@ 59:51 " We don't need to make EVE something it's not. EVE is hard. Its a hardcore game for hardcore? gamers. We are not going to apologize for the games difficulty."
This is how all mmo devs should be.

I agree also. For a game like EVE, it has to be serious.
What makes this game hard? It has a learning curve, but that's knowledge not skill. Most of what's described in Eve as hard is actually just tedious.
PS - please just stop using the term hardcore for anything done in a videogame. Nothing is ever hardcore in a videogame... the fact that you're spending a lot of time playing a videogame means that you're more than likely not hardcore.
Either tedious or rediculously time consuming.
If the game is so hardcore and aimed at hardcore gamers, why did they feel the need to add the new player hand holding, suger coated tutorial?
A creative person is motivated by the desire to achieve, not the desire to beat others.
Pretty much this.
One would say that CCP has already grown up from "rough kid" attitude but there seem to be some regression in past years/months and people have already responded to such attitude with their wallets.
Being arrogant about losing subscribers and pushing it even further is not going to get them anywhere...in the same spirit, bending to (incompetent) CSM will not get them anywhere either.
Ive been wathcing bits of this and I have to say, it was a very professional setup, and the speaker was very clear about every topic, I didnt hear stutter at all.
Makes me want to try and play this game.

Because CCP can design a game while you seem completely clueless about it. Which makes me wonder, why isn't CCP here criticizing you?
Lighten up man. The term is being used relative to a videogame not life in general.
There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.

Even with the tutorial the game still has a lot of stuff to teach you afterwards and you would be wise to pay attention.
This is not a game.
Yet the devs have been making EVE more accessible to the causal crowd.
Goto love the pr bs.
If they have a dedicated customer base for their "hardcore" ways then yes but if they do not then it is just foolish stubordness.
My gaming blog
They have had that base for years, thats why when we rabblerouse about microtransactions and WOW in space they run in abject fear and quickly reiterate their loyalty to the hardcore vision of EvE.
Still, it does not seem to work as Crucible did not bring more subs in...
Of course they have, if people don't "get it" at the beginning, they won't stick around long enough to really appreciate the game's depth.
Many a poster here has said it took 3 or 4 trials to finally understand it, therefore obviously there still needs to be some work done to help people ease into the game.
But at it's core, they haven't changed much, there are few other MMO's who can claim their Developers stayed close to the original vision over the years, and like they say in the video, they don't apologize for being harsh, hardcore, challenging, or even, yes, tedious to some people.
Eve is what it is, love it, hate it, CCP doesn't plan to signicantly change the core gameplay just to satisfy those who wish for a less complex game.

And yet my alliance just celebrated its 5th year and I do anticipate it will still be here 5 years from now. That is just how persistent the world CCP created feels.
Yep yep, +1 here
I think I've come to the conclusion that a nerd sitting at a computer playing an online game and the term "hardcore" is a bit like oil and water. The Navy Seals are hardcore. A nerd playing EvE is just a nerd.

haha shhh you'll shatter the illusion!!

Not an Eve player but yeah can't agree more. Soon to be a Dust 514 player though!

5 years? thats nothing .. serious..there wow guilds oder then that, UO guilds that are 10 years old. a guild age says nothing about the quality of a game, only how mutch pink the guild members wear (glasses)
EvE destiny is to fade away into the background and run just for the die-hard fanbase it got now, when CCP's other MMO hits the market in 2014 EvE will be put down on livesupport (or so my predictions go) since the game can no longer grow whit the shallow gameplay experience. ( ships ships ships ships..were it could have bin, character, ships, worlds, ships, stations, gambling, dust, characters EvE-Univerce-live-simulation instead of ship-sim)
Played Eve for years, always looked forward to path the devs had taken untill the anti-gameplay-expansion cry's , that moment EvE lost all its potentional gameplay in favor of same old Excel sheet ship blipblubshit.
How does this answer his question? How IS the game so hardcore yet they add the new player stuff that is so...er... not hardcore?
And also, we are talking about video games, hardcore? GAMES, dummies, games.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
well spoken
I dunno about WOW and UO guilds but 5 years, 3000 members, consistently being able to form up 300 members in any given timezone for large scale PvP seems pretty decent to me. I'm not talking about a dozen guys doing raids for 5 years, I'm talking about a large organization that consistently keeps huge numbers of its members engaged in the game (although admittedly thru pvp only).
I would say that people have been saying EvE's destiny is to fade away for many many years now and yet the two years I've been playing the concurrent users on the server has only gone up. In Jan 2010 I remember seeing 30k+ users at peak times. Now its 50k+ at peak times, the alliance I'm in was formed when peak users were way below 30k so overall I say the trend is going up. Sure many new players shy away and some old players get bitter but enough new guys(starting in 2010 makes me relatively new) like me pick it up (thru my second attempt no less) and just run with it.
