In our recent journey into Guild Wars 2, we traveled through three of the major cities. In this video travelogue, we take a look at the Norn city of Hoelbrak.

I must ask what resolution David was playing that at and what the settings were set to? (as well as the fraps settings, half size or full size makes a huge difference)

It's better than the last video for sure but still it feels lacking a lot. It might be because Anti Aliasing is clearly not turned on and those jaggies stand out like a sore thumb for me but with the UI there it feels really tight and claustrophobic.

Someone in the last video linked another city guide that was very well done and I will repost it here simply for comparison. Turning off the UI when showing things off goes a long way to increasing the immersion, If you wanna show crafting stations and stuff off then do it in a seperate video imo.

This is painful to watch, I'm sorry. :/ It just seems like a poorly done youtube video.

Thanks for the sneak preview though regardless.

I probably won't play as a Norn but the city is very nice. I love how the central prism projects the totem spirits onto the clouds above.... and the giant ice statues of the totem spirits too. Has a very Norn feel about the place.

Cant wait to check out the Sylvari and Asura towns.

Thanks for the video. I think I wanna play the Salvary tho :-)

I checked out that linked video and you're right man, it is way better in quality and clarity. MMORPG should look at these videos as well as far as for video quality goes. Thanks for the link I wanna start out as human now lol.

David's videos, it would seem, are as dull as his articles.

...my god this man is about as interesting as watching grass grow...  I can't wait for the game, but jumping Jesus whoever did this review either has no mental capcity for anything beyond being a Senate speaker or is on enough anti-depressants to kill a Rhino.

Its no different than any other mmo.. 90% of NPC just stand there. When you get to play 1st hand you find the graphics seem dated.. but for free not bad..

People on this site are just damn rude. Yeah, it's not the best video in the world but being rude and insulting is far worse than making a below par video.

If the guy who makes these is getting paid for it then, sure, he should probably work on his technique a little and plan it out before doing it. If he isn't geting paid then more power to him, thanks for taking the time to do something you don't have to.

Yet again you guys prove that almost none of you can make good videos.  I used to hate pockets voice before i started listening to the rest of the people at MMORPG. David North writes great articles but stick to the articles David your not very well spoken.

On the topic of the video this city was no where near as DETAILED as the other two starter cities.

Not exactly game specific, but just general video of recording tips. My tip would be to test your recording first, and if it's good then go ahead and record 10-20 mins of footage.

After all, you're competing for an A.D.D. generation audience's attention in an over saturated marked. At all costs you MUST put your best foot forward, or else the internet's rage will rain down upon you.

I like big bustling cities in a game. The kind where people hang out for reasons other than questing. They make the game come alive. I wonder if the weather will ever be a changing thing?

Ballerinas are always on their toes. Why don't they just get taller ballerinas?

I agree that people here are a bit rude, but they do have a point. After seeing Totalbiscuit running around Hoelbrak and the norn starting zones this wasn't very impressive.

Of course part of that is because TB is a bit of a weirdo ina good way, but he also gets his vidoes with a lot higher quality So I think Dave could learn a bit on how to make vids from him.

On the other hand is this about as good as those Yogcast videos and I seen worse as well.

Good question actually. I know that it does outside towns but havn´t heard of anything inside.

It wouldn't surprise me if it will be same except on holiday events since I seen the same in all vids but anything is possible.

He's doing a pretty good job at showing the entire thing, actually. You guys are just too much used to overly hyped up voices shouting how cool everything is. I prefer this laid back commenting. Also I think Hoelbrak is the least impressive city so far. That didn't help much either.

It's mainly the graphics of the game that disappoints me in this town: there might be detail to distinctive objects and crafting stations but the main structure (like walls and floors) of the city is pretty bland. You can still count the polygons. I noticed this in other vids too. Character's animation and clothing didn't help either. Some lag still too.

Better recording quality and maybe higher graphics settings might have helped, but still ... it's essentially Open Air Ironforge 2.0

I am much more impressed with the human and Charr cities so far.

I missed most of the video becuase the narrators voice put me to sleep.

I agree that mmorpg's staff still has a lot to learn when it comes to video making but they are slowly improving imo.

I liked it very much and anytime I can get anything Norn related I will invariably like more since that is the race I intend to play almost exclusively.

    That running animation was horrid

  • someforumguysomeforumguy Member RarePosts: 4,088

It was ok I guess if you are just interested in seeing the city. It was not as bad as the charr city vid anyway, that one was just useless because of the low quality. Video presentation is not easy. Some ppl just lack the voice for it maybe.

Halfway I switched to a different Hoelbrak vid that was shown on the rightside:p  That one was much higher quality and this made all the difference for my impression about the graphics and the city. Though the vid quality was a lot higher and the narrator had an clear and interesting voice, half the time he was talking out of his ass lol. It was incredible how many simple facts he got wrong. In that aspect David North did it way better.

i love almost everthing about this game. with so much detail in this game i think they should change how the health bubble looks. It looks bland and originally. some other games they made it look like a potion bottle thats scruffed up and been used. Just give the bubble more detail. With that they should give the UI a more guild wars 2 look. That older used look and not the neat squares that look like they shouldnt be there
