Any decent laptops out there?

SevensoddSevensodd Member Posts: 322

Whose got a link for me?! I've been looking around newegg at laptops but I've never bought one before, so I'm not exactly sure what to look for in a laptop. Something that has a cpu around an i5 performance and a dedicated gpu.

Depends what your budget is, and what your main goal is with the laptop

You should add what you actually wanna do with it and also give a maximum price.

Price range around 500-1000.  II'll be doing normal school stuff on it, and would be nice if it could handle games (hence the dedicated GPU).

How soon do you need it?  Rumors say Trinity launches on May 15, and that will get you the moderate gaming performance you need on integrated graphics.  The processor performance will likely at least be competitive with a Sandy Bridge Core i5, too.

If you need something right now, you could pick up a Llano system.

Not very soon, I could wait a month.

Well if you shop on New Egg you can always look at laptop that are the highest rated and see what people have to say about them and see if it fits your needs, and if it comes with bundles that you may want for school, such as MS office or w/e

Personally I am into Sager Laptops, even tho they are not flashy they are well made and reliable, and can usually build it to fit your needs and budget.

If you do plan on gaming with it tho you may want to choose one with a 17 inch monitor.

And yes if you are willing to go with AMD they have been hot items with there new chips, and like always AMD is usually quite a bit cheaper, take a small hit on performace sometimes but  I think at times you do get more bang for your buck.

Before I started my own thread I thought I'd post here.

I'm looking for a gaming laptop for ~1000$ (could go up to ~1500 if there is a HUGE advantage)

I'm currently waiting for Diablo III, Tera, Archage, and afcourse GW2.

I'm looking for a computer to run those games very smoothly.

I tried looking myself and I was about to build my own PC but the one I have is still doing fine and I would like a laptop this time.

Something with a mininmum 15.5" screen would be nice, and I'm not sure how much I trust cheap brands so the better reputation of the brand, the better for me.

I was thinking of buying the laptop very soon but might way till August latest, by the time fall semester start I would like to be set.

If anyone can help me out that would be great.

PS: I dont need windows7 to be installed on the laptop nor any type of antivirus protection.

Being a first time buyer, you want to stick away from anything over a grand if you ask me.  Its very easy to overpay for laptops currently and not get what you want.  Newegg has a good selection of them but finding one that is worth it takes some time.  The three main things you want to look for when buying a laptop being a first time buyer is bang for buck, powerfull legit components, and technical support.  Its very hard to find all 3 things in a laptop so keeping an eye out for good deals is a must.  I would recommend not getting a full fledged gaming laptop to begin with, alot of the gaming laptops lack the features that most multimedia users could use, little things like backlit keyboards, media controls and other things like ambient light sensors and to be honest just good keyboards in general.

I own a Lenovo Ideapad Y460, I have an alienware gaming laptop as well.  I have to honestly say my lenovo is a amazing peace of equipement for the price when I got it.  You can see how games run on my lenovo at http://www.youtube.com/notebookplayer.  If there was one laptop I would suggest looking into it would be the new Lenovo Ideapad Y480/580 series, its set to release late in april, so a few more weeks.  Here is link, http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/ideapad/y-series/, you can click on the Y480 part to read about it as it still says coming soon.  Iv never been so excited for a line of laptop, there bringing the very powerfull Nvidia Geforce GT 650/660 series graphics cards to the lineup, the 650 is for the Y480 and 660 is for Y580(Y480 is a 14 inch screen and Y580 is 15.6 inch) which has GDDR5 video memory in the Nvidia graphics cards making them extremely powerfull laptops.  The Y480 is going to start at 999.00$, they will also have the brand new Ivy Bridge processors in them.  Never before has such powerfull components been put into such a small form factor with the Y480, it will be an amazing laptop.

The next laptop I would recommend would be from Malibal, http://www.malibal.com/boutique/pc/configurePrd.asp?idProduct=524, this laptop is cutting edge clevo barebones unit which is very powerfull, it starts at 1066.00$.  Since its a clevo barebones, many companys sell it, xoticpc also sells it as well as sager, although as of right now sager I think only has three laptops in there lineup for sale.  Heres xoticpcs same laptop for same price as malibal, http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np9130-clevo-p151em1-p-4340.html.   Acer is releasing a laptop probably in late april early may, called the Acer Aspire timeline Ultra M3, its cutting edge, 15.6 inch very thin and made for gaming, here is a review of it http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Acer-Aspire-Timeline-Ultra-M3-581TG-Ultrabook.72194.0.html on notebookcheck.com starting at 999.00$, Its very cool, very! One thing I recommend to people, especially people that have money upfront and are serious about buying something that is good, is to buy brand new, like the Ideapad Y480/580 series or the Acer Timeline M3 series Iv mentioned, they are soon to be released and having something brand spanken new is so much cooler and sweeter then paying top doller for something that has been out for a year or two and has less powerfull components.

So being a hardcore laptop enthusiast that spends the better part of my day gawking over all the new laptops and revisions(laptop line upgrades) I would definitely look into the soon to be released Lenovo Ideapad Y480/580 series or the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3.  Theres still more to recommend though then those two sweet ass laptops, definitely check into the malibal and xoticpc one I linked.  The nice thing about the two ones I mentioned above though is they wont break the bank and if you want to resell them there so new you would be able to get 80-90% of your money back if you wanted to go all out on an expensive gaming laptop.

Being a first time buyer I would never recommend Alienware, there very easy to turn into bricks it seems and if there not tweaked just right you get alot of blue errors or bsod's it seems, even so checking out alienwares m11x/m14x is a must for anyone looking into purchasing a laptop, you can get good deals for a first time buyer using there outlet for refurbished or used ones if you watch close enough.  Here is there website, http://www.alienware.com/Landings/laptops.aspx and here is the outlet which you can find great deals sometimes for much cheaper then retail price http://www.dell.com/us/dfh/p/alienware-laptops.aspx?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh&~ck=mn specifically for alienware laptops.  The outlet even though there used still gives you the same warranty as if it were new, so even though I could never recommend buying used equipement especially alienware, if something does go wrong you still got the warranty there to cover you.

Ill go through a few more, I could really keep going on for days, alot of people like Asus branded gaming laptops but im not that into them.  Most people think there the only legit gaming laptops out there, thats hardly the case.  They are overly heavy and probably the most bulky laptops there are on the market at the moment, the G series at least.  Sony has a few nice laptops that can game, but I wouldnt recommend them, the CA/CB series(starts at 799.00$(you have to watch tho cause they dont come with dedicatd gaming GPU by default) and the SA/SB series laptops both have capable dedicated graphics chips in them but there underclocked and have slower GDDR3 memory as apposed to something like the Lenovo Y480 which has GDDR5 memory and there really not made for gaming as the cooling especially in the S series I would say is flat out terribly designed.  MSI makes gaming laptops, I wouldnt recommend them at this time though, there upgrades are silly terrible this year and are very expensive for what you get.  Cyberpower also makes gaming laptops but there sorta the same thing as MSI currently which is overpriced for what you get which isnt much.  There gaming laptops, thats it, there sold as that, and to be honest are pritty lame compared to some of the really cool newer multimedia laptops like the Y480 and Acer M3 i keep mentioning.

I wouldnt recommend finding your own laptop on newegg either as a first time buyer, theres is a whole hell of a lot of crap crap out there that would probably make you a very unhappy laptop fan as well as overpriced for your needs.  Finding a laptop that would cater to the 3 things I mentioned in the first paragraph would be almost impossible unless you were a fan like me and looked threw them everyday and knew what was worth it or not.  If you do how ever find something you like on newegg make sure to double check with someone that its the one your looking for and not just something that seems like it.  You can message me over my youtube channel if you like when ever or skype me, my nickname is jefferybaks if you have any questions.

    I use the Asus G53sw

    -Intel® Core™ i7 2630QM Processor

    -NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460M 1.5GB GDDR5 VRAM

    -8 gigs DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM

I paid just under $1000 when it was on sale at Frys electronics.

Its a good laptop at a, in my opinion, good price.  But, its still a laptop.  If I had upgraded my desktop I could have gotten much better hardware at the same price.

I can play skyrim at max settings, BF3 at max settings, WoW at max settings, LoL at max settings, but funny enough, I would get horrendous performance when playing SWTOR.

However, the SWTOR performance can be blamed on the terrible coding - which fans actually documented quite well in the SWTOR forums, including video evidence and hardware performance data.

Dont mean to derail.  So I'll keep this short.  I only played Swtor beta.  I did one single thing.  I took the "ground debris" slider and I moved it BARELY at all down.  I mean I just barely nudged it.  And there was absolutely no graphical difference.  And then my game ran as smooth as butter which is the weirdest thing Ive ever seen with a game.  Thats all I did.  Just barely tapping that ground debris slider took Swtor from running like crap, to running beautifully.

    Sorry folks, carry on......

Sorry to further derail this thread but...

I also played the SWTOR beta and I actually didn't have horrendous performance issues.  Everything was fine.  When I actually lowered the settings, they visually were lowered and my performance (FPS) increased.  Likewise, when I increased the graphics settings, my  FPS would drop - which was to be expected.  But BW/EA/Mythic did something weird when the game was released and that is when I started getting horrendous performance - Warzones were a nightmare. Lowering my graphics settings amounted to no visual nor performance change.

It's also obsolete and probably off the market.  And it's going to be very, very obsolete in about 15 days.

That's not obsolete in the sense of "you should get rid of it".  Rather, it's in the sense of "it makes no sense at all to buy new".
