After mulling things over all weekend and sitting the fence for some time now. I have made a decision regarding GW2.

There are a few things I do not like, I don't like buying a product  2-3 months before it is commercially available. It is not like it is unheard of in other industries though. People order books or vacations in advance. You could make a point that anyone who orders anything off the internet is making a bit of a "leap of faith".  I have decided to look at this aspect as an opportunity to join a test market.

I don't really care for the cash shop idea in this game or in any game really. I don't like DLC on my PS3 either. I understand why it is going to be though. Like it or not, most games will be going this route in the future. People who scoff at paying 15$ a month fee for a game for some reason have no problem paying for bits and pieces of a facebook castle. So the Item malls are not going anywhere just like DLC will continue to be prominent. I have decided I can live with a cash shop, as long as I do not have to live IN the cash shop.

My final bone of contention for right now is that quite a few of the videos I saw were pretty laggy at times. This one is going to be tough. It is a PvP game. You cant have constant noticeable lag in a PVP game.  Lag is a death sentence for an online game in 2012. Bioware really blew it in this department IMO. Not everyone is going to be able to run out and buy a new PC for one or two games. Now I know it is beta and they are "still optimizing" according to Totalbiscuit, but the thought of a laggy experience in W v W v W  with a hundred or more people roaming around really does concern me. So does the thought that I might have to go spend a ton of money on a new PC. I have a 1 GB video card and plenty of RAM. WoW CATA, DCUO, and most other MMO's I've tried play just fine on medium settings. NOT SWTOR though. So that thought concerns me quite a bit.

IMO if you can't offer the smooth gameplay of WoW in 2012, then your game isn't gonna make it.

Ok, I've made up my mind, but just for fun. What do you think I should do?

( PS. My decision is to get the game. Gonna make my wife buy it for me  *grin*

Thank you all for the kind Birthday wishes!)

( Note to self-Don't say anything bad about Drizzt.)

    Happy Early Birthday!

Considering you have reservations about the cash shop, I'd suggest waiting for release to see exactly what ends up being sold. I have the same concerns and have adopted a wait and see attitude.

  • Mors-SubitaMors-Subita Member UncommonPosts: 517

    I would go for it.

There is a lot of awesome on the other side of the equation.

As for the lag, you have to remember that the media were also running fraps at the time, which kills your frame-rate horribly. Also, at least some of the media people are not running serious gaming rigs.

I've seen plenty of videos with 0 lag... *shrug.

Happy early BDay! as to your reservations.. read the threads both good and bad. Make your own decision on your own thoughts of videos and information available. Also remember this.. this game you only have to spend money once, do you ever hesitate on buying a single player game because you might want to spend money later? Hell single player games don't let you see as much as GW2 as an MMO has let you see.

Put that sixty bucks in your sock drawer and wait until the game is closer to release (or shortly after) to get the full preview.

If it's great, fantastic. If it blows, then you've got enough to have a fun evening on the town.

    Also, Happy Birthday.

You say "look at the aspect as an oppurtunity to join a test market" but then you go on debating about "pretty laggy" and still yet say you understand that its in beta.  From your reasoning you are holding back because of typical beta problems.

To rationally and logically debate this for you WoW beta vs The videos you saw of GW2 beta... I was part of WoW beta and I can honestly tell you that it was by far worse then anything I've seen in any GW2 video.

If you are wanting to join the oppurtunity to help the "test market" you have to fully accept that beta does infact = lag, glitches without.. WITHOUT expecting it to be released as such.  Debating a fully launched game which has been polished for years vs a game in beta is a fruitless argument if you truly do realise its in beta and still being optimized.

In 10 years of closed beta testing I've barely seen any game fully optimised until 2 weeks before launch.

So my suggestion to you would be not to even bother with the beta weekends and wait to get the game when its fully launched because from the sounds of it you are expecting it to be a fully polished game in beta.

In my experience most games by the time they reach open beta state are almost exactly the same as the launched product. In fact more often than not something is removed at the last minute not added.

I was merely posting my concern that there is a bit of a lag problem. If there is still a lag problem at launch it will be a major issue with a lot of people not just me.

My concern is if people pay for this game before trying it, and there is a problem down the line, there will be little recourse at that point. After all, if people are already paying for it , where is the motivation to make SURE it is "fully optimized" ?

If people will buy it  "as is"  it must be good enough right?

See, that is why I have qualms about it.

I agree that CONTENT-WISE anyone expecting major changes is dreaming.

However for performance I have seen certain things dramatically changed, for better and worse, during the last month of beta.

Secondly the "lag" not network lag.  Its some garphics performance stuff which is a whole other kettle of fish.  I am taking this from multiple videos which had some pretty solid anecdotal evidence that it was graphics based not lag based.

Graphics optimizations can certainly happen over the next month or two.

    Edit:

Actually even network lag issues have shown up and been fixed during open beta.  Aion had really bad ISP problems during I had to use a prxory service for a week then they fixed it (ie. called teh ISP and yell at them).  So even network lag stuff can get fixed in OB stage.

This actually makes me feel a little better. I do hope it is very crisp and clean at launch.

Like I said earlier, my wifey asked me what I wanted for my B-day, I said a video game. She's gonna give me 60 bucks for it.

So now it is a gift and nothing lost.

    Firstly happy birthday.

Secondly I said no simply because of that comment right there. WoW is still running on an OLD engine. And its not that the game cant offer the smooth gameplay of WOW in 2012 its that if you havent updated your PC in the last 5 years you shouldnt expect to run current games. Graphics just dont involve art style which most people tend to forget. High rez textures ect are becomming the norm and no Dev should be expected to optimize for 5+ year old PC's. And people shouldnt expect older PC's to run perfectly when you have 100+ players running around in a small area.

PS. WOW in 2012 struggles to handle 40-50 people in one area all casting spells ect on high end PC's. Dont kid yourself.

PSS. Again, happy birthday. I just happen to disagree with you :)

    Happy birthday.

Wait until your point of criticism have been either dissolved, so you can buy it without remorse, or confirmed so you can decide not to buy it.

There really is no need to buy it right now, unless you need to sooth your impatient self :)

edit: meh, should have read the page first -_-°

grats on your purchase, hope there won't be buyers remorse.

    Thanks you !

My wife couldn't find me a gift ( I was not sure about that when I first posted this. )  So when she asked me what I would like yesterday afternoon, I just jumped in with GW2. She said ," How much is it?" I said," 60 bones."

Then she said, "Ok go ahead and get it I'll put 60 towards your credit card for it."

So, now it is a gift and I can really have no remorse. Good bad or ugly.

Well, I could have asked for the CE... I guess... She's got the money :)    LoL

Naw, I'm plenty happy. Now I can spend my little budget on D3 or X-com when they come.
