Im just at the end of my 14 day buddy trial in EVE, I also have a 60 hunter in WoW.
I dare say though that in comparison the general community in WOW is a bloody Menza convention.
Sure in WoW there are griefers and assholes a plenty, but in EvE, at least the the starter areas there is ONLY this kind of players.
I have no doubt that deep inside some 0.0 space there are guilds and people both brilliant and nice, because quite frankly not any idiot could make it in this game. But if you start this game you will probably never see those people.
Instead you will find that at each gate that leads to anything remotely interesting, there is someone who is waiting to kill you for no other reason but, well I have no clue.
The only relief really is to check your murderers bio after you died and get a good laugh at some of the most stupid crap ever to be placed on the internet, ( and that is saying a LOT ).
I do agree with the PC gamer writer, allthough "suspiciously brown flavour" comes to mind. But, he is preaching for the choir, most anyone who starts this game will only see death and destruction at the hands of people that make the chinese farmers in LineageII look like Gandhi.
I have come to see my role in EVE as some form of amusement to others, the old gankers and griefers that compete with each other how many noobs they can kill in an hour. And my sole purpose in this game is to die in interesting ways for their amusement. ( And please do not tell me to stay in 0.5 or above, because then really, what is the point of this game? )
Honestly anyone who finds that fun needs a lobotomy almost as bad the ones who jumped you.
Excellent game, the skill system alone makes it stand out. Politics, player freedom and whatnot makes this a gem on the MMO market, still I do not think I will continue after my 14 days. Sure i could let the game run and train skills for the next 3-6 months. But paying for 2 minutes of play each day is not an option.
There is carebear and there is hardcore, and there are games were you play a death camp prisoner waiting for your turn to die. Would anyone at all play such a game, unless you are a guard of course comitting atrocities upon the weak and helpless, ( not my idea of fun though but obviously some people would love it ).
Again, one of the most brilliant MMO games ever made, but the system makes it so that it is is completely 100% impossible to ever catch up. It may not have been the most brilliant decision to make it this way if you wanted the game to survive for any real length of time, personally I like it very much, but most people find the fact that you will never EVER catch up to someone who has played even a few months more then you a bit of a downer.
I am quite sure that PC gamer dude is one of the "old people" with 10 million + skill points, and I am sure the game is fun at that point, but there is no way to get 10 million skill points unless you actually wait for over a year, or play, it really doesnt matter, you'll get your skill points in any case.
Impressed with the game, a bit sad that I probably will not play it ever again.

Your assertion that it's impossible to catch up is wrong, because while the old-schoolers may well have the skills to fly several different ships, they will only ever be in one ship when you meet them.
The solution to your problem is to join a corporation that groups up and concentrate your training down one avenue (learning skills first). Each rank of a skill only increases that ability by a small increment so even though you're just starting out it won't take long (unless you're still thinking in WoW time) to get up to scratch.
I respect your opinion though, largely because your post is constructive and reasonable. EvE took me a few tries before I could really get into it, but it's not for everyone.

Ya I played Eve & WoW the prob. is WoW is way to simplefied, & Eve is just the opisite. Eve is frusterating in some areas.
Personally I like the simplicity of WoW. The complexity of Eve soured me on even bothering to try it.
I wish to God I didn't know now; the things I didn't know then.
Yes, a game with designed with a hard learning curve and involving tactics, alliances, politics, trading and bargains vs a game designed for the average blizzard fan.
I'm 99.9 sure Eve's community is a LOT worse
For the record let me state I've tried Eve and didn't really like it either. However it is a more casual game than WoW (you can train skills offline in Eve) and it has better and more intense PVP.
However the long travel and getting started curve can get annoying.
The thing is OP, the earlier skills take a lot less (relative) time to train and higher skills don't mean as much of an advantage.
Eve is the most open, free MMORPG on the market, it has the most intense and most "pure" PvP, but it isn't for everyone obviously (no game is!)
