    Me too.

I started on the Isle a couple of times but never made it past level 2-3. It just didn't grab me. But there will be more people around after f2p and I heard the other starter areas are better.

There is some debate about where the best place to start is. The Isle of Dawn is easily digestible and linear but has better gear at the end. The other starter areas vary, but in general they're more flavorful and give a better picture of the open-ended feel of Vanguard. The gear is not as good, but with the exception of the diplomacy trinket you'll have most of it replaced by the mid-teens anyway. And the diplo trinket can be had by any charcter of at laest level 10 right now, by visiting a Herald of Telon located outside several of the major cities.

Personally, I prefer the old starter areas.

The quality of the old starting areas is pretty variable. Some are fantastic (raki / wood elf) and some are boring and involve too much running back and forth (goblin / orc). For some races the Isle of Dawn is far superior, but others will get a richer experience from their home town.

Martok is a great starting area and far from boring,as for running back and forth, you get a mount at level 10?

There is more to it than that. Even after SoE came in and optimised the client as well as they could, its still not up to scratch in terms of polish for a AAA title, which makes it hard for people to justify a monthly fee.

There is no denying that the game world is deep and fun (if you group with friends), but the quality is still lacking compared to other titles. SoE was working towards polishing it, but after the failure of the Isle of Dawn relaunch it became clear that they were just flushing money down the toilet.

SoE has claimed that they will try to further optimise the client and squash bugs for F2P, so I hope it goes well and that the F2P is profitable so that the game becomes worth developer attention in the future.

I have played every single races starting area and Martok was by far the most boring. The Isle was far superior.

You can definitely solo all the way to max level, but I will admit that there is a bit of a slump in the mid 20s if you exclusively solo. Generally I have to grind a few levels with no quests before I can get to the hidden valley or the ward of the moon. You are much better off grouping once you hit level 20.

I played Vanguard for launch and I enjoyed it despite the bugs.  Falling through the world was common and pretty annoying.  There were tons of other bugs at launch including untargetable pets and a paladin skill that could instakill any player with one shot, it was easily the buggiest mmorpg launch I ever played.  When people complained during AoC's launch I thought it was perfectly fine coming from Vanguard.  The problem with Vanguard was that Brad McQuaid didn't give his programmers the proper coding software and ignored requests they made from him.  I think it was a situation where Sigil spent all their time developing promotional content and didn't have much of a game and basically tricked SOE into getting on board.

The actual game design of Vanguard was really good.  Good enough for me to keep playing despite the state of the game.  All of the classes had really fun and creative skills.  The crafting took the form of a puzzle game that I quite enjoyed, I even was able to level my crafting up to the point of being able to make ships, and sail around on the water.  The graphics in Vanguard were excellent at the time it came out and they still stack up very well.  Much better graphics than a certain new star wars game for instance.  The thing I enjoyed most though was the FFA PVP + gold looting.  The classes certainly weren't balanced well toward pvp, but every class had some powerful skills.  I kind of had the feeling that everyone was overpowered in pvp.  My favorite memory of Vanguard is the suicide runs through New Targenor.  To travel between continents you had to go through this city and it was always full of Pkers.  Sometimes I would gank players there as well, was lots of fun.

The eventually quit when people started using gold duping exploits and Sigil did nothing about it.  It completely devalued and was kind of a final straw.  PVP got a lot less fun as people started to leave en masse.  Having FFA pvp in a completely uninstanced world was incredibly fun, but only if it is heavily populated.  I resubbed a couple times since and the bug issues appear to have been dealt with.  However, they did end up removing the FFA PVP server, and I will not play a game without FFA world pvp.  I remember it fondly, but unless they bring back the FFA server I won't be back.

Yes and i have played every single races area and i don't think Martok was boring,i found Tursh to be more boring.Perhaps it because no one ever really goes to Martok, the area is and always has been a bit empty.

This game seemed great till it was released and my wife and I bought our two copies and sat down to play. It was totally unplayable for us. We gave it a few months and I tried again and still on a top end computer (at the time) it was horrid!

We left and have not looked back.

For a long time there was just too many great MMO's coming out to bother with one that had already stolen our hard earned money for not only the cost of the two games but later on a months sub. All for less than being able to play it for 5 minutes total.

However with the MMO market heading down the Theampark road and the Empty feeling we get playing SWTOR(love the game but will admite to feeling too much like a mouse going down too many preset  pathwats and not open at all) we are starting to look at older games again.

Now all that aside,We are stickly PVE folks and Van has always SOUNDED like the perfect game for us.  The lack of end game raiding ect doesn't matter to us as the trip to end game is the fun part for us.

The more I read about Van makes me want to give it a try again but come on...How many times am I going to give those folks my cash before I learn my lesson?

Just not sure I am willing to take that risk yet again.

I am truly loving this game 100% for its adventure pve. From the sounds of open world shouting there is end game raiding but i a newb at this game. I have been playing 2 weeks and it feels like the largest mmorpg maps ive seen in a long time. I hope this gem of a game gets a huge spike in attention from going f2p. Im very happy SOE didnt just drop the game cause now i can live the adventure!

I too hope the F2P model works - however I fear it's success somewhat depends on the release timing of GW2. If the releases are somewhat close, I fear many people like myself will be too busy with GW2 to give Vanguard a chance.

That said, I truly HOPE for the best since I personally loved playing a Disciple awhile back. I'm introducting my gf to a lot of MMO's I once played, and this is one I'd like her to at least sample.

  • helthroshelthros Member UncommonPosts: 1,449

I played Vanguard through twice. I think their rendition of the thief class is the best I've seen to date. Their disciple and monk classes are an absolute blast for any melee lover. I typically hate healers, but the disciple is a complete blast to play. All of the classes in that game seem like they would be fun to play.

Having said that - I think people will soon realize why open world dungeons are a horrible idea and why instances are a good thing.

My take on Vanguard was the game was developed by the same people that made EQ. When Vanguard came out, it left allot of people scratching their heads as to why a new game and not concentrate on improving EQ?

Vanguard going F2p may be a good thing, but it may be trying one more time to raise a dead horse.  I did like the multitude of characters to play. Graphics need improvement as they show a very dated game.

    We'll see what happens.

I like the Orc and Goblin starting area a lot. It's true that it contains a lot of running around, but it's hardly the only starter area where that's true... and in Vanguard, where there is real value in exploration, that's a virtue whose presence might not be instantly apparent.

the grapics in vangaurd are fine, better then alot of current date mmog's  problem is the client stability/ preformance. I cant turn the game full gfx whitout mayor fps and responce dropping even tho I got a modern good system that plays current date games whitout any issue's.

Then again, some folks are more sencitive to fancy grapics over gameplay then others.

Vanguards launch was a train wreck, I remember after turning the gfx to the lowest setting (had a medium-high spec rig back then) I rolling a ranger and LMAO I started with a dagger and not a bow.

I tried it again about a year ago and looks really good but I had other stuff I was playing - I'll check it out when it goes F2P.

Ahhh yes the never ending Vanguard posts. They just keep coming dont they. Year in year out. It's not that popular because it simply isn't that great. It's just an ok game that has a big open static world to wander around in. There are more interesting (and more modern) games to play......and most people are playing them instead of Vanguard. End of story

Np,go and enjoy your other games,it really isnt a big deal for us.Perhaps you don't know but the main reason why their have been many more Vanguard post is because it goes FTP this summer and the devs are finally working on the game again.

You really don't need to answer this post because you wont be playing and why should it matter to you.

You will answer though because you wont be able to help yourself.I know, you are going to tell us your opinions on Vanguard going FTP and how it wont matter, the game is dead, right?

Don't bother i saved you the trouble and said it for you.image

LoL True, since its not your generic wow-like themepark mmo thats about all thats been coming out since wow's success. Wow-tards need not apply you'll prob dislike vanguard since it doesn't have insta-gratification or stuff handed to you for no effort.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

I never said I hated the game. I said it is ok but it's not great. When it goes FTP it will be worth a look. I might download it again and have a doodle around with it until I get bored with it again. I expect more people will play it then as well. Currently though for most people it just isnt worth it

ps. Fixing those ugly character models would certainly make it more appealing for me

Many people are excited about the future F2P, regardless if you feel it's a horrible game.

If you question any of this, just ask yourself...why has a thread about Vanguard suddenly become about you? "Because you feel like it."

I was quite in love when I first read about Vanguard.  I thought finally, the MMO for me was coming.  Then it came and we all know how that went.

I never even tried it because of all the people warning me against it.  I may give it a try now, but I'm not sure why.  Mostly, I'm worried the combat will bore me greatly and it will feel like a grindfest.  I could be totally wrong, but with Guild Wars 2 looking as great as it does, I think most of my time will be spent in Tyria.

If Vanguard were updated with many of the designs seen in GW2 so it doesn't feel like one of the older MMO's, I'd sub to it.

Mostly, I love the amazing sense of freedom Vanguard seemed to offer... but it just feels really outdated now, sadly.

    image

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
