Best MMORTS to Date? [as of March of 2012]

Souleater04Souleater04 Member Posts: 17

Hello folks, I've heard that the MMORTS market is flooded by a lot of crappy cash grabs. I know that most would argue that is what the majority of them are, but that aside, I've always wanted to try one out, but I don't want to waste time to find out that the game is pretty much a scam for your money, and that is about as deep as it gets.

So here is my question: What is the Best MMORTS to date? Or, for those cynics out there, what is the lesser of the evils of the MMORTS genre that does not play like crap? I know there are probably articles about this on various MMO sites, but I'd like to see a general consensus, or maybe find something new that I haven't heard of before.

Well, I guess nobody cares for them just that much.

I tried a few out and they all end the same way. Get in a masive alliance and pretty much just try and greif people into quitting then farm thier cities till the account gets deleted. Or if it's a " friendly " one get in a massive alliance and try and grief anyone that plays against your rules out of the game then farm their cities till the account gets deleted.

Either way I didn't enjoy any of them once you get large enough to get noticed.

What MMORTS games? If the market is flooded shouldn't we be more aware of them? perhaps I missed something?

travian is one of the few that doesnt have softcore porn as advertisement.

Stronghold Kingdoms also lacks the softcore porn...perhaps worth trying? :). rule of thumb: if there's breasts on the homepage, its a terribad game.

Oh okay, I used to see them just as online RTS games, wasn't aware that they are called MMORTS games these day's

    Shattered Galaxy www.sgalaxy.com

Probably one of the best online games ever, too bad it's not populated enough anymore :o

Sadly, it seems there isn't too much to choose from at this point in time :(

There are a million or so such games.  You haven't heard of most of them because the vast majority are very low-budget, low-production value affairs.

Are these games MMORTS's in the sense that you build units and structures, settle area, research technology, etc. and do so in a common, persistent world shared with numerous other players doing the same?  Yes.  Many, many games have these traits.

But most are browser-based games with minimal graphics.  Almost all of them operate over relatively long time periods.  You queue things up, as in EvE, and most of the stuff runs on long timers.  Want to build a battle cruiser?  Twelve hours.  Research some advanced tech?  Two days.  It's stuff like that.

The battles are not what you think they are.  They are realtime, yes, in that there are no turns, but they're not really.  The problem is that the world goes on when you leave the computer.  The nature of MMORTS's mean your holdings are persistent regardless of your online status.  So?  You can be attacked when offline in many of these games, at least to some extent.  There are limits to this in some games, but it can't outright be banned, or it would allow players to hide behind online status.

A final problem is that of entrenchment.  In many of these games, the established power blocs are so enormously powerful that there's pretty much nothing but obscurity stopping them from steamrolling any small or new player.  If there are actually multiple power players, it's a join or die situation.  Basically, once the newbie protection rules stop protecting you, there's often very little you can do.

Many players long for MMORTS's, but when one actually deals with the genre, it honestly has some major flaws attached to it.

Basically, anything that involves strategy in one way or another - be it browser based or not. I don't care if there are timers, I don't care if advanced tech may take a couple days. I really just want to find a nice MMORTS that can pull you in without makinng you shell out ridiculous amounts of cash. Alas, it seems this search is futile. How sad.

If you're willing to put a LOT of work into getting into the required position, becoming a Nullsec commander in Eve Online should definitely satisfy you. I've played quite a few single player RTS games (the original Warcraft trilogy, both Starcrafts, the Homeworld trilogy and quite a few others) and some online ones like Travian and Shattered Galaxy, so I'm no stranger to RTS. The complexities and weight of responsibility of an Eve Online nullsec alliance commander are so advanced compared to anything I have ever seen or heard of that I am honestly afraid to attempt it, and that is the only game EVER that I have been afraid to try any part of.

    You up for the challenge?

    Where's the any key?

Age of Empires Online is pretty good.  Best MMORTS I've played so far.

Warring Factions is probably the best mmorts besides EvE but it has a steep learning curve and only a small player base.

oh come on, the best mmorts game to date would of course be shattered galaxy, even though it has faded away with time.

Back when it was popular it was a blast, without a need to build a city or anything like that, you simply levelled up and assigned stats to earn better units, better equips for em, or expand your squad size. i remember it was a time when the crater ( center of the map) was a source of constant battle and it was a blast to invade and defend it. It was a time when being in one of the factions actually meant something and you were proud to be in it, guilds were fun but the nation was united. It was a social system that meant that if someone called for reinforcement in an area, ppl will flock to it in numbers. It was a beautiful game for its time and i'm hoping end of nations will be able to replace it as the mmorts of this time

and for those of you who suggest nation/city building games as mmorts...... seriously? rts means real time strategy, those games might have strategy but i think real time would refer to games like the C&C series and starcraft/warcraft series right? so yeah....
