I found I was able to skip areas since there are so many quests available. You will have to do the story line quests for each character (I think). There are no different starting areas so I can't see altitis being that much fun here.
It will pretty much be the same for each character.
I think 1-20 will be the same for each character. I was disappointed in this but a buddy, who won't play because of the Elin/Popori issue, had a good counter argument.
In most games now the first 10-20 levels go by pretty fast as a tutorial. If BHS had chosen to create different starting areas then it would block off that much more land that is unusable when you get higher up and are leveling slower to enjoy it.
The lore does have a reason for putting everyone on the island. They are also adding a "tutorial" to the starter island for a better sense of purpose and improved the cinematics so I wonder how all that will turn out.
The highets level I got to in the beta was 20 (I didn't wnat to spoil too much) but I got about 5 classes to that level, the questing paths were extactly the same for every class...I would hypothisize it would open up as you get to higher levels though but I can say for a fact that your 1-20 expience will be the same as everyone else in terms of questing.
For one, it depends on whether or not you stick to the questing structure. The questing structure very much points you in one direction, but opens up a tiny bit around ~20+ in which you can switch between 2 zones instead of being pointed directly at one.
That said, if you don't mind grinding mobs instead of following the quests strictly, you usually have the option of lvling between ~4 zones or so once you get passed lvl 17/18. This also depends on how good you are about avoiding getting hit. Those better at dodging / blocking / kiting will have more options than those that aren't.

That is a good way of thinking about it. From a logical standpoint, I think it does make more sense to add more variation in content to the uppers levels even at the expense of the lower levels. I suspect the reality of marketing and convincing people to sub is the culprit, here.
Has anyone played it far enough to determine whether or not quest lines are necessary for your character's progression (e.g. class specific gear, rare weapon obtained only through quests, etc.)?

I've played it to lv58 (cap is lv60) and to answer your question. No you don't have to do quest to get rare gear, The only class specific quest for item you will have to do are for master glyphs, if I'm not mistaken that quest is obtained at lv57 or lv58. I would advise you to do the story quests though in order to progress through the game faster, you can skip the regular zone quests.

Necesary? No. Quested equipment for the most part cannot be enchanted (with certain exceptions). Quested equipment, however, tends to be better than same level dropped equipment (low levels being the exception).
If you are big into enchanting, you will never get an upgrade from any quest line. You will however want to do the quest line for good accessories and xp.

Just not worth my time anymore.
