Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts today announced that Star Wars Galaxies is poised to expand for the third time. "Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi-Wan will bring much new content inspired by the third film.
LUCASARTS ANNOUNCES NEW STAR WARS GALAXIES EXPANSION PACK AS FRANCHISE UNIT SALES SURPASS ONE MILLION
Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi-Wan heats things up literally! with all new Mustafar content inspired by Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith Leipzig Games Convention Leipzig, Germany August 19, 2005 LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE) today unveiled Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi-Wan to the cheers of Star Wars Galaxies enthusiasts gathered for a fan breakfast at the 2005 Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. This third expansion to the popular immersive online game is scheduled for release on November 1st, alongside the Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith theatrical DVD and Star Wars Battlefront II video game. The companies also revealed that more than 1 million units of the Star Wars Galaxies franchise have now been sold, a testament to its ongoing popularity. Like Obi-Wan Kenobi after his death, Star Wars Galaxies has become more powerful than you can possibly imagine. Appropriately, Trials of Obi-Wan allows players to better understand the meaning of these final words spoken by Luke Skywalkers mentor, as they embark upon missions delivered directly from the spirit of the revered Jedi Master himself. From the very shores of molten lava where he defeated Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan guides players on quests that span the planet Mustafar some of which might even convert devotees of the dark side over to a more virtuous path. This expansion features many new high-level quest rewards, including the ability to find a fiery red crystal found only on the volcanic planet that creates a lava-like lightsaber for the lucky owner. Players who fulfill all of Obi-Wans directives will also receive a rich reward. Mustafar colonists present many exciting trials of their own, too, as Trials of Obi-Wan includes more than 50 new quests for the galaxys bravest adventurers, from rescue missions to the exploration of a crashed Republic cruiser. Many quests also revolve around a prominent figure from Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic® who returns 4,000 years after his prime with one simple mission in mind: Eliminate all meatbags. With Trials of Obi-Wan being an expansion set for release via digital download the same day as the Episode III DVD, we cant think of a better planet to add to Star Wars Galaxies than Mustafar, said Julio Torres, Producer at LucasArts. Meanwhile, including the spirit of Obi-Wan nicely bridges the prequel era and the more classic-oriented time period depicted in the game. Were really excited about continuing mythology established by other LucasArts games, as well. The release of Trials of Obi-Wan will provide a significant boost to a franchise that has already sold more than 1 million units worldwide. In recent months, interest and subscriptions in Star Wars Galaxies has grown, fueled by recent game additions, as well as the connection of the game content to Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. A lot of positive changes have taken effect since Star Wars Galaxies first launched, said Nancy MacIntyre, LucasArts Senior Director for the game. Weve picked up quite a few new fans and reintroduced many others to the game, especially since the Rage of the Wookiees expansion in May. Trials of Obi-Wan will only further this positive momentum. MUSTAFAR?! That's the dumbest planet to make tbh.
We only saw one duel on that planet and that's all, god, even Dagobah could be more fun.
And talking about volcanics on that planet, that's not realistic to see 100+ on some mining platform.
SOE has gone bit too far imo.
Lol poor sony they can do no right in peoples eyes
If only they had stuck with their original plan with jedi permadeath (blue glowies) swg might still have been omething to invest time and money into.
I wouldnt exactly call 1 mill sold copies over the span of 2.5 years a success, considering the giants SOE and Lucasarts are behind it, id more look at it as a huge failure.

MMOs Retired From: Earth and Beyond, Project Entropia, There, A Tale in the Desert, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Eve Online, City of Heroes/Villains.
MMOs Currently (worth) Playing: None.
MMO hopefuls: Age of Conan.
1 million copies sold, and 750,000 thrown in the trash....Too bad SWG has low player retention.
So an expansion that caters to the Jedi?? Where did this all go so wrong?
I wonder if you can walk on the lava like you can at the volcano on Lok.

Dude, when I read that part I thought FOR SURE that it was fake.
Man, I don't even play SWG and this thing pisses me off..
SWG is a fun game, if you can stop taking yourself and it so goddamn seriously. If you don't like it, don't play it and GET OVER IT. One great thing about SWG is you won't have to listen to any trolls, they all trust everything they hear on the internet and wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot deep sea trolling rod.
EDIT: part of post deleted in respect to moderators.
Well my additude towards SOE and Lucasarts chagned alot. I realized this all advertising at its most amazing. And the best part is the players are paying to play in this commercial.
But with mainly jedi content I think they might have shot themselves in the foot this time. More love to jedi and bugs and smugglers still untouched? Might as well put the cancel button right on the front of the client so you can just click and go.

Sir, this MMORPG is dropping like a rock in water!
Johny: Throw a new expension ASAP, make sure the most addicted players have content to last them for 2 years while powdering and and until we figure for the mass.
Nothing new here, when SoE see a MMORPG under their control goes wrong, they focus on the minority of player who are in their "high end", in the case of SWG it is the jedis...in the case of EQ it is raiding...and in the case of EQ2 it is the guilds.
If a person know 1 way to swim, will always try this way, even if not the best way...and with the recents changes, SWG is dropping like a rock.
Then they will make a huge pack to interest new players...pack will include all expension except maybe the latest. If you didnt buy SWG and where thinking about joining, wait for the huge pack, it will be a LOT cheaper...not that I recommend this game in anyway, I dont even dare to try it. I am pretty sure even jedis cant solo what they needs, and the spirit of Star Wars is pretty much ruined since CU IMO.
The next expension after the pack will be the LDoN of SWG, so reasonnable players buy the pack and the nice expension.

I laughed when i saw this news. right after they nerfed exp they lost some people. (even my real life friend was bored of SWG now and thought the latest publish sucked)
Stop trolling the forum Anarchyart. If you have nothing constructive to add to the discussion then simply stay in the background and pick your nose, thank you.

Also i'd like to say that all UK magazines have been giving 50%'s to SWG+expansions. This expansion is not what the player base really wanted. Hoth or another planet would of been better, and how about fixing the jedi/bounty hunter & GCW first before adding more bugs to the game?
Just so ya know i played SWG for roughly 2 years(on and off) so im "bashing" it based on my own experiances of gameplay.
Yep, played for almost 2 years, so I guess you got that wrong, eh?
And to the post above that, they've sold over 1 million copies, and yet their sub numbers are ~250k. To me that says low retention, high turnover. Releasing this expansion now only supports this. They need to keep fresh people cycling in as the others get fed up and quit.

Thats what might take on it was. And they are gonna cash in on their nearly untapped recource - Jedi.
I was laughing when I read about this expansion. I realy get a kick out of players raising hell over a game....and I'm seeing a lovely storm brewing on the horizon.
It all amounts to nothing though. The old players will shuffle out and new ones will shuffle in. There is one thing that SOE has overlooked though.....you can only release the game once, and then the hype is over. Building up a player base after release is a pipe dream. They might double their population, at best. SWG will never be competitive with WOW.
SWG is fun? Horizons is fun? I could go on but really it seems like you hop from game to game and never stay in one for very long. Then you attack anyone that has anything to say about the game that doesn't reflect how you think it should be.

Maybe the troll is really you. But then I refuse to call people names either way. Just my observation from looking at how many posts you have made and over 80% have some kind of attack to them.
SWG is a shell of a game it was once thought to be. I find it amazing they would state a new expansion is coming when so many players are disgusted with the game and left. Yes I too have played the game from beta to just awhile ago so don't go thinking I don't understand all the problems SOE has created. I also blame a lot of it on Lucas. But I think the best thing they could do is just shut the game down and make a whole new one with a better engine and making it feel more like the Star Wars Universe.
Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
Looking forward to more content added to SWG. I liked Rage of the Wookiees and if the new expansion is anything like it, this will be a good one.
I do not think - like many posters here in this thread - that this will be Jedi only content. Yes, one Jedi reward has been mentioned, but I am quite sure that 90 % of the quests can be done by any (combat) profession. I may also add new high level (raid level ?) content that has been requested by many players.
The one million sold seems to include basic game, gold basic game, Jump to Lightspeed and The Total experience (including Rage of the Wookiees expansion). Actually player number will be in the range 250 - 300 k according to the more reliable info websites and my own perception.
SWG is one of the few games that gives you the freedom to totally change your character and his profession over time. When you dont fall into the trap of mindnumbing Jedi grinding there is so much to see, to do, to find that you will spend month or years always finding something new. And the community is one of the best in the games I have played so far. The managment and bug fixing of SOE is not the best in the genre, true, however the game is good enough IMHO to provide you with a fun time online.
Have fun
Erillion
You know, they should just change the name to SWG: Jedi Only Need Apply.
The game is so biased toward them it's silly.
Since jedi have their own economy, crafting, and resources that only Jedi need, it makes a lot of sense as to why all the changes have come through. They're simply catering to existing jedi.
Making it harder to become a jedi only caters to those jedi already in existence.
As a cl80 that had seen a lot and still couldn't find fun in killing animals for 1 experience point, I quit because I didn't want to turn into one of the pompous jedi I always saw running around.
My name is...
I think this expansion will finally make it jedi only. If the game survives that long, I am willing to be all other professions will be incredibly rare.
Kai
Looks great, can't wait to play it. (No, I'm not a jedi )
Hoth was the planet I was really hoping for though.
If the expansion reverted a lot of things back to just aftre the launch, then it might be good. SWG was fun to play for about six months...and then the player cities thing messed it up...character revamps and MAJOR nerfs ruined a lot. I liked SWG and hope it gets better but I don't think it will.
