So I'm in my 30's now. I started with EQ1, loved it, played around with some others, Anarchy Online, DAoC, LoTRO, SWG pre NGE, EVE Online, WoW, EQ2. Most of my time has been spent in EQ1 and EQ2. Now I can't find a game that can hold my attention...I have to log off from sheer boredom. I tested out Rift the other day, logged in.....get quest, mash buttons, return to quest giver...log out. I need something different. I want something with good community and good population. Combat, yeah t's ok, but I don't want it in large doses anymore. I can also only play casually, maybe 10 hours a week.
I've been playing Battlefield 3 for a bit now, and it's all I play because all the MMO's I try don't seem any different than the last one I tried.
I liked Darkfall, but the population was weak, EVE was ok, but became repetetive, WoW....boring....
Suggestions? I haven;t been up on the newest games, researching them now....
Playing EVE online currently. Started MMO's with EQ Velious, played EQ2, DAoC, CoH, AO, SWG (pre NGE), Planetside, DCUO. Played briefly cause I didn't like: WAR, WoW, VG, etc. etc.

Well I've enjoyed Pirates of the Burning sea. Given a chance I think the game is pretty great, especially if you like naval ship combat which the game does very well. Its easy to get into. Its the kind of game I can play for 15 min and enjoy or 5 hours.
The game is F2P however there are some minor restrictions involving trade and ship storage. If you pay the sub fee just one time of $15, you can then immediately cancel and the game stays unlocked forever. So I sort of consider it a $15 B2P game.
I also just read on the forums here that apparently Aion is F2P now with little or no restrictions at all. I havent ever played it or checked it out but that might be worth looking into perhaps.
Thanks for the reply. Tried Aion at launch, more of the same to me. I'll look at PotBS...

You found Eve repetitive? Something tells me you didn't get very deep into it. What did you do while you played it?
Where's the any key?
EVE was a game that I really wanted to give a chance. Maybe I didn't get into it deep enough. I killed stuff, upgraded my ship, for quite a while. Can someone still create a character and play along with the more experienced players at this juncture? I've done the trial like 3 or 4 times, subscribed once or twice, but I end up leaving. I'd like to be part of a good corp and have stuff to do, but it never seemed to materialize.

I think PBS is probably the better choice for him. Aion is more of the same.
Honestly it sounds like he's in the same conundrum as a lot of players here. The same MMOs has been getting made for the last 10 or so years, just repacked and reskined.
There have been some more interesting ones, but not many still have healthy populations =/.
if you don't mind instanced small-scale games there are quite a few options now that have different combat.
if you need a virtual online world with action combat, Tera, RaiderZ and FireFall (FPS) are the only ones i can think of to recommend atm.

I'm guessing by "killed stuff" you meant PvE via missions. Half decent source of income to start, but keep in mind: that's maybe 10% of what Eve has to offer. One other very, very important thing to remember: Eve will NOT simply hand you anything on a plate. You have to choose your path, and through your own determination walk it (or fly it, in this case).
If you want to mine, then get yourself the skills, ship and equipment needed to mine and go do it.
If you want to PvP, get yourself the skills, ship, equipment, and ideally a shit-ton of friends, and go do it.
Although Eve has a sizeable amount of content that could be done solo, some of which can be rather entertaining for a while, it really isn't designed to be done solo. To truly get into its best aspects you have to fully embrace the second M of MMORPG. You need to play with others. If you do give it another try, do whatever you can to find a decent corporation of players to fly with. There are those corps that are somewhat more elitist and only take seasoned veterans, but there are others that are willing to accept anyone. I believe there is a forum thread on the Eve Online main website specifically for looking for corporations. Another option: Fly around a little in some more populated areas (which would usually be Caldari space in general, especially around Jita), and just take a quick peek at the character profiles of various pilots you see. If they aren't in an NPC corp, look at that corp's description. If they say they're a casual corp that accepts any applications (and has more than 5 members), try applying. You never know what you may find.
And, if they end up being dicks, you can leave with the click of a button and try again.
Where's the any key?
Shadowtale for sure is game for you. One of the best mmorpg's out there.
Ya... Eve is really hard to get the full experience on a trail alone.
That said, I think you may have missed the boat on that game. There is a game called perpetuum that is similar, and free.
I feel your plight. Now that I'm writing this post, two games jumped out on me and you may have named one of them but I'll list them both and they're F2P, so no harm in at least giving them a try.
The first is DC Universe Online. I think it would definitely be a little bit different from what you've played and the action might really pull you in. The downside is that I've heard that the game is really quite sure.
The other game, which you may have listed is DDO which I think is one of the better F2P games and is one I would highly recommend if you haven't tried it yet.
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes goes F2P this Summer and is a game that I really think you'd enjoy, especially if you like old-school Everquest. Right now, the community and subscribers is vitually non-existent but I expect to see a healthy community with more frequent updates once it goes free.
Of the not yet released games, I think The Secret World might really be something that you might like, although it might also really really suck.
Finally if you're into Diablo style games, Path of Exile is sort of a MMO'ish take on Diablo and is really nicely done. It's in Closed Beta still, I believe. Well, those are just a few things you might consider.
Try ones that take it in a new direction, and have zero barrier to entry;
Uncharted Waters, Wurm Online and Face of Mankind
Each is drastically different, and may last you forever if it's your thing.

Sadly games that are a actual challenge do not exist nor are made anymore, its all this casualified bullshit that is made now a days. Devs went from making games because they enjoy it to trying to milk established formula's for max money.Look at Diablo Diablo 1 was ok Diablo 2 rocked, Diablo 3.. wtf? they went way backwards to somewhere between diablo 1 and 2. Mass Effect just got more simplified as it went on, as did dungeon siege, dragon age 2 was a total joke compared to the first one in pretty much every way. It really depresses me what gaming has become, the only light in the tunnel is indie devs, since they are the only ones willing to deviate from established things anymore. Don't even get me started on the mmorpg scene, since world of warcrafts release, pretty much the only mmo's we have seen have been generic wannabe clones, SWToR comes to mind as a major offender of this, you can pretty much say bioware took wow and droped a starwars skin on it, because its that much of a clone. Begun the world of warcraft clone-wars has.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
I liked Darkfall, but the population was weak, EVE was ok, but became repetetive, WoW..
A lot of posters seem to share that view (me included). Not sure why it didn't grip me perhaps 'spread sheets in space' is too close to work for me or maybe it was finding earning cash early in the game tedious. Still qudos to them anyway.
I also find myslef in a similar position to you (though I don't think there is much left I havent played). I am cautiously optomistic that guild wars 2 might offer some new twists on the old formula. I am also hoping that The Secret World with its modern day setting and skill based approach might prove an intresting diversion.
I hear ya, the new games are boring for me mostly because there is no requirement to group. Not only that, but progression is either achieved at the same rate solo, or most of the time you progress FASTER when playing solo rather than grouped. I thought about this long and hard because... there's plenty of group content in these games, I just chose to not participate for whatever reason. In the end I had to get over myself, and put in effort to create connections, group with others and participate in the community.
And a lot of what I found is that the community in a lot of these games is fine, but there's nothing "forcing" you to go down a social route anymore. So it takes a little effort. I also have tried EVE multiple times on trials and just found it boring, but I never really got into the game until I forced myself to be more social, join a corp, and run missions with others. I did end up leaving the game because SWTOR came out and I wanted to play that, but I stayed MUCH longer by creating connections with other players... just required some determination and effort.
But... to more to your question. If you liked the idea of EVE, but never could get fully into it I would recommend trying Perpetuum. Very similar gameplay mechanics, but much newer so you don't feel like you are lightyears behind and not nearly as complicated (for better or worse).
For now I've been playing LoL because although I always enjoyed PvE more than anything, the "forced grouping" of the 5v5 random queue system makes me be more social and I enjoy that.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you, being tired of all the substandard MMORPG's. I did come across a quite fun game though although it has not managed to catch my attention in the long run. There's nearly no footage on YouTube and if there is it sucks monkeyballs but I can guarantee you it's a ton of fun and something entirely different from the usual Rift, EQ2: it's called Mortal Online; it still needs some polish though but it's a real eye opener if you've been stuck with the themeparks for so long.
Otherwise there really is no choice for you as far as existing MMORPG's go. I'm currently re-visiting Eq2.
Mortal Online. Especially after the next expansion comes out. www.mortalonline.com
Have you been in a coma? No offense. Just curious.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
I would say give MO a go as well.. there is a trail so you can give it a go before buying... Get yourself past the first hour or so where your character seems really gimped because he is so slow.. but it does not take long to get half decent stats... Yes there are some bugs but over the past few months i have been playing nothing is game braking.. plus the up coming exp seems like its gonna rock..
Anyway as i said there is a free trial so your not loosing anything by giving it a go
if you liked eq1 and eq2 i would probably say go to try vanguard
It sounds like yo uare experiencing a little bit of MMO burnout (like alot of us have over the years).......I just mix in a greater variety of games (console, browser, FPS, strategy, etc) and take a break from MMOs from time to time......
Thanks for all the replies. It must be MMO burnout. Although I haven't played one regularly for quite some time, I've been in and out of EQ2 and seem to stay about 2 months then quit for 4 months, rinse, repeat. I did try the trial of Perpetuum but I didn't pursue it because I didn't have time to play right then.
I'm one of those that still yearn for the magic of EQ1, but realize it ain't gonna happen....but I still cling to a miniscule hope that someone, somewhere will make a world that's fun again.
I mean, I didn't LIKE corpse runs, but it made the game BETTER knowing that there was risk. I miss leveling SLOWLY like knowing it would take a year to get to level 50 and enjoying the content. That's what attracts me to the idea of EVE, but like an earlier poster said 'spreadsheets in space'.
I would still be playing Darkfall if I had found a community there. It had promise.
So on my list now to try is PotBS, Perpetuum (again), EVE (a big MAYBE on trying this one again), Mortal Online...
I like the threat of death with consequences in my games, does that make me sadistic?

Well thats an easy question taking in account your experience in MMOs.
Do like this:
1. Unsub from all mmorpgs
2. Delete all mmorpgs from your HD
3. Forget you have a PC
4. Go do other things that makes you happy. Enjoy the spring and summer. Go out.
5. When GW2 launches, buy it.
6. Be happy
1. Not currently subbed to any mmo's
2. none are installed, just trials
3. I'm keeping my PC
4. I do lots of things that make me happy...hunting, time with the wife, board games with the family, cycling
5. What is so great about GW2?
6. I am happy
Keep in mind that I really don't play MMO's that much. MMO's WILL be a diversion from RL, not the other way around.

Im glad you are happy mate, but i was not saying you werent. My point number 5 to 6 are related, so i was trying to say that when u buy GW2 you will be happy gaming
What is so great about GW2? Well...im too tired to write, so ill link you some stuff for you to decide. If you already know it, i cant help anymore. If you dont, have patience and watch all videos Thank you
