    This..

as long as the players themselves get to choose and are not forced into a certain 'look' then its a none issue, after all, if a guy can butch up in heavy armour, why shouldnt females also be able to do the same thing, its not like they don't want to after all, and if anything i'd hazard a guess that more would prefer to do so, and that the majority of the 'scantily clad' female toons you encounter in games, tend to be played by male gamers. so, give the male gamers who like catwalks bikinis the option to live out their fetishes if you must, but don't restrict it to that.image

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I have to add that in my specific case the player won't be forced to equip sexy armor. You have multiple choices on what to equip and sexy armor will be a vanity-based option in the premium-shop.

But I see it to be problematic to offer "sexy armor" for male characters as it is most likely to be considered "gay-looking". On top of that, in our game there will be a definite majority towards male players and I guess they don't have an interest into male armor skins that are rather skimpy.

Gay people play MMOs too. Sexuality aside, people have all sorts of fashion tastes. Don't underestimate the preferences of your player base.

That's right. But since our game world is sort of postapocalyptic we cannot make everyone happy. The style still needs to perfectly fit into the game's atmosphere. ;)

Sex sells. I say go for the sexy armor. But I agree that the same should go for male armor to make it even.

If you can find a true balance between what looks functional and is sexy then you'll have a real winner. Some games take the sexy aspect to a severe degree, where the females have breasts the size fo watermelons covered by "heavy" armor that looks like two bottlecaps tied together with a piece of dental floss. That one you show, that's quite nice looking, for a light armor in my opinion.

    Oderint, dum metuant.

It's not sexism for me. I find revealing clothes flashy and distracting in game. I end up staring at it instead of focusing on the game

I'd imagine even female players would like to play sexy characters instead of something "normal", it amps up the _fantasy_ in games. But then again this is just my manbrain talking. I do enjoy sexy models/equipment in games i.e the ones in Tera.

Im not one of them.  But there are slews of guys who make female toons just to look at them and make them dance and.....stuff.  And of course they go stampeding for every kind of sexy outfit the game has to offer.

As far as sexist, I dont know.  I mean I live in America.  If you want to see women dressing like hookers just take a look at what any pretty girl is wearing on Halloween.  They sure dont seem to mind incredibly much.  So whatever.

Always hilarious how people have such an issue with the admiration of the female figure.  No matter what your gender and sexual preference, I believe we can mostly agree that the female body is more attractive than the male body.  Designing clothes that show off a little skin is not sexist.  Running a female character out in a bra and panties, while the male character is fully clothed at all times is sexist.  Making all female characters boobs and butts oversized, while all male parts are all normally sized is sexist.  Allowing some skin on the arms, chest, and legs to show is not sexist.  It's what our culture accepts in every day life.

Above all, your co-workers need to understand that sex sells.  If you're a business aimed at anyone other than children, sexual undertones will only help your cause.  If they really want to be realistic, they should be designing army clothes for females in real life instead of creating a video game.

Well, what would be the best way for a female to get ahead in a physically demanding world in a post apocalyptic setting?  Sex.  Most females would use what they have to buy protection, to get the good jobs away from danger, to attract the powerful men..etc.  Slightly revealing clothing wouldn't be out of the ordinary I wouldn't imagine.  Who really knows what it would be like?

I think the biggest issue regarding sexual appeal in games is if it breaks against the game's aesthetic.

If the game is a serious warzone and you have women prancing around in skimpy clothes, then people are more likely to take offense because it's a bit ridiculous at that point.

Whereas if the game is over the top and the men look just as ridiculous then it's less an issue.

You're always going to have prudes whining, but if your outfits don't match your aesthetic you're going to hear a lot of valid complaints too.

Also, giving players a choice helps, if these are characters or avatars players are controlling.  If a woman doesn't want to look ultra-sexualized and there aren't any normal-but-attractive avatars to choose from, that's a potential issue.
