No Guild vs Guild: Huh?

ChinaCatChinaCat Member UncommonPosts: 670

I like what I've seen of this game and even pre-purchased it.  Great.

I understand the Battleground and WvWvW PvP.  Terrific.

Why on earth would "Guild Wars 2"  eliminate "Guild Wars" from its game?

Thank goodness I have TERA to play for open world & GvG; so frankly, not a big deal.  I'm just shocked and hope they add this in an expansion.

Any one have some rational idea why a core aspect of any PvP-Centric game is missing?

Guild Wars doesn't have guild wars?

Here is how you do it. Make a guild. Have the guild join WvW and have a war with other guilds. Simple?

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Come  on, you must understand my point.

This is a PvP game.  Let's say my guild and yours has a rivelry.   How do we fight each other?

Like mentioned, there are bound to be many guilds battling it out in RvR. On the flipside of things, you can also make a 5v5 competitive team and call yourself a guild in that.

Guild vs Guild, Team vs Team -- What's the difference?

  • natuxatunatuxatu Member UncommonPosts: 1,364

They might have Guild vs Guild  in the future however it's not called Guild Wars because of that. In the lore there is an actual war between guilds such as the White Mantle and Shinning Blade Am Fah and Brotherhood ect..

I'm sure you could also host 1vs1 duels amongs guilds.. that could be pretty fun actually.. or maybe you'll make enemies with other guilds in WvW :)

While guild vs guild was fun, I don't mind that it isn't in this yet. By the time it does get implemented if it does, it should be awesome.

People don't want fighting on their doorstep, they want a nice safe zone to PVE etc, and a zone to battle in. Then also a more fair much smaller arena to PVP in. Anet's hoping to please every crowd, or at least as many as possible, in one game. And it just might work, or it might be boring...not sure yet myself.

  • mmoskimmoski Member UncommonPosts: 282

Yup, its true many of the great things from gw1 have been left out, esp when pvp is concerned :

    No guild halls

    No Observer mode

    No GvG ladder

    No ELO/rank system

    No Hall of Heros

    No Team Arena

    more and more...

Now we dont know if this is due to release pressure or if they have been scrapped to make way for Anets vision of GW2, but its a real shame many of the things that made PvP great in GW1 have gone, lets hope they bring things back later, if the community calls for it .

"Guild Wars" refers to a period in time when lore "guilds" fought each other iirc.

Its about lore, not a mechanic of the game.

Hey at least most of you folks get what you want.  I keep begging for a game where I can fight someone that is different than guys on my team.

Haha yah lets just make stuff up... haha, you do know that the Pve portion was tagged on the end of GW1 after they finished the pvp content, the original design had no pve at all..

This makes a lot of sense.  Thank you.

I don't like it, but now I better understand it.

Hopefully if there's enough success they may consider a few servers that do have GvG.  It would make the expansion very attractive to many I'm sure.

Well... typically what happens in my experience (Keep in mind I only have 15 years experience with GvG in MMO's) is that it starts out GvG then alliances start to form, forum campaigns begin, and in the end it becomes half the server vs. half the server with the smaller guilds being left at the way side.

Once the "Great War" is over people complain about the lack of meaningful PvP until the next "Great War".

I have yet to see this not happen in any game that offered some means of having significant GvG PvP.

So it doesn't bother me to much skipping straight to the meat of GvG PvP considering it's what most of the PvP crowd craves. These small skirmishes don't mean much to most.

That was a mighty big "tag on".

Its 250 years later and the human kingdom of kryta is finally at peace with with an end to the guild wars...bla bla bla..

Eventually they will have to bring back the "same server" GvG if its not already planned, in GW1 that system of GvG is still one of the best and coolest systems ever implemented and helped make the game popular...

WvWvW and tourney style PvP is awesome but as it stands imho the game does not justify or live up to the name "guild wars 2" without the Guild vs guild wars maybe they should have just named it TYRIA: after the guild wars..

Dont get me wrong the game is awesome but it will be missing something huge that guilds will eventually bitch about maybe sooner than later if they dont utilize a system for same server GvG that they started in GW1 and that put anet on the map...

    Playing GW2..

GvG in the original guild wars was just another form of 8v8. Just because it had the term "guild vs guild" doesn't make it different than team vs team much like heroes ascent was.

GW2 is giving actual guilds the opprtunity to go large scale and compete with other guilds. Wtf is all this idiocy coming from?

Edit: To add in a little more. Yes there is GvG, it's just what you make of it. If there is something to miss, it's all the awesome maps and gamestyles the original game had. But saying there's no gvg is horse shit.

So, guilds can compete in large scale PvP, but can't declare war or challenge other guilds directly? In a game called Guild Wars?

Im so into GW2...i mean...its the next miracle drug for me. But, yes, i fully agree with the stated above and its a shame that ANet devs, even being clear that they made an effort to include many small important things from GW into this new game, it seems to me that they are scared of implementing all the things that makes GW a great PvP game, just because they r old concepts and not "groundbreaking" ones.

To ArenaNet: dont be scared. We all know you guys are great. Just add all that good stuff into GW2. I dont care what the press says. I just want to have fun.

    edited: i suck at english...

I played Star Wars and didn't have to fight one single star.

If you don't like the thought of basic RvR with competitive guilds, perhaps not. Hopefully they will add in a fuction for two seperate 5mans to go against each other. Or you could do what we did in DAoC and put together your 8mans (or 5 mans in this game for that matter), or however many you guys decide on, and agree to a place to go fight in the vast space there is in open world.

We actually had a huge community of competitive guilds in DAoC where everyone was on IRC and we'd roam around as a single team. And if another 8man came about and saw two guilds/teams fighting, they usually left them alone. It may not be spoon fed to you right off the bat, but like I said, it is what you make of it.

I don't know if a rivalry in WvWvW PvP can exist, but I know guilds can hold keeps from what I've heard and seen so far.

Agree 100%. Team arena, GvG and the elo rankings was what made GW1 PvP so epic imo. Without those, and no spectator mode slated for release, GW2 just isn't looking like an e-sport quality game at the moment. I can only hope that those will be added VERY soon after launch.
