give rename token to player so he can choose name he likes more but withing the rp / lore rules).
I voted other, and this is pretty much the same as my opinion. Moderating the chats and removing offensive names/players hsould not be that much of a problem. Yes I know the old thing about - they will just get another account, but then you ban that one too, ad infinitum.
Currently bored with MMO's.
I say no. RP has changed too much. Going back to EQ, plenty of people roleplayed. There was sort of a feeling that you were "supposed to" roleplay. I blame the existence of a separate /ooc channel and the strictly enforced naming rules. But by and large, people did not sit in taverns emoting, flirting, and vomiting up huge chunks of backstory. They played the game. RP was something you did while playing the game; now it's something most people who call themselves RPers do instead of playing the game. Even if blatant non-RPers were kept out of the server, it wouldn't be my kind of RP anymore.
I picked "other".
This isn't something that should be relegated to a paticular server type.
What you are asking for at the most basic level is... to have the CoC (code of conduct) and EULA (end user license agreement) that EVERY MMO on the market has... to be enforced.
Why should you have to pay extra for that?
When you click "accept" that should be considered a binding agreement. If you don't follow it you get banned... if they don't enforce it.. you sue them for breach of contract.
^^ Now that isn't something I really want to see happen and I hate courts in general. It just seems beyond stupid to have some legal firm represent your company and draft up these agreements... that all your customers have to "accept" and then not enforce them.
In fact instead of a "quality server" I think there should be Moron servers. If they don't want to ban these people... when they violate the rules they get moved to a moron server. Their ability to create characters becomes limited to the moron servers and they cannot post on any official forums.. except for .. yes obviously.. the moron forum.
This way the company still gets the subscription money... all the non moron servers get rule enforcement... and people can find other "like minded" people to group with regardless of server.
Voted other. I'm skeptical of almost anything offered in the current market. What I see is more hype driven sales and less quality value and service in MMORPG offerings. My concern with premium service is that it would fall short of meeting design objectives and be little more than another gimmick to milk extra cash from the playerbase.

Enforcement of existing TOSes needs to happen. I'd consieder that part of any monies that I give a dev team.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
I agree to an extent. I've always been against the ability to earn any item or benefit from outside of game via Micro-Transaction, Pre-Order, Collector's Edition, Convention Exclusive, Cross-Promotion, etc. I can't stand it.
However, if a developer did offer a truly "policed" and more staffed server, I'd be willing to go for it. When I say more staffed, I'm talking way beyond the ordinary server. I'm talking about a 24-7 moderator for each and every populated zone / chat. This would provide instant access to remove instant gold selling ads, bad names, racial comments, answeringtickets within 5-10 min, enforce RP server rules, etc.
Even an extra 5-10 bucks from subscribers would be able to support a 12-13 per hour support staff.
Well, I would be willing to pay the salery for 2 or 3 GMs at my server that keeps the rules. That should be 2-3 bucks per player on the server.
I don't think it would be hard to find a player or 2 that would be willing to play the game as a work, I have a feeling most of those people actually would put more hours into it than what they were getting payed for.
But the extra cost should just cover the costs for the GMs, nothing else. A P2P game should really afford this anyways, but I still would be willing putting in some extra bucks.
If we assume that the server would have about 5000 players 3 bucks a player should be more than enough.
I could care less how other people act personally. I find myself able to cope with people and do not feel the need to announce I put someone on ignore.
My 13 years of MMO history, and my Ignore list is as follows:
Yeah... never used it.
I would pay extra for an increased difficulty server with more policing, so I can actually have some kind of challenge while I play a game. I would not just pay for extra 'fool removal'.
I can always choose to ignore spammy idiots and people with stupid names, it can be an easy way to spot the fools.
Hell yes!!!
i voted: Yes - Whatever the cost!
Thats the main reason why i don't play mmorpg's anymore
I would really enjoy a game where they vetted every new player. Sure it would drive a lot of people off but that is the point.
Basically only serious players who were particularly looking for a server with all in theme names role playing and an interest in challenging content would be willing to go through the vetting process and this is exactly what we want.
Let them start off somewhere else and when they get fed up with the bullshit a simple vetting process would not be too big a price to pay for a quality server.
I do worry somewhat about who would have the authority to decide who could play but that could be solved IMO if people were serious about a serious server.
You would probably never convince a mainstream company to do this though.
I agree. However, it's hard to do that on a RP-PvP Server when the person attacking you is named, "JillKews". I saw that name several times on the server I play on. I still can't believe it has not been changed yet.
In my post I have stated what I feel should be. unfortunately, it's not the way it is.
So, in the end, If I have to make a choice where I can pay 15 for the norm vs 17-18 for policed?
It grates on me to say it because I think they should be policed anyway, but Yeah, if my overall experience is improved, and IF THE GAME IS ACTUALLY WORTH IT. I might pay.
But not without making a stink about it 1st. LOL
for the elimination of the terms wtf, bro, troll, tryhard, fail, epic, noob, fanboi, scrub and all forms of racist insanity from our vocabulary as humans I would pay anywhere from $500-1000 dollars.
Yeah, Anarchy Online, Atlanean server has a PVP org called Cunning Stunts. Drove me up the wall every time I saw that.
lol.
Sayings like "bro", "fail", and "u mad?" annoy me to no end. It makes me want to completely pummel every High Schooler with the following hair cut:
It takes a lot to get me angry. However, when I see this haircut, I turn into a raging bull. I have no idea why. Perhaps it's because most kids that have it also have some type of cocky aura.
The problem would be the crazy cost of policing them. They had an RP server that was policed in DaoC. That lasted a little while and then they just could not keep up.
Griefers will flock to a server like this just to troll etc. It would not last long I am afraid. If it could I would be there in a second.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Pimpin' in yo Theme Parks G.
As I suggested before the obvious answer is to not allow open signups.
I chose Other for the same reason. I'd pay extra to be on a premium server, but microtransactions beyond that premium price would turn me off.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein
