Can You Move During Combat?

RollieJoeRollieJoe Member UncommonPosts: 451

Hey all - hoping someone with a higher level character can answer a quick Tera question for me.

I played in the last Closed Beta, but since it was so short I only managed to get one Priest to level 12 and one Archer to level 11 (might have the class names wrong).  One thing I noticed about the combat on both characters was that to do any attack, including spells/abilities with no cast time, it seemed to require that I was standing still.

Does this change at higher levels?  In other words, do you eventually get skills that you can use while moving?  Was I doing something wrong?  The requirement to always be standing perfectly still to fight kinda ruined the combat for me, personally.  Thanks in advance for some info!

Most attack will cause a pause in movement, or aka root animation. This is part of action combat,  however skill that require charge up like archer and berserker skill will allow you to charge while moving as you lvl up.

The purpose of the root animation is so that you don't randomly spam attack, because each hit will make you stop you have to think ahead and make each on count. Although warriors have much more moblitity while attacking compare to other classes.

Yeah the melee combat is much more akin to Monster Hunter than say Ninja Gaiden.

At first when you don't have a lot of skills it makes the combat seem a bit slow and limiting, but after you level a bit and figure it out it makes it much more strategic and fun IMO as you have to lead targets and judge distance to land your big hitting moves.

The combat is still pretty fast paced, but it makes it where it's not a button smasher.

As for ranged classes that you played I've never played a priest but I know for archer you will pretty much always have to stop to actually shoot your attack, at higher levels you are able to move while charging though and you'll get some nice dodge and stun skills to help you build distance. Again some might find this weird but it's a balancing thing because archers could kite all day if they could shoot and move, with this system you have to be much more strategic about how you use your dodges and when you stop to pop off the big shots.

I've played Archer till lvl 26, and I can say that you will get some very mobile attacks. Or you can get some glyphs that can help with that.. ;) Just be smart when you play.

To be a good Archer, always be moving/dodging..

IM definately gonna play Archer!! :D

I like the fact that you are rooted for a short time during attacks. It makes you think ahead about each attack you do, what its casting or attack animation time is and how it might leave you exposed. Adds a real sense of fast paced strategy like in Dark Souls.
