I left(fairly early after introduction) because I finally got into the land where there was rvr..only to find it filled with high level groups of gankers(who preyed on low level solo players). It was simply the worst rvr enviromnent with zero thought about controlling griefers(I'm a long term x DAOC player so I know great RVR and my experience in AION was simply awfull). What has changed...or not changed to make realm vs realm conflict fun ?
Do I have to grind to around 60 to be able to compete on an even footing in RVR ?

I wont lie to you. Alot has changed, but at the same time nothing has changed. It's not the RvR that was broken it was the players who enjoyed the RvR that were broken and you can't fix players. These days you will always have the elitist players who gear themselves to the teeth and pub stomp everything that moves. Now has it become more controlled: yes. With the mentoring system (basically a bodyguard/power leveler) and the mass exodus of players to the new zones you should be just fine to hop back in. No you don't have to hit 60 to be on equal footing. When 55 was the cap there were level 50's that were man handling level 55 players. It's all a matter of gear, skill, and how many pots you have on you at the time. I will say in the new zones there are neutral areas that dont allow for combat between the two factions. Infact there is a city that houses both elyos and asmodians. you bind to the same obelisk use the same flight paths. In fact you can even challenge the opposite factionto a duel; Same as you would any other player. So it's had its share of changes.
Give it a shot
