When will we see a mmorpg with realistic combat ?

I get tired of seeing the same old combat in mmorpgs...unrealistic. Its same old thing, my toon stands there and slashes at an area where the enemy is. The enemy takes damage and dies.

I want to see actual wounds on the enemy. Why cant we see an actual cut across a enemy's chest as my sword slashes him ? Why cant we see blood splatter as I cut his head off ? The combat seems to have changed little since the advent of mmorpgs.

In SWG, I wanted to see combat more like Jedi Academy where I could get saber lock in duels. Most of the time in Galaxies the mob Im fighting doesnt react at all (unless I knock him down) to my blows.

Is it too much to ask for better more realistic combat ? Im guessing it has to do with internet connections and servers able to handle the timing. I say make better servers, require broadband, and make it happen. We get better graphics, sound, complex quests, etc over the years. We should also see improvement in combat.

I don't think he actually meant an arcade fighting-type MMORPG... I just think he means he wants the combat to look more realistic, not complex fighting combos. I completely agree... with the advancement of graphics, the advancement of combat animations and interaction is still at a very low quality in games.

I completely agree, personally I tend to be drawn to games and classes where I can do "other" stuff besides fighting, usually priest class or for example muscian/dancer in SWG but the fighting experience I do have in MMO's seem's so repetitive.

To this day, I do not understand how any major MMO developer can look the at the standard set up, you know the usual suspect with the skill bars and the mana and hp and spells and blah blah blah, and say "Oh yeah, this is great, look how great we are, look at what we've done !!!" and actually take themselves seriously.

I'm not saying theres no market or demand for this classic MMO combat engine but dear god, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM ????

I'd like it to just look more lifelike. Whenever Im in combat in mmorpgs now my toon just swings at the mob but never makes actual contact.

I want to see actual connection when I swing. If I hit, I want to see a cut with blood filling in it happen. I want to see limbs come off. I want to cut off the head in a deathblow or maybe stab it through the heart. If Im unarmed, I wanna see my toon spin around and snap the neck of my enemy.

If I was an archer, Id like to see my arrows pierce the heart or eye, etc.

Or how about if Im a spell caster. I'd like to see my lightning bolts cause burn marks to appear.

I want to see my enemies armor fall apart. Maybe his chest plate splits and falls off when I hammer it leaving him vulnerable.

Basically, I want more than the crummy combat we have now.

Conan or Roma Victor will have great combat it seems.

I don't think having realistic combat like we have in real life would be feasable to have in the game. It's a virtual world man! The closest thing we can get to is, twitch based combat in an mmo.

While I think that would be incredibly cool, no denial there. I must play devils advocate (or design team's advocate in this case) Think for a moment. You're slashing away at monster A, now you slice in and see a bit of blood splatter, and a wound. Well, that all took processing power. Which on some slower machines may have caused lag. But that isn't too much of an issue for most hardcore MMOG players.

The problem lies in the ESRB ratings, which in many states dictate who can be sold games. Now majority of MMOGs are rated Teen, with the advisory that game rating may change while online (because people's language is oft coarse) Now if you add blood into the MMOG, that bumps it to Mature rating, meaning (in most states) it cannot be sold to persons under 17. There goes a good chunk of their player base. Like it or not, a good portion of MMOG gamers are teenagers with parents nice enough to pay 10-15 dollars a month to keep them out of their hair. (about the same price as a good baby sitter for one hour, only with more death.)

So yeah, while it would be nice to see those types of thing, not likely to happen

Not feasable? I completely disagree with that... Adding this kind of thing isn't that hard. We have the technology to do it, it'd just be very difficult and would require very intense servers. Breakthroughs in gaming-related technology are coming all the time... Look at the server technology behind Dark and Light.

Combat like this is definately reachable. Not necessarily easy, but definately reachable.

    Edit to reply to MacKnight:

Those are all good arguments for the time being, but they're all very "present." In the coming years, computers will develop a GREAT deal. Not to mention, the market will increase due to more mainstreaming of MMORPGs like WoW. Your argument against mature MMORPGs are like the same argument about mature video games... people used to say they'd have no audience because most video game players are young kids. That obviously isn't true for today.

I still stand that this is entirely feasable.

Conan, by Funcom, will have limb loss in combat.  You will actually be able to cut the limbs off your enemy.

Planetside doesn't have realistic combat as he was stating it.  I love playing Planetside, but I don't see any blood or wounds.

I'm just saying you're not likely to see it for at least a couple years, espically since rating policing will be on high for a while since the whole GTA: SA issue. Not to mention that roughly 15% of the current MMOG population are Teenagers, that's a sizeable chunk that has the possiblity of parents taking the card due to rating. (they'd do it too, I've seen em)

The gta issue. That was so fucking stupid. I think ppl like hillary clinton ought to be shot, trying to restrict our damn rights. If I want to play a game with blood and gore and friggin midget clown strippers, that's my goddamn right (lol). If you don't want some little kid playing it, then RAISE THEM RIGHT YOU LAZY ASS PARENTS, YOU PATHETIC PIECES OF SHIT CAN'T EVEN GET YOUR CHILDREN TO OBEY, IT'S CALLED A FUCKING BACKHAND DUMBASS!

And then banning the CONSOLE version because you can do something in the PC version only. And you can mod ANY pc game (besides maybe mmos). Hell, I could turn a movie-game of the carebears into a porno if i wanted to. Do lawmakers know nothing about computers? It's not their fcking right to say what we can play and what we can't anyway. I swear, if this shit goes much further some justices are going to need to meet my little friend (insert mafiosa voice).

But the GTA thing is the perfect example that rating a game mature doesn't lose your young audience. Every little kiddy with a console in america has the gta games. I'd say being M rated actually raises their young audience. I mean, their parents don't care (until they see reason for a lawsuit, lol!) and the kids want it more since it's M rated.

Oh, and RV promises exactly what you're asking. Realistic fps combat, realistic speed and health (lowest of low players can walk up to a super high level player and slide a knife into the back of his neck and kill him). There is actually no 'health' system, just wounds. Bad enough wounds, or enough minor ones, will take you out. You get notified of your wounds, and i imagine you'll be able to examine yourself somehow to see your wound status, but there's no health meter telling you how much life you have left. Wounds realistically impair you (a wound to the arms will make you less dextrous with your weapon). Shields and armor aren't blanked protection, if you aim for a gap in the armor and hit it (your skills such as accuracy come into play here) you will get the hit despite the amor. There's no box that pops up liek in neocron, it's pure aiming (tho since there will be no crosshair, to make it more realistic, it'll be tough :))

Supposedly wounds will show on the body, and wounds and dirtiness and stuff will even affect how NPCs treat you. The state of the graphics right now would at face argue against such advanced features, but then again the devs have stated right form the start that their priority is to get all of the features in and working and THEN work on the graphics, not the other way around like most mmos do (to produce glitz shots to attract fans).

RV SHOULD be the dream come true for everyone who doesn't like traditional mmo combat, or overpowered skill effects, or just wants realism in a persistant world (hell, you can even become emperor :)). It remains to be seen if they can pull off the huge feats they have promised, but tbh even tho i have fluxing doubts, i have huge faith in that team for some reason. They're good dudes.

EDIT: And how can you use DnL as your number one example of revolutions in game design? You, good sir, must have never heard of spore :)
