Except starting out and crafting right out of the gate is not going to happen. Its going to take alot of homework on how you want to skill build your character for what you want to craft before you can start churning out items. And you can always get killed anytime and lose your crafting mats.

@xDayx Check his 1st requirement again, he said a decent community... Okay, kinda joking.. Even if I would not recommend it to him, I think he should try it..

Now at OP, what I suggest:

-A tale in the Desert MMO (ATITD), it perfectly matches your defintion (if you don't bother with combat, as ATITD doesn't have any at all) a completely crafting sandbox MMO, with great community but NO COMBAT.

-Ryzom (also perfectly matches your definition),excellent crafting system and the best (imo) community in MMOs

-Wurm Online and Ultima Online, if you don't bother with graphics (both excellent sandboxes)

-Vanguard, more of a hybrid but I think you will like it.

-Well, why not, also check Uncharted Waters Online, Xsyon, Darkfall Online and Mortal online..

Hmm, well more come to my mind.. How could I forget about the sci-fi hits.. Definitely check Eve online (it's really complex, but a super sandbox) and have a look at Perpetuum and Earthrise.

Sandbox MMORPGs that are not very well-known but definitely worth a look:

Ryzom, Haven and Hearth, Xsyon, The Repopulation, UO private shards, Mortal Online, Darkfall 1 remakes (New Dawn or Rise of Agon), RPG MO, Project Gorgon, EQ: Sanctuary (custom  server)

if you dont care much about graphics, you can also try istaria

There isn't much worth mentioning :(

Darkfall and Mortal are both cool concepts. However, far to extreme for me with all the forced first-person and full loot axiom.

I really liked SWG. But that's been dead since 2006.

ArcheAge and EverQuest "Next" are the only MMOs I look forward to playing. They are both probably way off, too.

Not tried it but people, whose judgements have been sound before, tell me Fallen Earth has decent crafting, it's F2P so costs nothing but time to check out.

EDIT: maybe not sandboxy apart from that though.

Yea I would say EVE Online, Perpetuum or Fallen Earth as well.

EVE Online obviously has a well established community, time-based mining/industry operations and a very large player economy.

Perpetuum is similar to EVE, but is lacking the size of the EVE community, and is much less complicated (for better or worse).

Fallen Earth again has a dimished community, but good time-based crafting and player run economy.

Only "downside" to all these economies (if you think its a downside) is that they all use Auction House based systems, so there's no real peddling of your wares.

Actually in EVE despite the marketplace, in any market hub you will be inundated with market spam, some legit, some outright scams, (pvp is everywhere) but quite a bit of commerce is transacted verbally.

EVE is probably the most developed, most populated sandbox style title out there today, but it most certainly is an acquired taste and not to everyone's liking.

Vanguard has a really great crafting system which offers its own set of gear and stats as well.  Not to mention the game is just excellent.

Archeage recently wrapped up its 4th Closed Beta Test, but unfortunately, there is still no word of a release date for NA or EU, or whether or not a publisher will pick it up.

Fan support outside of Korea is picking up, and there are sites where you can read more about the game.

All in all, it sounds like it could be a lot of fun, but like others have said, it's probably a long way off yet.

I hate to say it, but there isn't much as far as sandbox games available right now.

Most of the ones around like Mortal Online or Eve have a nearly vertical learning curve, and are SUPER unforgiving (like full loot pvp and stuff).

If a space game is up your alley then I'd say check out Eve first, as it's probably the closeest to a Triple A sandbox title as is currently available.

I tried all of them..and although it's not really what I'm looking for...I'm still playing Eve

As far as stuff coming down the pipe...

http://www.therepopulation.com/   The Repopulation seems like it has to potential to be VERY cool, it looks like it will be the replacement for SWG style gameplay.

http://www.archeage.com/en  The US release date for this one is anybody's guess for sure, but it's got a major Korean studio behind it, and it seems to be packing better tech than anything else out on the market, graphics are > SWTOR or WoW, or basically anything in the MMO arena, and it's a sandbox...

Basically...it is what SWTOR should have been...but without the star wars intellectual property...
