Lets discuss the ELementalist

Lord.BachusLord.Bachus Member RarePosts: 9,686

THe Elementalist seems like a very very versatile class, but..

WIll they allways be glass canons? Or can i build them as defensive as a Necro by suffering DPS?

The can summon some nice mellee weapons, but will they themselves be able to wield them efficiently?

They wear cloth armor, but do they have to wear those stupid robes in structured PvP? and how about PvE, will there be a lot nonrobe clothgear for clothcasters?

People are talking about Elementalist pets, but it seems they are only temporary pets? are they summon and forget?

Anyone toyed around with the character builder tools and found some nice things about the Ele?

Can you link the tools again?

As I understand it the Earth attunement can offer quite a bit of defensive prowess.

I also believe every profession has the capability to be glass cannons, or defensive/stalwart, or balanced.

I'd imagine even though that is supposedly true there has to be SOME difference between say a Defensive Elementalist and a Defensive Guardian.

I haven't played around much with the skill builder, but from some of the footage we've seen - especially in PvP - earth attuned elementalists are pretty much unkillable. I'd be interested to see someone play a mixed Water/Earth ele in PvP.....

I havent toyed around with the ele much yet.

I am looking forward to the videos showing a staff weilding Ele single handedly defending a keep from a mass zerg.  Thats a bit exaggerated, but from what I have seen, its not out of the question.

I dont know too much about the gw2 ele but in gw1 the earth attunement would be the "defensive" attunement and still be a force to be reckoned with.

Yeah, I would guess something similar exist in GW2 but even then don't expect to be as tough as a warrior or guardian...

I made a spec in the beta very durable, with very good damage.

    I went 30 air 30 earth 10 arcane, scepter + focus.

Got invulnerability +armor and remove conditions, with a lots of damage from Hurl rock in earth attunement

I tought GW2 elementalist was all about switching atunements (stance dancing) So i was hoping that there where armor and traits options to make it even more durable.

Somehow i tought the NEcromancer was the most durable class, if specced right.

It feels like you'll be focusing on mainly 2 of the attunements, while trying to keep auras and buffs from the non specced attunements up

Earth attunement makes for a very durable Elementalist, and also provides additional defences to team members. It's another example of GW2's proactive approach damage control, rather than tanking in the traditional sense.

Seems like Cepter+Focus on the following would be about as defensive as I could make it-

Again, based soley on what the descriptions are and such.

Scepter/focus in Earth attunement seems to be the defensive weapon set.

Staff in Water attunement seems to be the healer set.

I suppose if you were to focus your traits in toughnes and healing with a few things to back those two weapon sets up you could make a pretty durable stance dancer with some healing.

Edit: Oh wait, no weapon switching for Elementalist. My bad.

I don't believe it would be a dmg sponge like those two, its defence lies in evasion and debilitating the offensive abilities of the enemy.

I really had no interest in playing an Elementalist but after playing around with different builds on that tool I kept thinking to myself "damn, this sounds/looks like it would be a hell of a lot of fun!"

I seem to have this "problem" every time I play with the build tools...

    A good sign, imo

Have you played with engineer yet? It's nuts.

Ah, elementalists. They'll always be a hot topic. The few I met that were more down to earth tended to be a bit tougher as well, and those that kept a cool head tended to have a positive influence on their friends... attacking them was always a slippery slope however. I found the airheads hard to keep up with and they tend to be blowhards anyhow.

    Oderint, dum metuant.

A very good sign indeed, so much diversity between the classes.

I came up with something comparable.  And it somehow seems very sturdy, but i guess we´ll not know for sure untill we have a lot more handson experience.

I dislike the fact that engineers are only ranged combat, on top of that i am much more arcanist then technollogy fan, as i work with technollogy all day in real life.

Do you have any video links of earth elementalist? I have been trying to find some videos of earht elementalist gameplay but I have not seen anything. Earth elementalists  are the only class that can have the protection buff (-33% damage taken) on the majority of the time. I am going to try a crit/debuff build with my elementalist so fire/earth (long high dmg coonditions) or earth/arcane (multiple random high dmg coonditions).

There is no such thing as an Earth elementalist, every Elementalist will have to use all 4 elements in their strategy...

personaly i am getting more and more enthousiast about the dagger-dagger build, its build for very fast mellee action and  has lots and lots of defense too.
