TOR sub stablizes at 1.7M subs .. what is the impact on the MMO market?

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/mass-effect-ships-3-5-million-worldwide-890-000-sold-in-na-swt/

I guess players are NOT leaving in mass when the sub charge kicks in. So this shows there can be more than 1 big AAA, sub-based MMORPGs in the west.

There is a lot of wiggle room in the numbers given, this is not new news, there have been a number of threads on here over the past week.

    Good for them I say.

If that many people enjoy TOR and want to pay for it then Gratz to BW / EA.

I personally dont like it and think overall its probably a bad sign for the industry. But for the folks that like that kind of game it is good news. Hopefully they will keep updating content and keep those players. We will see I guess.

"the "vast majority" of players have passed the free 30 day trial period that comes with new copies of the game, meaning they are now paying subscribers."

The vast majority of players 30 day trial was up 3 months ago, VGA charts indicate boxes sales plummenting.

So SWTOR has one of the three going for it:

    1) Unheard of retention rate

    2) Incredible digital download sales

    3) Books are cooked.

I would not call a 1.7M subs MMO a flop. Otherwise, there is only 1 game that does not.

You are seriously accusing of a public traded company of fraud? You know people go to jail for giving knowingly wrong information to investors.

And yes, TOR has unheard of retention rate. Last time i heard, they were saying they sold 2M boxes. Retaining 1.7M subs is a 85% retention. That is amazing .. but not unlike one of these analyst has predicted.

if it really is 1.7m active subs then i agree.. only, nobody believes it really, they may be juggling numbers to achieve that 'apparent' number of subs. As it is i just dont see it, i mean, either they're paying and not playing, or somebody is manipulating the figures.. a lot.  my own estimation is probably 1/3rd of that.  maybe. image

those official stat are true at the time of their doing them!this means on the 31 of march when all have finished their 60 days plus the 30 days and need a new time card thoose will be counted only on may!it isnt exactly manipulating !but at the same time, the time of the said counting is still prior to the end of the 60 days end!why would people leave if they still have two week left on their account!i wouldnt leave either lol!

No, he just interpreted what the article said because he thinks OP has missed the point of the article and has no such number of active subs.

With the launch of the massive update called 1.2. We wont see a drop in the population in April, it will grow even more, thats more likely a gg for the haters.

What is your basis of the disagreement of the 1.7M number aside from your OPINION?

Are you accusing of a company official to PUBLICLY lie about their numbers? Do you have a source to show that he is wrong?

    ANd what are they juggling?

The statement is very clear. As of the date of the interview (March 9 2012), they have 1.7 subs and the "vast majority" (my read ... a lot more than 50%) are past the 30 days initial box.

Lol, that's just an attempt of grabbing a straw... Whatever they do, I will never, ever, ever play SWTOR again, and the same goes for my 20 other friends who tried it with me and will never make the same mistake again. The game just misses too much stuff for it to be worth the monthly sub in my eyes. The game population can only drop, considering release of TSW, Diablo 3, GW2, and so on in the near future...

    Sure.

When they first anounced 1.7M, haters have said wait 30 days and the subs will drop like a stone. Well, this is the second update at the 3 month point and certainly subs did NOT drop at all.

We will certainly see if this holds up. But anyone who says they will have less than 1M subs by 3 months is obviously wrong. These people should man-up and admit their wrong predictions.

I wont get into the sub. number, as it has been discussed before, but I think it is far too early to say that SW:TOR sub numbers has stabilized.

For one thing they said end of January that they had 1.7 million subs and now they said nearly 1.7 million subs. What that exactly means is anyone's guess but the sub numbers have not stabilized. The game is far too young for that.

Yes we are... the basis of the disagreement is simple... If almost every server was on population status full/high and had around 2M sold boxes, then if it has 1.7M now the drop of server populations shouldn't be THAT drastic... Only 2-3 server have high population status in it's peak hours. So it's either manipulation of numbers or someones really missed the calculation.

Don't rage so much over this, it's not the first time something like this happened in the world of MMO...

First, you don't have a historical record of server population status. That is your impression. Second, they did not anounce actual server pop .. only a status. Thirdly, people play more when a new game is out. The same number of subs play less now. That may not be an indication of sub numbers.

Look at WOW. When CATA is out . i played night and day to get to 85. Now i play a lot less hours but i am still a sub/active player. So what you said has little to do with sub numbers.

That is, you have no basis to doubt their numbers except but vague impression and your opinion.

check from the first to the last of all my post on swtor and i always said the same thing, most have a 60 day time card plus a free 30 days!then we ll see the real staying power not before, yes some said 30 days (the free time)but i  always thot that most had too a 60 days card since there wasnt much else anyway!but my first time card is soon coming to an end!after that i doubt i ll buy a second 60 day time card!but then maybe i am the only one who baught a 60 days time card!like i said we ll have to wait and see!

me i think there are 1.7 million sub!do they all play it?hell no ,but they are subbed!

EVE = successful game... one of the best sci-fi mmorpg games. Darkfall is another story... Why are you dragging anoter mmorpgs into SWTOR discussion?

What I said is: They are slacking with bug fixes (there's still ATi GFX problem with shadows), Illum failed instead of being fixed, etc, etc... I could go on about this and make a 1000 word post, but I won't do it again because I wrote soo many times what it's missing after I tried it...

First off the number are about as real as Blizzards claim for the last 5yrs.

No impact on the market at all.

SWTOR by definition isn't even a MMO, single player action adventure that plays like Dragon's Lair.

Hell it isn't even a RPG, Unless you are NA gamer.

So the supposely 1.7Million are not MMO players anyway.
