Can someone explain the lore of guild wars 2

ereyethirnereyethirn Member Posts: 79

I just decided I'd buy guild wars 2, it looks like an awesome game I really look foward to it. The thing I'm interested in in the lore, the setting I see as just another fantasy setting (exept with possibley the coolest playable races ever but thats beside the point), so can anyone tell me what the story of guild wars 2 is, why we are there, is there something trying to destroy the world, are we trying to stop someone from conqoring the world? I heard something about dragons being a large part of it, however google was unable to tell me anything. Can anyone give me a rundown on what the lore is or give me a link to an article (by arenanet or otherwise) discribing what the lore of guild wars 2 is?

Sorry for the badly written question, I wasn't quite sure how to word it.

ANything anyone can tell me would be helpful

Thanks

Ps Im not interested in anyone saying anything about gameplay or the likes in this thread which im expecting people may, I understand everything I want to about that. I just want people to explain about the law of the game.

If you want some basic lore you can check out the Guild Wars wikis.  They've got some good lore articles on at least the guild wars 1 wiki (haven't really looked much at the wiki for the sequel).  If you're interested in some well written articles on the intervening time between the 2 games I'd check out The Movement of the World and the Ecology of the Charr articles (found on  those same wikis).

If you want to experience the lore from the perspective of the game (and have enough time to watch) you could check out the youtube channel for Woodenpotatoes.  He has done a pretty decent lore heavy playthrough of all GW1 campagines.

Depends on what lore you are looking into. I could give you a rundown of things from GW1 but they are for the most part irrelevant to what is happening in GW2 since it has been 250 years after the events. The biggest difference being that GW1 had a Lich that used a powerful scepter of Orr (Orr being one of the three human civilizations that has been completely destroyed) to summon powerful entities called Titans which would take over Tyria and destroy every other race giving the Lich total control. You as a hero stopped the Lich and Titans and saved the continent. Now 250 years later a completely different conflict emerges which is ofcourse the awakening of the dragons and I suppose their will to take over Tyria.

Would also recommend you to read the Edge of Destiny and Ghosts of Ascalon books! :)

Both books are good if you like to read fantasy lore and give insight on the races and the  backstory.

    Have fun! :)

Sounds like you stopped playing @ prophecies (the first *core* game).

Starting from the end of prophecies (when you fight those dragons to get power to defeat the Lich), and expanded upon throughout the various expansions, the story of GW1 has grown quite a bit.

While there is quite a huge time difference between GW1 and GW2, A LOT of the lore from the first game carries over to GW2. Some are just there as throwbacks (landmarks & such which pay reference to the original), others are more engrained. For starters, the dragons which you'll be fighting in GW2 are related to the dragons you learn about in the first game (not by birth, but association). You may be surprised by the amount of stuff you've missed if you've only played the first part of the first game.

Lets not forget all the Guild Wars Beyond content.  Gwen and Thackery getting married, isn't one of the human groups (in GW2) founded by them?  And I know yoggscast did content with destroyers in it, so not all the baddies are gone.

And I'm sure we'll run across a dwarf or two, which if you havn't played GWEN might not make sense.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

    Yep,

There also looks to be some appearances from former Destiny's Edge members. I also read there would be some throwback from some of the other legendary groups (Adventurer's, Order of Whispers, etc.).

The lore seems very much expanded on from the first game, there's just a significant time jump that kickstarts the story a bit.

Ebonhawke is the city founded by them, and Logan Thackery one of the Destiny's Edge members is there descendent.

Destroyers are actually the minions of Primordus even in GW1, they were serving the Great Destroyer who was actually a General in Primordus army much like The Shatterer or Tequatl the Sunless. You actually see some of Primordus at the end of EOTN, and part of Kralkatorrik is visible in one zone.

Someone mentioned the Staff of Orr above. I would seriously suggest reading up on that as well (and its two sister staves) since the lore pretty much say that the three staffs were created before magic came to Tyria.

So those staves are gonna be one of the (speculative three) 'solutions' to killing the dragons.

Another would be the Bloodstones... look into those too on the GW1Wiki.

    Other good topics:
    The Searing
    The Cataclysm
    The Rise of Orr
    The Unseen Ones
    The Druids
The Gods (The Great Dwarf, Dwayna, Grenth, Balthazar, Melandru, Lyssa, Kormir, Dhuum, Mehnzies, Abaddon)
    Glint
    The Eternal Alchemy
    Vantari and Ronan
    The Forgotten
    The Order of Whispers
    The Durmand Priory
    The Vigil

That list is a fairly comprehensive start. It should be enough to get anyone a fairly good idea of what the plot may be.

I thought I read that Orr (Arah) was mentioned to played a huge part in the later end of the GW 2 leveling spectrum.  I am assuming Zhaitan is associated with Orr.  I have no support for it because I don't even know which forum post it's buried under anymore.  http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Zhaitan

So the scepter of Orr and all that seems like it'd be important considering how the Eye of the North campaign ends with a bunch of hints of disasters and events to come.

Guild Wars Beyond though holds a lot of connecting story elements between the original and 2.
