Lots of mistakes with this review I need to point out.
Finding a group for that story quest at the end of the Island of Dawn is not needed, you do not need a group at all, it is completely solo'able.
Footprints in the sand and water effects are in KTera, it is clearly just something missing in Beta.
I see nothing wrong with combat animations at all.
You continuously said you went exploring and went through zones where I know BAMs are nearby, yet you never mentioned them once and stated that 1) there seemed to be no grouping areas, and 2) nothing was really that challenging. When you saw the giant mobs did you ever try attacking one??
Also the LFG will be added on release and how are you having so much trouble finding a group, you had a lancer. They find groups in a heartbeat.
AND THE WORST PART, was you saying there was no PvP, you were not on a PvP server where PvP was non-stop everywhere you went, 200man guild vs guild, 10v10 deathmatches for money and constant ganking.
What happens at 20?
BAMs start appearing at 20, the BAMs very close to the areas I saw you walk around in were... Fimbrilisks, Lanok, Kumas, Nagas, Basilisks and Arakia. The first dungeon and access to glyph system also become available at 20.

1. Its the art style, female look like that because its the art style. Second your worry about character with too little cloth? the game is rated M, parents shouldn't even been buying their kids this game -.- some people like it some don't
2. the graphic is better than all game current out, you might went to check your setting.(note i meant gaphic quality not style)
3. I like to know whats wrong with the animation? So far i have no problem with it.
4. those instance are all soloable.... you don't need party need finish any of those story line quests.
5. the game open up at lvl 20+ where you can go to mutliple zone to lvl
6. the exp penty is off set with party bonus, so a mob that give 100 exp would give 100 when you solo, but when you kill in party of 2 you get a 20% bonus so you get 120exp breaken off in to 60 exp each. but because your killing twice as fast your getting more exp over all.
7. Not focus on PvP.....? open world FFA, lot of people love it. Guild war is 24hrs long, and seriously if you were on a pvp server you know what i mean. Also we are getting 4 way server war soon. Also you can set up death matches anywhere form 1v1 to 10v10 anywhere at any time.
8. At lvl 20 its not the glyph that changes the game, its the BAM and first dungeon. Which from what you said you have yet to do either, The instance you been talking about are all soloable and meant to be soloable. The real dungeon require a team and are much much much more fun difficult to complete.
9. No game this polished release F2P.
10. Gear wise, you can create different gear templete to change how your armor looks.
While it is your first impression there is lot of misinformation in there.

Thanks! Obviously, a first impression where I'm trying to level to experience as much content as possible will cause me to miss stuff. It is just a first impression of a game that I think is pretty good.
I did have to cut some details for time. One of the details I cut was that when we went back to do the original instance, which the game does not indicate is soloable, we were given a healing npc to help us. This did not apply to the level 20 dungeon. We did find a group for the level 20 dungeon that wanted the lancer, but they didn't want me. We found a healer who, if she had joined our group, certainly would have helped us find 2 more dps. Unfortunately the healer joined a group that only needed a healer. The LFG tool is working now. What I say about it in the video is accurate.
Obviously there will be things that are better in the live game, hopefully the small details like footprints will be fixed.
Nothing is wrong with combat animations per se, but most games have much more spectacular animations than does TERA. I continue to be amazed that some of the best combat animations are found in games that are over 5 years old.
We saw a couple giant mobs and got worked. They were also easily avoided. As I said, it seems this game has an identity problem in that it doesn't know if it wants to be solo or team. For much of the game you are penalized for teaming and don't need to team. This makes the small percentage of areas that do require teaming problematic.
I mentioned that I was on a PVE server. If the PVP servers are filled with amazing PVP and the PVE servers are just completely left high and dry then I stand corrected. Since I've never seen that this is the case in any game I'm a little surprised at what you're saying, especially if you're referring to levels 1 through 20. I specifically talked about the lack of PVP options outside of ganking in the lower levels. Will a level 15 player get to enjoy a 200 man guild vs guild battle?
Lots of mistakes with this review I need to point out.

Well there is no penalty for being grouped, xp is split because two people are killing a mob, but you kill it twice as efficiently as you would if you were solo, on top of that they reward a 20% xp bonus on the halved xp for being in a group, so in a sense I would say you are rewarded.
Also although the BAMs are avoidable, nobody avoids them because they are really fun and challenging to fight, you can just grind repeatable quests for them and level up quickly that way while farming lucky eggs off the quest turn ins for potions and such.
Being the closed BETA with a level cap yes, their was PvP at all times, just about everywhere. I know on Valley of the Titans there were battles going on for mobs, at dungeon entrances and obviously scheduled 10v10 duels for money and bragging rights. As well guild vs guild was on-going because you can just declare war with anyone for a fee.
Generally it was people at the max level for the cap that particular BETA that were doing the majority of the PvP though tbh.
I personally find TERA to be a group based game, it's perfectly solo-able but everything is more fun in a group and having a nice guild to turn to for people to group with is always best. I spent probably 20-30 hours in a group this weekend farming BAMs, the instance, or going on PvP expeditions.
I still can't figure out though what's wrong with combat animations, maybe I am missing something, I personally like them more than WoW or Rifts because they have a good feel to them and power behind them.
There are two type of instance in this game, 1 which is the story quest instance which it say require group but as you stated people had trouble finding people for them and they gets stuck on story quest so they nerf them to be all soloable. However the 5 man thing was never taken out. Those instance only have 1 quest for them. Now dungeons instance on the other hand all have hand full of repeats and good amout of boss in them. They are much more challenging and you have to dhave to a group to do them. These have a timer on them, the timer starts the moment you enter the dungeon, so if the timer is 1hr and takes you 1hr to finish the dungeon since you enter you can restart right awaly. But if you finish faster than 1hr you have to wait until 1hr is up. Its not really an issue at end game where you have more than enough dungeon to rotate around where you never really have any down time.

Well, again, I liked the game. That said, if I join another Beta I think I want to join your guild! Sounds like tons of fun! Too bad I'll have to start over for not preordering. =(
I may add an annotation on the pvp. This seems to be the one area that I may have missed the mark as opposed to just having a differing opinion.

/y OMG NOW WAT IS SO DIFFERNT AT 20?!
Prejudiced how? In that I liked the game?
Why do people always take the voice cheap shot? Oh well, at least some people are extremely funny when they do so. The guy who said I sound like Artie Ziff is still my favorite.
didn't they up the respawn rate because its a beta? they had to up respawn rates because of the amount of users that was going through the areas and wiping everything out.
While you mentioned you weren't going to play tera, I would like to know what you were expecting the game to have before you tried it out? What were you looking forward to in the game? What didn't meet your expectations?
I'm reading a lot of forum posts and video review, and none really specifiy what they were expecting, so all i know is they tried the game, didn't like it for whatever reasons, but that doesn't stop people who were never interested in playing tera to do a bad review in the first place. It would be nice to know what you were expecting, why you were excited at giving Tera a try, then find out what was disappointing in regards to what you expected.
For all I know, you might have been expecting more from the game than it was offering (not saying you are, but its a possibility. Helps to clear this up in the first place).
Also in regards to the story quest and having to run around a lot, that's not quite true. Each story quest will bring you to a new section in that zone. There are a number of zone quests around each story quest npc. If you do the zone quests around that npc and the story quest before moving onto the next story quest mob, you do not really need to run back and forth as much. Hope that makes sense.
You also mentioned that if you didn't do the story quest, then you do not know where to go next for more zone quests. I imagine that is the same for any mmo. Story quests are linear progressions showing you where to go to next. If you ignore the story quest, then you will need to find the zone quest yourself. That means finding out where the next area is that is appropirate for your level that has quest.
I played Rift, it was enjoyable for a short while, but I expected it to be very similar to WoW. Tab targetting, standard quests, lfg for dungeon instance etc. I also knew I was only going to be a filler. I gave Rift a try mainly because my friend wanted to play it. Got to end game, did a few raids, but overall it was as expected. To me, playing Tera is more interesting than playing Rift, and the main reason is the combat mechanics. I played a mystic and a priest, and having to control your healing was keeping me interested. So my question to OP is why did you choose rift over Tera? Is it because you had invested time in Rift and don't want to move to any other MMO? Some other reasons?
Your video describes Tera for me. It s fun but just that, no depth, no "I can t wait to log in", just a game. The fun slowly left the more I played it though. Good review.

I may add an annotation on the pvp. This seems to be the one area that I may have missed the mark as opposed to just having a differing opinion.
I think it may have been the server you were on, I know one PvE server was almost dead from what people were saying, I can't remember which one it was though.
Both PvP servers were pretty lively, while Jagged Coast still had significantly less than Valley of the Titans which I know had three guilds or so with 300/300 members and many others that were 100+. The two biggest guilds on my server had just over 200, the one I am in had 50 or so.
Personally like I said, I feel TERA is a very social game and you could potentially go from 20-60 without fighting a single normal mob except ones inside of an instance.
I know at 20 you can grind basilisk repeatable to 22 where you can then grind Naga/Kumas to 24, then Naga Overlords to 26, Fimbrislisks to 28, Ovoliths to 30, Orisks/Basilisks to 33...so on and so forth. These BAM repeatables are group quests, you can solo them but you have to be skilled and it's very tedious to do so.
We were grinding Ovoliths on the Beta and got to 50/5, because repeatable quests can stack so you can just fight BAMs until you feel like cashing them in lol, we may have went a little overboard. Most instance quests also stack, all three quests for the 27 sinestral manner instance stacked and every run of the dungeon I could cash them in for xp and tokens for gear or lucky eggs for pots.
The game won't be for everyone, but I have a ton of fun with it, I think people just don't try to have enough fun and instead just think about doing things in order. When I got bored of something I would just decide to do something else, If we got bored of grinding BAMs we'd PM a leader of another guild and ask to scedule a 5v5 or 10v10 deathmatch and duel it out for some money, or go exploring looking for people to PvP with or do another run of the instance.

you can press p/c to open your character window and there is a instance tab that tell you how much time left.
and ya pvp is fun, our guild held 2 death match pratice thsi weekend on SAT and Sun. we did things from 5v5 till more people came went to 6v6 than 7v7 than 8v8 than 10v10. Was really fun praticing different team combo and learning from people who play ktera. After ward it was just off to guild war or find people to fight =P Never fear of not having pvp , just attack any well know guild an you know they will mass to fight you =D Doesn't really matter if you win or loss just fun over all.

I agree, I went into beta with the intention of not rushing to max level. I did the quests in the starter zone, I gathered lots of mats (pretty much all the ones I came across), when I got off the island, the first stop was to a crafting area to see what that was like. Tried extraction/enchanting. I did get to lvl 20 eventually and did Bastion of Lok in the second CBT with guild. Was playing mystic at the time ( my main class once released is a priest so i picked any other class except priest). I attempted to solo bams for the heck of it, i ran around the place exploring and just to see what areas looked like. Eventually rolled a priest and got that to lvl 20 so i can do Bastion of Lok and get used to playing a priest as I heard the aggro for healing was fairly bad. Got the hang of it and went back to mystic.
Hopefully in the next cbt, I'll be able to get my friend to jump on and I'll start from the start with him and quest/explore and do stuff.
didn't they up the respawn rate because its a beta? they had to up respawn rates because of the amount of users that was going through the areas and wiping everything out.
I don't know, but I had no problem with the fast respawns. Made it more interesting.
While you mentioned you weren't going to play tera, I would like to know what you were expecting the game to have before you tried it out? What were you looking forward to in the game? What didn't meet your expectations?
Tera met my expectations and then some! I wasn't expecting a lot in the first place but I was happy to get the chance to try it out. I had a lot of fun - a lot more fun than I had with swtor - and I think I had a lot more fun than Erik, who I don't think liked it as well as I did. It's funny to me that if you point out flaws in a new game people sort of overlook anything you say about how much you like the game.
I said in the video that story quests tend to be breadcrumb quests that lead you to your quest hubs. I also said that on several occasions the story quests will send you back to areas you've already been. Both of these statements are true.
I played Rift, it was enjoyable for a short while, but I expected it to be very similar to WoW. Tab targetting, standard quests, lfg for dungeon instance etc. I also knew I was only going to be a filler. I gave Rift a try mainly because my friend wanted to play it. Personally, I still think Rift is the best mmorpg in its particular style. For soloing I enjoy the combat in TERA quite a bit more (at least that's my impression - not sure if it's more of a novelty or not.) For group play and dungeons I have no basis to compare. But the whole of TERA didn't impress me enough that I said, "I have to buy this!" Especially considering what I already said on the video - GW2 and TSW around the corner and many f2p titles I'd like to try (I've had STO downloaded for several weeks and haven't even had time to create a character yet!)
Just watched this, it was definitely an honest and thought provoking review.
I liked what you included about the regular quests and story quests, the lack of costumes, no weather patterns and i noticed there were no critters.
very inciteful.
This is the very thing some of us in the community are speaking out against, games that have 0 immersion, that are using ten year old gaming concepts like the quest system in TERA and don't offer anything new, all in an effort to steal the WoW crowd. It's sad really.
Lots of mistakes with this review I need to point out.

I'm really sorry about the voice comment. Was uncalled for, really. I had kind of a bad day yesterday and took it out on your vid by being overly critical.
The vid was pretty well done and clearly narated. It just struck me how you were a tad eager to reach conclusions and a final judgement based on a very limited experience and had limited knowledge of what the game has in store for you. I.e. the stuff which Pivotelite pointed out. Like being able to solo the storyquest which makes your progression issue moot. And expecting the game to make a 180 turn as soon as you dinged 20 at the very end of the beta.
It seems to me you simply didn't have enough hands on time to give your impression the depth you wanted it to have. No offense though, it was a good effort and clearly narated and a valid personal impression. If you would have had more time the impression no doubt would have had more factual beef.
as for the vid, there are things i agree, such as the no water splash, but there are some weather effects in some areas. try looking for the winter snow areas in some of the youtube korean vids, and you will see them. there is also rain, or dust storms in the desert.
i think it was still a good vid, based mostly on just that a first impression . first impressions can always be decieving.
I didn't enjoy your video, and thought you were being too nagative for such a short playing experiance. Good job anyone in their right mind doesn't base their buying power on this kind of impressions, or do they? because if they do, it's just sad!
Enjoyed your video and overall a no nonsense review. ALot better than some of these reviews that have 'thats cool' and 'awesome' in every line. Great voiceover by the way. You Yanks seem to sound better on video than us limeys.

aweful combat animations, specially the melee character on that video
True. Really great combat animations could have helped this game live up to the graphics expectations. It is a beautiful world all in all, though.

rofl! Point taken!
http://www.youtube.com/flymolo

I expected as much. To me, as a non-fan, the commenting on the vid seemed awfully prejudiced / uninformed.<self snip>
*Ding lvl 20*
/y OMG NOW WAT IS SO DIFFERNT AT 20?!
My brand new bloggity blog.

I knew there was some sort of timer but I didn't know how that worked. Thanks for the info

Once again, sorry for the voice remark.
Cheers,
DP

i actually liked your voice!p
as for the vid, there are things i agree, such as the no water splash, but there are some weather effects in some areas. try looking for the winter snow areas in some of the youtube korean vids, and you will see them. there is also rain, or dust storms in the desert.
i think it was still a good vid, based mostly on just that a first impression . first impressions can always be decieving.
Hi,
I didn't enjoy your video, and thought you were being too nagative for such a short playing experiance.
Land of AKA Godzilla with Wifey
Very bad review not objective at all with a lot of irony on your words, learn first what Tera offers to you first and then review it.
