As Good And Varied As WOW But Single Player

jab365jab365 Member Posts: 2

I see posts now and again where someone is after a good single player experience in an MMO. The obvious comment will get posted 'play a single player game!' which makes sense, except for one thing, which is what keeps me firing up WoW when I'd really rather not deal with other people: single player games, as far as I can tell, don't have the depth, polish, variety, and just plain focus on fun that World of Warcraft offers.

I check them all out, but it's all story, story, story and nothing else to do but plow through the story. There are some, like Skyrim, that seem to offer more open-endedness, but I don't see the fun. There's no achievement, as far as I can tell, for jumping off something really high and living. Or, collecting a ton of pets. Or even goofier stuff like /love tons of wildlife, or catch all the catchable fish. And I'm not saying I don't want story, I just want the option to log in and goof off and still get something 'accomplished' (it's a game so even getting the best gear is still just as silly and fake as jumping 20 times on a trampoline without falling ). I love story but when I want pure story, I read a book or watch TV.

The problem is that WoW seems to be the only game that does it all AND is very well polished. The animations are real and feel normal. The cleverness of the textures feels 3D even when it's not which allows there to be far more detail than if you tried to render it all.

Skyrim is the only game that has peeked my interest lately, single-player-wise, as far as openness and freedom but I see nothing fun about it other than making your npc companion get stuck on buggy doors and what not.

I don't necessarily have to stick in Fantasy, but I do like the more ethereal environments for pure escapism.

Seems to me you have two choices in single player rpg's, gritty and depressing and non-fun or the other extreme, cartoon goofy with little meat.

Is there such a beast out there?

Skyrim and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning are 2 of the newer releases.  For the older games I loved Fate and Sacred if your into top down view as opposed to 3rd person as in typical MMO's.

Everything you need to know about Elder Scrolls Online

    Playing: GW2
    Waiting on: TESO
    Next Flop: Planetside 2
Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.

You basically want a good open world MMO that is more sandboxie that doesn’t rely on other people to play.

Unfortunately there isn’t a lot of that. Most of the newer MMOS are theme park focused and force you through a liner story line.

The emphasis on open world content is more prevalent in the older mmos.

Asherons call is probably the better open world MMO that has little to no story line. But it is EXTREAMLY dated.

The money is in theme park MMOs. Just not a lot in the realm of sandbox MMOs that have single player content. You are better off (and i know you don’t want to hear it)  single player games like skyrim.

The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.

The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, solo Questing, Cut-Scenes...

I have been looking for something similar. . something like Fairy Tale Adventure 2 where you can just wonder around points of interest and "live" in the game world.  More of  Fantasy / medieval Sim game (note:  Sim's Medieval is non of this).

If you find something good let me know.

Oh sorry Oli, I forgot to mention Skyrim :)

Here is an ancient link :)
