Depends on what sort of setting you like. But I would say take a look at Eve Online. And if you never played MMORPGs I would say try out World of Warcraft.
There isn't a perfect game out there and will never be, but there are some good games out there and there will be more good games out there. And everyone has his own taste and the best is to try it out for yourself. We can only give you pointers when we know what taste you have

Alright , This might be a long reply but it might help you...
Judging From the fact that you want to fall back from fps , i'm going on the idea that you're not really informed as some of us forum mebers about mmorpg's... Mmorpg's really aren't a game to fall back on... like play it when you're bored... because you're forking out 15-20 Bucks a month depending on what you choose.
Anyways... I'm actually trying to be really nice, and i'm sorry if i offend you in any way.. i'm just giving my outlook...
If you are interested in an MMO, you have to consider a few thigns... have you thought about Dungeon siege or NORMAL Rpg games... Because those games are free montly, and some you can go online... As with diablo, Now... What i'm trying to say is if you're just looking for a game to fall back on.. i'd be careful... Because you dont want to fall back on everquest 2 or WoW and end up realizing you're wasting money playing 3 times a week... an mmo is not the average video game... I try to look at it that way.. i also play it that way... some people play really hard core and get to the highest level in about 3 week heh...
Now... Consider this...
MMO's Take time...
Notice the person who replied first to your post... His xfire says he's been playing World Of Warcraft for 900+ Hours *Good job By the way*
if you even want to experince a huge truck load of super fun funtasticular fun ness. You have to spend a lot of time doing quests for people and leveling up by killing creatures outside of places... Some people tend to dedicate most of their lives "Excluding Family,Friends, Work, School" If you're just a gamer and are getting bored of your fps games like counter-strike / battlefield which i'm sure we ALL play... You might just be looking for another game... Which in that case i would consider games like star craft , warcraft, homeworld, Dungeon siege, diablo, Things like that...
Now... Also read this...
I'm not trying to tell you to NOT PLAY MMOS EVER n00bZOR... What i'm simply trying to get across is that... If you're just a gamer who is a simple person trying to get thorugh his gaming phase, i wouldn't go right for mmo... because they are costly, fun, yet.. time consuming...
Now... one other thing
From what i said earlier i took the idea that you have not too much knowledge of the world of MMO's now... You may have a lot of knowledge... And if you know what mmorpg games are.. then i'm sorry for writing this... I'm just looking out for you and others by letting them know what these games are about and how they work... now...
If you are still considering an MMO *** Now its my good side ***
If i still consider the fact that you're just looking for a game to fall back on... almost ANY game will work, honestly, Dark age of camelot, Everquest 2 , World of warcraft, Star wars galaxies, You name it...
now... Heres a cool suggestion...
Since it seems your just looking for more games to play... Why not try this... Instead of picking World of warcraft or somethign and paying 15/month Why not get the
Station All Access pass This pass lets you play
Star Wars Galaxies - Fun game for the Die-Hard Star wars fan. Things could use a little work but graphics are stunning, Gameplay is moderate, can be extremely fun if you put your mind to it.
Everquest 2 - A Nother great game for the Die-Hard Fantasy fan. Great fun, AMAZING Graphics, And Stunning Adventure, I'm still not bored and i have a level 50 paladin, Plus with the station access pass you get all the adventure + MORE! : For free it adds on the 2 adventure packs *As you can see i'm an EQ2 Fan *
Planetside - Now.. This is one reason i suggested the access pass... if you play FPS , which i'm sur eyou do... you'll love this game, it's just like an fps , but... In stead of many servers. theres 3... which hold up to 3000 people *I belive* Which can induce major all-nighters and extreme pvp / fun / good time with friends
Everquest 1 - This game is a funky one to look into if you come from the new age of MMOrpgs, this game kind of started them all , Next to ultima online. a lot of games base their material and gameplay on Eq1 , and UO
Overall Conclusion - This may have helped you, this may have angered you, either or, i did what i chose to do and that was inform...
I hope you take this into good reference. Note to all mmorpg players... I'm not trying to rip another person away from mmo's and trying to boycott mmos i'm just looking out for someone who might make the wrong decision in his gaming life...

play runescape. its free if ur not a member, and only $5 a month if u r.it has lots of abilities u can work on,trading(money & stuff) and quests and stuff like that.
If you consider yourself to be an experienced MMO player, then perhaps you should try Eve On-line. Slower, less candy at the beginning of the game, but with depth and complexity to hold a veteran for a long time.
If you are still relatively new to the genre, WOW or EQ2 should do it. WOW is the most fun I think. EQ1 is a good game but not so new. FYI
