[Poll] How many themepark games did you buy?

LarsaLarsa Member Posts: 990

There's a thread about whether you play a popular game here: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/346078/Do-you-play-a-TOP-9-game.html.

The posts in that thread (and the poll results) got me wanting to know how many (AAA?) themepark games you guys have bought over the years, no matter whether as box or as digital download. For this poll it's irrelevant how long you played the game. I just want to know how many themeparks you have bought, no matter whether you cancelled in the included 30 "free" days or whether you subscribed to the game.

So out of the following six games (in alphabetical order): AoC, LotRO, Rift, SWToR, WAR, WoW. How many of those six games did you buy?

[Edit: Buying a game means buying it. When you played one of those games only in their F2P phase you did not buy the game.]

I bought WoW when I was young and dumb but I stopped cause it wasn't doing it for me. I have played LOTRO but not put in any money. And only for a month or so.

No, buying a box is buying a box. And that was the question. :)

When you played one of those games only as F2P you didn't buy the box. :)

    Bought:

WAR -Bought into the hype...Played like 6 months I think...

Rift - Was on a big break from MMOs, was ok, good company, world too railed/small...3 months...

TOR - Had friends playing, so decided to play, even though I had a ton of doubt....Lasted 1 month...

    Didn't buy:

WoW - Played beta, never got into it, so didn't buy..Seemed like half DAoC without any real things to do in beta, and more of what I disliked that EQ had become.

AoC - Tried trial, seemed ok, just didn't grab me.

LotRo - Played trial, looked nice, was boring.

Played EQ and UO for 6 to 8 years on and off....Vanguard was the last MMO that I really liked as a whole package, despite it's problems...But I never had a lot of the problems people had, had a brand new gaming computer for it's launch, so I didn't see everything others had problems with.

Bought them all except Rift, I could tell right from the beta it wasn't for me.

I've bought many others as well...I'm learning, but slowly, I don't buy as many as I used to.

Curious, I would have figured Aion would have made this list as well.

Need more MMOs in the list and also need another poll :

Of the ones you did buy how many did you subscribe after the free month?

Bought 3 of those and add EQ2, Vanguard, and Aion to that. Of all of them, only EQ2 and Vanguard did sub for over 6months.

WoW and its expension TBC, WotLK and Cata (not MoP)

    Aion

Everquest and six expensions (not EQ2)

    LotRO (before F2P)

Those I played the most are WoW and Rift

I've bought and played a decent number of theme park games.  While I like good sandbox games, I also like good theme park games such as Guild Wars or Champions Online.  The only one of those six that I've ever played was WoW, and that was largely because at the time, I didn't know any better.

All except Rift.  Played its' Beta, and it really didn't interest me.

Still playing LOTRO, SWTOR and WOW (Subbed to all of them)

Over the years I have bought 2 themepark games.  It's not like I don't like themeparks,  I just get bored of the mechanics.

WoW:  played it for like 2 weeks and dropped it.

Aion:  played it for 2 months and dropped it.

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

Tried two of them, bought none of them. Been gaming way too long to buy right off. Themepark is not my style, I'm an oldschool DnD pen and paper player. I attribute that to my disgust for themepark games. I love the DnD style grind and diversity, having to choose carefully etc etc etc. Do not like sugar coated, brightly colored games that play themselves for you.

Out of those listed, I bought Rift (should have saved my money) and WoW.

    SWTOR was bought for me.

  • KenFisherKenFisher Member UncommonPosts: 5,035

    Ones I purchased...

Guild Wars - Yep, own it, play it often.

Wow - 5 accounts worth, I used to multibox it.  SOR was very nice to me... 4 instant 80s :-)

    Ones I didn't purchase...

Rift - Still haven't made it in.

Lotro - Another on the todo list.

    Eve - Not interested.

Everquest II - Not interested, much less than EVE.  Not even close to a fan of SOE.

Fallen Earth - I was really busy when this game was hot.  Sorry I missed that.

Aion - Too PVP centric for my liking.  Nice character art though.

Swtor - Maybe later.  Thinking it won't be long until the bargain bin.

Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security.  I don't Forum PVP.  If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident.  When I don't understand, I ask.  Such is not intended as criticism.

All 6 of those plus a dozen more at least.

I'll purchase a game, play it for 1 day and hardly ever go back to it.  Fuck, I've bought games that I've never played.

It's a bad habit of mine.  That and smoking, and perscription pain killers, and burritos.

  • Calhoun619Calhoun619 Member Posts: 126

    Sadly, all of them.

Whats even more sad is I bought AoC twice and LotRO 3 times...

Edit: Ive also have a unopened copy of Tabula Rasa that, of course cant be use now.

I bought only one, which was WOW. Played it a little less than a month and got really tired of the nausea I was feeling from all the quests. So I stopped playing. I also tried LOTRO and EQ2 in F2P. Then I couldn't get Beck's Nausea song out of my head.. Best part about the whole experience is that I love that song.

I buy games because I think they are fun. No time to sit around and worry about a themepark or a sandbox or any of that. If it is fun it is fun.

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

Bought 4, played one after the free month(LOTRO).

    Currently bored with MMO's.

I never buy games wether it is based off of being a sandbox or theme park but I will say now that because there is so many failed theme parks out there now I really want to dive into a nice sandbox and give it a whirl. Sick of theme park mmos.

Grim Dawn, the next great action rpg!

    Bought all except LoTRO.

    Also bought Aion.

    Bought all the sandoxes.

I think I'm finally learning to be hesitant.

I bought everquest, which I loved.

Next I bought wow, which I also loved

I then bought War, again I loved it (would still be playing if they didn't abandon the game)

Lastly I've gotten swtor, currently loving it.

    Yes I played SWTOR.

    All except for Rift V_V

WoW was the first, from then onwards it feels like a sliding slope of increasingly bigger disappointments. It has been said a million times but the themepark formula has been recycled too much at this time; each new game offers a handful of novel aspects and a fresh setting to distinguish itself from previous themeparks but 90% remains the same (of which a sizeable chunk is badly implemented too).

I'm kind of fed up with games offering only preconstructed rides in designated areas and not giving players the freedom to make their own compelling content.
