So I got to thinking, wouldnt it be cool for a game, of any genre or type, to have a real life war in it? I have played SWG and I was looking at LOTRO when I thought of this. In both those games, no matter what, the fact is that the rebel aliance defeats the empire, and the good guys defeat the bad guys in lord of the rings. So what about a game where the actions of the players actually affects the war? I was thinking maybe a nice fantasy game where you can see hundreds of players fight aside you and against you on a huge battlefield.

Didn't some game do this already? It's the one where ppl who like it always talk about realm vs realm. But it had sucky grahpics.
That's the thing, anything like this is going to have horribly low detail and crappy combat. Or more than likely. Why? Because the netcode can't HANDLE hundreds of ppl fighting alongside each other. T hat's the whole point of a mmo, but the tech can't even handle it. You really don't get battles much larger than you would see in a normal fighting game, cuz otherwise you get lagged to hell.
Hell, i've seen larger fights in Battlefield 2 than i've ever seen in a MMO
Remember kids, when you see the lava coming, duck and cover!!!
Still, if there cant be huge battles...yet...why not a game where the things you do actually matter? Everything is too scripted.
I would suggest you look at World War II Online. Though I haven't played it since it came out I found it to be what you describe and I hear it got only better with time.
Planetside is similar but I wouldn't recommend that to anyone. Maybe it was great at the start but it is total crap now.
I think it is called WWII online and Planetside.

Yeah, whoever is fighting better. If you are trying to say the allies are the only ones who will win, then you are wrong. Playing on the axis forces doesn't make you a NAZI. Most German soldiers were really just young teenagers being forced into a war that they didn't want to fight. My grandfather was an American soldier and he was a messenger. He used to run through the woods in France and Belgium and there was a German guy who he used to talk to. This guy was a sniper, but he didn't kill my grandfather even though he could have a 1000 times. This just goes to show you that not every soldier in WWII Germany was an evil Nazi. They may have worn the Swastika, but that didn't make them one of Hitlers Satan lovers.

Network code is not the reason this cannot be done easily. The problem is 3D polygon counts rendered in the average video card. It would be a massive video lagfest.
There are maney MMOs where the PVP determines that out come of the war.
UO has factions that fight over cities
DAoC theres realms that fight over keeps
PLanet side has factions that fight over continents
Lineage2 you fight over castles
I think you can take planets for you faction now in SWG
World War 2 online you are obviusly fighting over europe and you take cities
Knight Online I think theres some for of keeps or towns or something you can take
Shadowbane you can take cities other players made
Helbreath I think ther two cities fight every so offten
Dark and Light you will be fighting over land and sieging cities
Artifact is a MMORTS where you fight over artifacts
Time of Defiance is a MMORTS where you basicaly just conqueer other players
Shatered Galaxies is a MMORTS where you join a empire and fight over land in a giant war
Ballerium is a MMORTS where you fight over controll of cities
in Age of Connan I belive you can fight over player cities in some form but I think consent must be given
There are many many more these are just a few of them.

Yea, I agree. I want an FPS where what i do matters, not just a 10 minute round.
You basically described WWIIOL. What you and your team matters quite a bit. Hundreds of towns to take over. 1 map lasts over a month on many occassions. Graphics aren't the best, but has a 6km viewing distance, so can't have bf2 graphics where you see well under 1k.
Infantry is much like other FPS's, however it takes 1 shot to die 99% of the time. Most equipment is simulator-esqe, in the sense that it has realistic damage models (no hit points, or in other words, if the round is strong enough to penetrate 50mm of metal for example, then you got a shot at killing the crew inside that panzer) and also with a lot of controls (such as gears, engine start, and trim, flaps and other things on aircraft).
battles usually contain 100+ players with a number of battles across europe at any given time.
Anywho, is a fun game, just thought i would let you know about it

yea, it's a mmorpg/FPS, so like most other such games, it's pay to play. Steep learning curve, but best 'newb friendly' community there is. Game is just being rereleased so will be tons of new players.
just a suggestion. seeing lots of green tags (new players) out of the battlefield recently. So us vets are expecting questions and being very helpful.
just throwing it out there : )
FFXI has it's Conquest system where the number of conquest points earned by the nations determines who owns what zones for the next week.
