Disclaimer: I really haven't followed this game too closely, as it wasn't something that interested me, but I did get a beta key for this weekend and am going to utilize it with an open mind and see what the game is about. I've read the beginner guides on the site, but would like to know what would be a good level for me to shoot for this weekend in order to get a solid view of the game's strengths?
What I mean by that is that I've heard the beginning area is pretty standard stuff, even a bit boring. I don't have an issue with that, as I know most MMOs start off this way in order to give players a chance to get comfortable with the game. So I expect that, particularly for a game like this that will have a steeper learning curve than your standard themepark game. But I'm going to be basing a lot of my opinion of the game on this weekend, and I plan on giving it a good look.
So, how is leveling in this game? Slow? Fast? And what level could I expect to get to after 2 and a half days of playing, provided I put in a good amount of play time (let's say 25-30 hours of gameplay). I've heard the world really becomes more open and the game more exciting once you get out of the starter area, with more skills, and more BAM's running around everywhere. So what level should I really shoot for to see the best that this game has to offer? And what is realistic for me to achieve with the speed in which you level in this game?
One other question: How does skill progression work in this game? Do you just train skills every few levels? Or is there another method to augment those skills or obtain new skills, like a talent tree-type thing?
Thanks in advance. Just want to go into the game with an open mind and give it a fair shot.

25-30 hours? You should be able to reach the level 38 cap no problem, if you are efficient. Join a big guild and maybe some people around your level will be on and they can group with you for BAM repeatable quests.
You just train skills and level them up then at level 20 you have a glyph system that lets you personally customize skills, also crystals you socket into your armor provide nice stat or effect boosts and you can customize them to your playstyle. Bonues damage to BAMs, bonus damage when attacking from behind, chance to summon shield when knocked down, etc, etc.
One problem is the level cap is not being raised this BETA so I fear PvP servers might get a little hectic, I know me and my guild will be all over waring and deathmatching people and if a low level gets caught in the crossfire well...such is they way of warfare.
You should be able to run all three dungeons and test out all the BAMs in the field if you like, finding groups might be a little more difficult now though because many people will be at cap and the dungeon finder is not in the game yet. You could always try solo'ing BAMs, that's a fun challenge, but the dungeons are another story.
Here's some maps showing the 3 instance locations and as many BAMs as I can remember in the main zones you'll be in(not all of this is fact, it's the best of my memory, not 100% accurate).
Ahhh excellent. Thanks for the info. Like I said, the game isn't one that I've been interested in following, but since I got a beta key, I plan on giving it a serious look before making any judgements. And I don't want to sell it short after only a few levels. I've been told it gets much more exciting once you get out of the starter area, so I was hoping I'd be able to reach the 20's at least this weekend. As long as the game doesn't completely turn me off, I plan on sticking it out and seeing as much of it as I can. Hopefully, there will be enough people like myself around to help with BAMs, so I can get a feel for the grouping and such.
