A nice change of pace from the constant day/night in other games and MMOs, or the day/night not being dynamic and only happening at certain parts of the story.
This is revolutionary because a lot of games are starting to get rid of the day/night, because it is much too hard to code. However, Arenanet sees the power of the day/night and even has certain events happen depending on the time of day.
Arenanet has proven that even the hardest thing to code in a game (MMO or singleplayer) is day/night and they've done it.
Nice job Arenanet.
Day / Night cycle is a great feature that adds immersion and realism, but it certainly is NOT innovative or revolutionary.
DAOC, Vanguard, LOTRO, Xyson and MO, as well as others I cant think of right now all have day night cycles if i recall correctly
Other new games coming out soon such as ArchAge and (I think) TSW have a day/night cycle too so GW2 is not alone there.
Cluck Cluck, Gibber Gibber, My Old Mans A Mushroom
Again, this weather effects and night/day change mechanic is nothing new. At all. Other games did it and other MMORPGs before it did it and many of them did it well.
The thing is, those mechanics have been forgotten and replaced with things to grab the attention of the newer generation of gamers that aren't impressed with playing a game that simply attempts to make them feel like they are in a living world.
Now, GW2 is bringing them back, and all the people who got into this genre post-WoW think it's a revolution.
Kind of cute, but unfortunately, it's still incorrect.

I wish a mmorpg would have a change of season. But is most probably expecting to much. I have played once a strategie game, where they got a change of season, where a river froze and you could use it as passage.. or the other side of it, and the ice broke and your tanks/infantry/whatever broke through the ice.
Day/Night cycle are rather common, but neverthelss better than nothing, or better than not having it.
It was really black, but I played during the few months of the western beta, they might have chickened out later and made night lighter...
Originally in Fallen Earth night was so dark you had to use a Flashlight/headlight (hit 'F', it still works) just to see. People hated it, so it was changed. Honestly even now I find the day/night cycle in FE to be a bit of a pain in the arse and would just as soon see it go the way of the dodo.
I wish a mmorpg would have a change of season. ...
Ryzom and Xsyon are the only games I know with changing seasons. In Xsyon it doesn't matter that much (when I played Xsyon seasons had little effect on gameplay), in Ryzom however seasons are very important because materials harvested at a spot change with seasons.

Wakfu also and I think its predecessor Dofus and again they are important to harvesting but these games are sandbox and there is a reason to have seasons. It would just be fluff in a game like GW2. Heh I wonder if WoW will add seasons now for its farmville aspect coming up in MoP.

LOL
GW2 might become a good game it might even be revolutionary is some aspects but day/night cycle?? I mean come on
A lot of games have it hell FF11 has it and certain monsters do only spawn at night.
Beeing a fan and praising the game is normal but now it really gets out of hand whats the next thing maybe its revolutionary because they allow you to change the games resolution?

Yeah I forgot Xsyon nights. They were good too. And the seasons in Xsyon where snow piled deeper in the winter vs the spring. Very cool feature.
Because people think that a day/night cycle is "revolutionary."
lol yeah....sigh.
People who have no concept of video game history, so they think anything that they haven't seen before is actually new.
Here's a hint:
NOTHING ANYONE CAN DO IS NEW, JUST DIFFERENT.
Different doesn't mean new. If you take an ipad and bedazzle it it's not a new ipad, it's just different.
There have been probably hundreds of thousands of games that have been released since the 80's. Somewhere, at some time, in some way, a game has already done what any new game might try to do. Just because the DEVELOPERS call it 'new' doesn't mean it is. Maybe they just think it is. Maybe they're just flat out 'massaging the truth' in order to provoke sales.

I have similar feelings about the personal story system. It's been done like gazillion times and Arena.net is like "THIS IS SOOOO NEW AND AWESOME" about it. (Personal Story = Quest Chain/Main story)

Yup, the whole personal story thing sounds a lot like the SWTOR personal story which was flamed so much. GW2s personal story is going to be largely instanced from what I can gather. The exact thing that GW2 fans were flaming SWTOR for a couple of months ago.

It was only flamed because its bad... not for being what it is and yes the perosnal story is instanced because it changes depending on your choices. Others can join you or you can join others to experience each others stories. SWTOR got flamed so bad because its fanbase refused to accept ANY criticism productive or not. I myself was bashed, called a whore and more for calmly explaining why I thought the game was lacking.

You are entitled to your opinion but story telling is the strongest aspect of SWTOR. I was just waiting for this response 'but it was famed because it was bad duh'.
I would love to see your reactions when players flame GW2 personal stories. In one of the articles done by mmorpg.com they already mentioned that personal story telling is nothing special in GW2 and cut scenes with static background mostly distract from the game.
Seeing how this thread is already derailed, I would like to seize the moment to thank fischsemmel and fenistil for their delighting screennames. Those are actually revolutionary.
Let me point out that, in fact, I couldn't care less about these first world problems. I'm just having fun.

Well, being called a "whore" certainly wasn't an appropriate response, but you certainly don't seem to know very much if you are stating that the Swtor personal story was "bad" while believing that the GW2 weirdly instanced backdrop outside-of-the-actual-game-and apropos-to-nothing storyline is going to be good. Maybe ToR didn't offer the kind of choices that everyone likes, and maybe it was very guided, but to say it was "bad" while lauding GW2's story? Kind of ignorant.

Yes, and that can also spawn events.
very nice.
i think it is time to give the mmorpg genre another try with gw2

That is the ONE thing this MMO is revolutionary for? OMG, why did I click this thread?

Hehehe fun thread.
It's obviously not revolutionary, but it's a nice feature and I'm glad it's in the game .

THIS is why we get shit MMOs.
