However, yes, you can use a ranger in melee. But staying permanently in melee with any class is a bad idea. A good player will most certainly always have a ranged and melee weapon set at any one time
hmm so maybe warrior then...i was hoping for a quick light warrior like the DND ranger
If you play as a warrior purely in melee you'll die a lot in harder content too. Not to say you can't be purely melee, but i wouldn't want you in my team if you did that all the time Having the ability to get 'out of the fire' and do some damage from range is going to be important from time to time.
The ranger basically is a quick and light warrior in terms of playstyle with the sword. It's all about movement.

I watched a ranger use a 2h sword in a PvP video. It's hard to tell what will be viable this early on. I made this spec (they updated traits on this site). Focused on mobility and bleeding. Figured I could switch between 2h and Shortbow when needed.
OP have you thought about a theif maybe? They have daggers and guns. Seems more up your alley with the melee and ranged attacks. Best of all they dont' have a pet.

Or a warrior... which has 2 ranged attack weapons, one for single target and one for AoE, and a lot more mellee attacks.
Rangers in GW2 are all about their pets.

Yes, a melee Ranger is viable. The only melee weapons the Ranger has are the Sword and the Greatsword. Axes are used as ranged weapons. The Ranger has average armor and average health but the pet gives a lot of extra survivability.

There is a beta running now (started December) though it's under NDA.
Every player will want to learn all their weapons, so they can remain adaptable. Even if you play a melee focused ranger, you'll want to learn and understand your other weapons. That being said, slotting 2H and Dual Wield as your two active weapon sets for a melee Ranger builds should be completely viable. Plenty of mobility, plus the help of the pet.
Anyone who has ever played the White Lion class in Warhammer online can tell you that a melee character with a combat pet can be very effective, if played properly.
No profession has a weapon type just for show. Each possible weapon load out is viable, but the playstyle best matched for each weapon set and build will vary. It's no different for Ranger, just because they have "Range" in their name.

Not directed at you because I'm sure you know, but the name ranger does not have anything to do with range as in distance, instead it has to do with range as in 'piece of land' or as in 'to move around a piece of land'. Think the ranger Aragorn or better yet, think park rangers.

Indeed.
Yupp, ranger is more of a lifestyle choice than an actual profession in a rpg sense.
As for OP.. Imo what you're looking for is a Warrior which you can spec with traits for speed and dps. GW2's ranger is primarily a pet class and if you don't want your gameplay to center around pet-owner synergy, ranger is really not for you. Playing a ranger without a pet will seriously gimp your play - it would be like playing a warrior in light armor or a thief without stealth.
I'm also split between melee ranger and warrior (using ranged when necessary ofcourse) however the rangers melee weapons are quite limited either a 2h sword or sword and dagger, I like dualwielding more but I'd rather dualwield two beefy swords or axes and warrior has both, but I like the ranger concept overall more.

Lol, i know, my friend's dog got an invite from a magic pack of beans.
It might be interesting but I wouldn't go melee on a character that was designed to be ranged, but that's just me... I'd rather choose Thief for melee.

Thats where you are so wrong, no character is designed to go fully mellee or ranged, all characters are a mix between mellee and ranged abbilities.

No-one's 'in beta' at the moment

If it can use melee weapons then yes. The only limiting thing about the ranger is to be effective you MUST have a pet.

Thirty years of gaming experience...not sure if I should be proud of that

The pet is always there, you can do without it but it will be better to have it. Seriously, the freaking thing can revive you for God sake.
This is not a game.
I am not exactly sure how what you said is different from what I said.
Someone wants to be Strider.

Does the ranger have mellee weapons? YES, then he is as viable at mellee as he is at ranged combat..

I also love the melee-ranger concept, but i decided to go with a dual wielding warrior in GW2. Speed and armor - what more do you need ?

I hope a mdps ranger is viable.
I loved the WL from Warhammer. It would be great if you could tame a white lion in GW2 and actually be able to play with a non buggy pet.
