It Might Be The End...

.....of my MMO days. Not that many people here may care because no one knows me.. But i chose to vent this here because someone might read it. MMOs have evolved to satisfy the casual gamer is many senses. Not to say that MMOs that are built around solo play isn't good, but doesnt appeal to me..I just dont see any games like Vanilla Final Fantasy XI. I know that in order for a game to be successful in today's MMO market it is in the interest of most MMO designers to not make a game so difficult as Final Fantasy. Especially force people to group to move past a cetain level range or to even hit max level at all. But that kind of gameplay is what I loved. The reason why is because i always got an "Overwhelmly exciting sense of accomplishment" when i finally got a party and gained a few levels or was able to move on to the next zone.

To all people who miss this kind of PvE challenge and style of gameplay in order to progress, I ask that if you know a game as challenging as Vanilla FFXI, please be so kind to share your knowledge of it. I would be so aprpeciative. Thanks and everyone have a wonderful night.

Nothing out there, I quit mmos a few months ago, even if there was a good solid mmo , you still would have to deal with the pathetic community . I am enjoying  Torchlight and Mortal Kombat now , waiting on Torchlight 2 .

I think almost every mmo have a mix of solo quests/group quests, actually there are a lot of games that requires a lot of team-work. Mostly on the endgame, actually i returned to DCUO for the combat/teamwork system, its not a classic smash 2 skills and it appeals to me, you could also try RIFT its a massive huge teamwork game based, and if you search a little, there are a lot of mmos like the ones mentioned, good luck buddy.

Hell, even if UO-Ultima Online still have some great PvE/PvM...good god i would love to play that. But it is definitely not what it used to be. Some veterans told me its complete garbage now. As that is their opinion...such stuff ive read in articles as well pushes me away. ~_~

yeah ive tried rift and i loved it. but it had something about it i couldnt really hang on to. I have realized endgame team orientated mmos are a many..but how many force you to group a full party usually to progress at all is my question. I appreciate the post on rift. i might return to that if tera isnt as good as i think it will be.Tera~ Open Beta Test: April 19th - 22nd

Ahh, I feel your pain my friend. I too remember those times back in XI...but those are no more. I have yet to find a game that rivals the time consumption and difficulties that XI had (and in some ways, still does) I suggest possibly keeping an eye on XIV though, I'm playing it currently and from what I can see, a lot of content "requires" a party...but I would only keep an eye on it until 2.0 and beyond, I mean it is SE...they may end up doing something similar...

but until then I wish you luck in your endeavors, no matter what you choose afterall, most console rpgs force grouping :3

There actually wasnt a need to post this thread...there was a "want".

And yeah, so what if i feel like stooping to lazy games might be my only way to continue my mmo days. doesnt mean i will...its only a feeling. or a supposed maybe.  [mod edit]

There are still challenging journey oriented games out there.

One example is a Japanese game I'm playing called Mega Ten (link).  It's slow leveling, has a surprisingly good community, is very active, has no auction house instead features player run stands, has a fairly strong death penalty with XP loss, has decent instanced dungeons with no LFD tool, and dungeon grouping is quite common.

I stopped playing mmos this year, the most i spent was in that crapage SWTOR 3 days and then i wanted a refund.

Now i waste my gaming time with Good old Games from Gog.com , this month is Panzer General II, next month probably i replay for the 1000th time Fallout 2, or Tactics or maybe something else. Oh i finished ME 3,  mediocre at best, wont buy anything soon from EA/Biofail.

MMOs as we know them are dead, only a few very rough from small developers are still around. This trend will only go up (worse), the current generation of consumerism and holding your hand when you piss is leading the developers now. While i agree mainstream can be only/or concentrated for casual players (not a bad thing), they should also concentrate on veterans that promoted this genre too (niche mmos, niche pc games), but since we are not that many, we dont count anymore, unless you are a small company, and huge gazilion of casual players are not for your game.

For weak minds, casual players are not bad, good or w/e is just that these days all we get is developed for them, just becaused they are more than the old mmo players. In that aspect most of the mmo gamers today, have no ideea or played anything before WOW, they have absoluty no ideea, what features we had available back then and when they see them "OMG do i have to work/think for this? Fuck this!" I really cant wait to see the Leaders, CEOs and Managers in the next 15-30 years and their IQ, its gona be a new Idiocracy.

Quantity > Quality these days. Move on, nothing to see here.

    Have a good one mate.

I loved UO till carebear land came back. A few of us gave it a try when we had nothing to do about a year ago. For me it wasnt playable anymore. Some may still like it though I guess. Carebear land ruined that game

Every time i read this forum there is always someone looking for a game like the old days. I would think someone who worked at a game company would notice this. The pendulum will swing back one of these days. There will be a real coop mmorpg. I just started DDO and hope at higher levels it will be easy to find groups and do the coop stuff. But so far it seems really casual.

I don't want to sound offensive or start an argument, but FFXI is not that hard, and almost seems easy compared to something like Everquest.

I think time-consuming is the word you all are looking for.  Any game with levels and gear means you can simply level up and gear up to defeat a challenge.   That in itself is not challenging.  It is spending time to be able to do it, period.  There are mathematics involved in combat between player and monster, and if you don't have the stats and abilities to defeat the creature, your real life skill in clicking abilities and running around will do you no good.

For all of you who want challenge, wait.  Guild Wars 2 is stepping it up by adding player dodging, but that is not enough.  The day is coming when companies will make games as challenging as Tetris or even Battletoads (though 'toads is definitely over the limit for many).  I know I will be happy when skill matters, and challenge in RPG's is finally attainable.  Until then, I wait.

My blog is a continuing story of what MMO's should be like.
