I wouldnt mind coming back to EQ, it popped my cherry so to speak but just from reading its like a year long grind just getting into the game to be able to play it... not only do you have to level to 90 or 95 or whatever it is now, but if you want to tank/heal current content you also have to grind like 2 to 3k aa just to compete with a mercenary, then you also have to go on endless evercamps to get all the augments for your gear, then get your discs/auras/spells...
I hate to say it but no drop was the worst thing they did to everquest, I miss the good old days when you sat in EC tunnel selling your wares, or buying other peoples stuff. Now adays only the crap gear seems sellable, everything else you must camp for yourself in person for days. I also miss the days where you could tell what people had by just looking at them instead of every armor looking the same... the dresses now are the only things with style... in velious I remember getting all the rygor armor I could for my ranger because it looked so much better than the other alternatives, black iron was actually black chain, the ranger quest armor was dark green, fear armor was green plate looking... and damn that helm of the tracker from growth looked nice...
I guess really just too many years have gone by, and I just dont want to make the time investment to get back into the game and get to a playable level again....

If SOE really wants to encourage people to play and stay then they should do something radical like allowing silver+ accounts the option to "birth" new characters at L70 with 100AA . Charge a one time fee of $30 per character. Spawn new L70 characters with a few basic spells and grant pure melee one leveled weapon skill ability - maybe a ranger might spawn with 1hs / double attack maxed /triple attack at 50% with nearly maxed def skills then see what happens. Whats to lose? Vet players can whine all they want but the game will still die and then what will they do
Or get rid of defiant. Modernize and update old armor stats, increase drops rates and grant exp bonuses in all zones up to, but not including, the last two current expansions.
My shaman is almost L60/120AA and i'm left to wonder if I can make it to 85 without being bored to tears first. My duo partner is pretty much in agrrement with that sentiment as well.

I'm very similar to you. I miss those things as well. And I've come back since it went F2P. I have a level 21 necro and a level 16 druid. So far, I'm having a blast. I'm currently re-discovering places I went to long ago. And it's still fun. Unlike the bulk of the MMO's I've played though, I feel no desire to level fast. I'm taking my time and exploring again. I don't care what other people are doing in the game. I'm doing what I want to. And I'm taking my time doing it.
My brother has come back with me and we're having a great time.
It's not about fighting, it's about balance. It's not about enlightenment, it's about balance. It's not about balance.
http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/9/view/forums/thread/340763/New-Progression-Guild-032012.html
We started the guild on the 3/1/12.
It is a progression guild, but not on a progression server, so we control the time frames. We raid now a few times a week, it is relatively casual. We have many lvl 51s (our set max level currently).
We have a few people still joining. Typically it is very easy to get to level 34 or so (following the guild rules). At 34 you will easily be able to level with the level 51s of the guild.
We are looking for all classes still. Many lvl 51s will buff you when they see you. When we raid there are typically only a few people boxing. Boxes cannot get loot over a main.
The game is not the same as before but it can still be very fun. We have some very casual players still leveling up and some hardcore players who are maxed out on lvl 51 aa's and cannot earn any more aa's.
Because we are doing progression, you will not have to take very long to catch up. I know for myself doing 2 characters at a time, it took me about 3-5days or so to get to 51 (thats not playing non-stop).
If you are still trying to play EQ you should check us out... I am not an officer but have had a great time raiding early content and leveling up with new people... it is not the same as original EQ, but it is still very fun and much better than anything else out right now.
I was a raider up to POP and then dropped back to being a heavy player through LDON, I used to run lead pugs through BOT towers every day, and ran lots and lots of LDON's back before kunark I ran pug fear raids once a month even, thus comes my issue... I want to run groups, I want actual dungeons, I want to pull for groups, yes I could take my time and smell the roses so to speak, or limit myself to content that I ran for a LONG time but I would rather start actually grouping again, not just molo my way up eventually finding friends to play with...
65 mage, 65 cleric, 65 beast, 65 necro, 65 ranger, 65 shaman, 65 monk, 65 sk, 65 bard, 65 rogue... they were all on emarr but I mistakenly moved them to FV and now wish I had not, so if I do decide to play might go to one of the actual progression servers and work my way up again, or might go back to my original home on emarr.... (BTW I started in eq the day the patch was going on to remove rubicite from CT... sucked to install the game and server was down for a patch lol... first mmo and said bump this and tried to return it because I couldnt play)
Play and have fun maybe? I am not going back, but you guys seem to just want to make EQ, not EQ?
So in a couple weeks you want to be on par with someone that has been putting in years of work?
You want to skip all content that you are geared and leveled for?
Thats fine, but I think you are missing what EQ is, and are too use to the current mmos, and have the max endgame now attitude.
I am sure their are guilds that are newer or lower raiding guilds, you could join and progress with, and if you surpass what they can offer, you could move on to another challenge and higher end guild.
If you go into it, eyeing where you 'need' to be, you probably shouldn't pick a game like EQ up, even if it is again.
Even the progression servers have been out for some time now that doing what you want is limited.
I know Progression X guild has many groups doing EQ classic content to farm gear, xp and aa's. I personally usually run 4 chars, but always drop my boxes for actual players that wish to tag along.
Not many people would agree with you. I'd say anywhere from three to five million, including me.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
you guys missed what I was trying to say, or I just was not clear... I dont want to skip all the stuff, I just dont feel like putting in a years work to catch up to where all the long time players are at..., there are too many games coming out to dedicate myself to getting playable in EQ again, and I dont want to solo/molo... KC wall groups for 18 hours straight were what was fun, breaking into a camp in lower guk, or OS and holding it for far to many hours... thats what I would like to get back into. Original EQ up to LDON you leveled alone maybe to level 5 then you grouped up from then on, unless you were a necromancer. Grouping is what made the game, going to unrest after bronze armor, going to blackburrow for those str neck pieces and so on....
Alas even if you caught up to everyone else in the game now you would not find that.... everything is private instances with lock out timers just like every other game out now... there is no camp checking anymore, there is no zone where everyone goes to grind out some levels.... there is no persistant dungeon with the best loot that you are camping and holding out the camp so you can get that phat loot... and even if it drops now, its most likely no drop anyway so not worth camping in the first place...
edit just to add, I like to wax nostalgic on what everquest was, but unfortunately everquest isnt even everquest anymore... if I took a player that started after POP and said how do you get from felwithe to qeynos without using the books I doubt they could do it.., and I could just about do it with my eyes closed 8(
corpse runs... whats that, grouping? why just get up your box and your mercs and do what you want... why rely on someone else...
dungeon crawls?... nah lets fire up this instance and just rush right over here and incoming 4 mobs then a named after that, 4 more mobs next named, 4 more mobs next named ok just a sec.... /1 selling task add to ***** 20k 3 spots available..... ok 4 more mobs and last boss collect currency and faction and exp... meet me in lobby to pay the 20k....
why would I want to play for a year to get up to that??
hate to break it to you but EQ I think topped out like 500k players back in the day... dont think it ever hit 1 mill... was like 3 to 5k per server from what I remember.. they used to actually show how many people were on each server and back then was no where near even 1 million... since that time they have merged and gotten rid of servers what 2 times.... if there were 250k before it went F2P I would be shocked, if it was 1 mill now after f2p I would be really shocked.
If they had 3 to 5 million it wouldnt be free to play now, it would be beating out even star wars the old republic which I think has sold like 2 million now?.... just checked it as of 2/17/12 1.6million players for swtor
http://www.statisticbrain.com/star-wars-the-old-republic-statistics/
and notice that for 1.6 million they have 145 servers to support them with a highly highly instanced world (everything is instanced in swtor, where in eq only dungeons seem to be instanced...
in fact after doing more research from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EverQuest "Sony's last reported subscription numbers were given as "more than 430,000 players" on 14 January 2004." so not even 500k at that time and World of Warcraft was released on November 23, 2004, which really ate into eq subscription base.
Play and have fun maybe? I am not going back, but you guys seem to just want to make EQ, not EQ.

Did you even bother reading what the man typed? I don't think so. You people seem to inject whatever narrative that suits you at the moment.

65 mage, 65 cleric, 65 beast, 65 necro, 65 ranger, 65 shaman, 65 monk, 65 sk, 65 bard, 65 rogue... they were all on emarr
Looks like you're wrong again, this guy was a serious player and earned his chops. Did you max level this many character back in the day?
.

Ah, the vieled WoW Bnet kiddy insult. Grats, that was unexpected.

Good advice is hard to come by. We can hold off on labeling him a guild-hopper until the time is ripe.

And its possible you simply enjoy "tut-tutting" and"lecturing" and "fingerwagging". Scare-quotes, what can't they do?
they did a thing on massively.com saying they topped out at 700k before the decline. i imagine theve gained at least that back.

That was also during a time when
1) The gaming market as a whole was still relatively small
2) Not many people had computers powerful enough to play full 3D games
3) The idea of paying a subscription fee for a video game was still relatively new, and to many, unheard of
well lets just call it an even million people right now... some how I dont really believe that many otherwise they would have had to open up more servrs to handle the load (I mean 1 million divided evenly between the 17 remaining servers is about 59000 people per server... so plenty of standing room and no competition for mobs there... and at 700000 people it would be around 41000 people per server which is soo much less crowded), but either way its not 3 to 5 million people as was being stated by the previous poster.
Doesnt really matter over all as the game is quite good, just too steep to get back into other than something to do for free when I feel nostalgic... not going to try to get to 85 or 90 or the 1000 aa when I have too many other things that dont require as much of a time investment to catch up to everyone.
Just thought I would mention that. But there are rules to FV. You cannot transfer a character off FV. You are allowed to transfer on. It is a one stop server. Once you are on, you can never get off :-D
Bestman (1) I was agreeing with you and (2) you completely misunderstood my post so I will rephrase.
Undoubtedly, more than 3 million people who used to play EQ are not currently playing. I knew hundreds (yes hundreds) of players back in 99 and none of them are playing EQ.
EQ at its peak (2001 ish) had 500,000 subscibers. Well by then *most* of the friends I made in 1999 had already quit playing.
Look at our guild roster, below. It ends in October 2001. As you can see 75% of the guild had already quit playing by then.
http://www.whitewolfbrigade.com/wwb/memblist3.asp
So yes, several million players have spent considerable time in Norrath; I never said they were doing it at the same time. Many of them would return if SOE learned to leverage their product instead of squandering it.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.

This must be a joke, EQ is lucky if it even has 50k players right now, they already combined servers multiple times and you can even go to their main page that shows server population meters and you will never see 1 server full, which their servers only hold about 5k players at one time. If there were 700k players in EQ right now they number of servers they got wouldn't hold them all and you would be runnning into leveling zones with hundreds of people grinding in them, but i can assure you that is not the case, i play F2P and most nights i'll be grinding in the HOT ZONES and have the zone all to myself or at most 10 other people. Me saying 50k is actually probably to high, but i though i would atleast make EQ players feel alittle better about the reality that is very low player numbers.
No several million have not played EQ, you can't keep adding 500k subscribers on top of a few thousand subscribers and there is no way they have quadrupled 500k NEW players since 2001, the game has been in population decline since before even WoW came out and your trying to say more then 3 times their peak memberships have played the game, that is just insane. EQ would be lucky if it hit a total of 1.2 million players throughout its life, and that i even doubt.
Not even close.
To put it very succinctly, you do not know what you're talking about. They pushed 400K concurrent players at their peak., that means they probably had at the very very very very very least 800K accounts at that time. Do you really think that they didn't have 500K people who tried it and quit (they did) by then, or in the ensuing 10 years?
Think before you type. It's not that hard.
Chukekle, we agree to disagree. You think I'm insane; I think you lack basic math skills. Have a good day.
/edit. Gee look what a 5 minute google search turned up...
"In total, about 5 million people have played EverQuest, according to John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment."

Lol, someone quoted Smed for a fact, that is to funny!
If you have any questions please ask. I have moved on to WoW from eq and no longer have any desire to play a dead game. Thank you. (posted by another selling his account in EQ1)
what kind of game is EQ1 now? I know it's F2P but what have they done to the game? Is it dumbed down, easier to level like WOW....... How is the community? Is it easy to find groups? Is there solo content?
I miss the game but I'm not sure how much of it's integrity remained......
Proud MMORPG.com member since March 2004! Make PvE GREAT Again!
Just adding spell vendors in a nice little horizontal row in the PoK library who sale all spells would go a long way to improving the game for me. Having spells drop from mobs and/or crafted is a design decision best left in 1999.
They did this earlier this year. For all spells up to 85 at least. Much easier now than it was
That's good for new players and alts, but in my opinion, they didn't go far enough.
