MO Awakening Update #2

RohnRohn Member UncommonPosts: 3,730

Another update on the testing progress on Awakening was released today.  Looks like some similar activities as before: continued testing of the AI, and a little more information on the progress of the 64-bit client.

There were a couple of screenshots as well.

The full update can be found here:

I followed that game from its inception and I was super excited to play it. But, I have yet to even try it since it is FFA PvP and 1st person combat.

There's a free trial available, so nothing to lose other than your time.

I know what you mean, though.  Personally, the first person view was the main thing I thought I wouldn't like before I first tried the game back in beta.  I've never been much of a shooter player, and this isn't any different as far as the perspective goes.  It really is a very immersive aspect, however, and now it feels odd hovering over the backs of my characters when I play other games - like an out-of-body experience or something.  Now that I'm used to it, the view is one of the things I like best about the game.

Personally, for those on the fence, I'd recommend waiting until Awakening is out and they've ironed out any major bugs, then give it a shot.

Awakening is supposed to come this month, right?

I believe that was part of the initial plan included in one of their earlier statements.  They haven't mentioned a timeline recently.

Personally, I doubt it will be ready for a release in April, and expect it to come out later than that.

Seems like its gunna be another vapor patch like dawn was.

Here's a memory check from Dawn:

They put in a new stat system for horses, so every horse has unique stats.  Sounds cool, right?  Wrong.  They took the old horse functionality and ruined it making mounted combat all but impossible, while buffing mounted archers to absolute easy mode.  The whole reason they implemented this was because 'the new breeding system is coming right after Dawn'.  Well we still haven't seen the breeding system, and all we are left with is crappy horses.  Not to mention the incidents of corrupt GM's giving horses with max stats to their friends, while the average joe is stuck with random rolls.

I use that as an example of how a touted feature can end up in reality.

Tindrem isn't vapor...  it's the content inside that will make or break it.  Simply throwing up some buildings is nothing special.  We know there is a sewer, but will it compare to any of the great dungeons we have seen in other games?  Based on existing content it is doubtful... the current risar dungeon and spider caves are none too impressive and riddled with graphical bugs.

So far the AI doesn't seem to be working yet based on player feedback posted publically.  They have already promised the best AI on the market.  IMO they should have started with mobs in the wild, rather than starting with a complex system like city guards.  Once the open world mobs are nailed you can then focus on the city guard conversion.  I'm worried the devs are grossly misunderstanding the amount of danger that the new guard system will introduce.... I think it's very cool but it will really test the limits of new players.  They should not have switched the city guards without first expanding the features of player keep areas.

No one has seen the new UI, but if it is a reskinned version of the current UI (which is what I'm expecting) it will be a huge let down.

Dyes?  I'd prefer if the existing armors had realistic colors and textures, and maybe some art redesign.

I hope it works out for SV, but I have said it before and I will say it again:  Expansions are the wrong business model for a tiny development team.  They should be releasing small patches, very often.  This way you can test 1 feature at a time, fix it, roll it out and go.  The public gets content sooner, and feels more inclined to sub since they are getting features at regular intervals.

While Psycho is correct, the major appeal of MO is what does work and what is different from so many other mmo's and the appeal of the dream. If I purely focused on what SV has done wrong and will do wrong in the future I would have quit along time ago.
