You will be forced to solo most of the game and because a lot of optimal and fun builds require skills from different campaigns, it will be a while before you can get everything for yourself and your heroes. You'll die a lot and you'll be frustrated...

Or when they made pacman they should have just let pacman battle it out against miss pacman. That would have been less restrictive lol. Or in Star Trek, wouldn't it be much cooler to see the Federation just killing itself on Earth? Or maybe a guild could be Romulan, Vulcan, Klingon, Human, vs a Vulcan, Romulan, Klingon, Human guild. Man that's GW2 in a nutshell there.
This is not epic - this is simple minded gaming mechanics. So to answer the OP 's question, there's nothing here that hasn't been done a dozen times already. It's just a carefully marketed Asian grinder if you really look at its concept, animation, and overall focus on appealing to an overseas Asian market (billion + strong).
Why it's so hard for kids and a good portion of pre age 30 players to get that epic warfare is about pitting different cultures and races against one another. Anything less is either gang banging bs (which I can just turn on the news to hear about), or just plain laziness on the part of the developers who continue to cater to the undereducated and easily gratified.
I get that a lot of folks get high and login. This is not fair to the rest of us who are educated, well read, individuals. Smaller minded folks are always going to gravitate toward the easiest "if it's red it's dead" mentality. When are these companies going to make something really epic?

5) Challenging combat. No aggro table in the traditional wow sense. Tank n Spank won't work. Dodge rolls to evade attacks. Hot-swap weapon/skillsets on the fly in combat to allow for greater tactical flexibility.
OK, so let's say I'm a squishy and a boss decides to come after me and not the heavy armor wearing warrior. Is dodging gonna be enough to get out of his way and survive? How can the warrior get the boss to focus back on him instead?
I guess I just don't see the balance between squishy survivability vs no "traditional" aggro table.
Relatively speaking, your squishyness will depend on what Traits you use, someone invested in more DPS traits will be someone who is more squishy then someone invested in more health or defensive style traits. With that out of the way, say you are a squishy class you can do things to kite, use CC or dodge plus rely on your group to assist in gettting out of the way.
Playing: GW2 Waiting on: TESO Next Flop: Planetside 2 Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.
GW2 is designed to appeal to a broad range of players, with out compromising on what the game offers people with different play styles.
The game is solo friendly, but it also removes the barriers to cooperative play, so you will always be happy to see other players show up "in your space" and players can play meaningfuly together, even if the don't formally group. (When more than one person attacks a mob, they all get full XP and loot, as if they had fought it solo. Players get adjusted down in level for lower level regions, while getting loot and XP based on their true level. Dynamic Events always have shared, rather than individual goals and crafting resources nodes are shared as well, so you are never forced to compete against others in PvE).
The main PvE world is PvP free, which is good for those who don't care for the risk/thrill/drama of open world PvP, but there is a massive four zone region for server vs. server vs. server factional PVP, which includes PvE content along with PvP objectives. WvW gives players PvP in large, open maps that provides some of the best aspects of world PvP, with out trampling on the PvE game play of others. (Players are scaled up to level 80, but with their own skills, traits and gear, so while your character development and progression matter, unskilled, (but higher level) players may the lack of clear griefing opportunities disappointing, but most will likely appreciate the more challenging battlefield experience).
There are no 15+ man dungeon raids, nor a dungeon based gear progression treadmill, but there are plenty of 5-man dungeons in the game for those who enjoy a challenging dungeon crawl. Every Dungeon locale has a story mode wing, which can be completed by a decent Pick Up Group, but they each also have at least three explorable (expert) mode wings that will require skilled, organized cooperative play to overcome. Everyone gets their own loot from downded mobs and chests, but you also earn tokens for a successful run. The tokens can be traded in for one piece of special gear from the dungeon, so will always get something worth having for each run.
Structured (arena based) PvP gives everyone a doppelganger of their character that is level 80, with all skills and traits unlocked and access to all max stat gear from the start. The formal matches will all be 5 V 5, but informal matches can handle custom match sizes from 1 v 1 to 10 v 10. There will be ladder based, ongoing tournaments for serious PvP players, but also plenty of informal contests or even casual tournaments for those who just like PvP for fun. There is also a match making system that tries t create matches for people with similar rankings and ratings. (Structured PvP is cross server, so there should be little trouble finding people to play with and against).
GW2 also offers an in depth, branching Personal Story line for those who like story based RPG content. It's optional, so if it's not your thing, you can pass, but it should be fun and rewarding for many. Each race has it's general, shared story line, but the branching in the story starts right from character creation, where you answer biography questions that influence your story right from the start. There are also major decisions for each chapter (every 10 levels) that can branch your story further.
Crafting is pretty in depth for an MMORPG. No crafting mini-games, but room for experimentation and lots of variety on what can be crafed. There is no time grind for GW2 crafting. Your resoruces determine how much you can craft, but the actual crafting process is accelerated greatly the more of an item you select to craft. No more taking 20 minutes to craft 100 nubbins to level your crafting.
There are a lot of other things as well, but those are some of the major elements. I didn't even get into Dynamic Events and the impact those have on serving up content and making the game feel more organic and alive!
This is an honest question.... I have never played guild wars 1. Is guild wars 1 still worth playing? does it have much of a community?
Guild Wars 2: whats it got that other games don't? Why should I play it? I'm at a crossroads with my MMO's. Rift and EQ 2 were just so so. I was a WOW lover. Can someone tell me what the draw is for the guild wars franchise..... I'm thinking of trying it.
Is it solo friendly? Thanks all.
If you love wow, why look at another game? If you are looking to play another game than wow, shouldn't that be enough of a reason to play gw2?
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what
it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience
because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"

It's almost about asking what the game doesn't have!
Guild Wars 2 doesn't have;
- Gear treadmill
- TIme investment over Skill
- raids (instanced, like WoW)
- Grind (there is optional grinding through achievements and such.. but the curve is unlike most other games)
I think those 4 are things that many players hate about MMORPGs, that they will like about GW2.
That's the problem with these video games and why they are not mmorpgs. Race, class, faction restrictions mirrors epic content. According to this, you'd prefer if the Tolkien books had Hobbits and Elves killing each other - you do realize the stories would have been crap, right? How about jedi vs jedi? Or when they made pacman they should have just let pacman battle it out against miss pacman. That would have been less restrictive lol. Or in Star Trek, wouldn't it be much cooler to see the Federation just killing itself on Earth? Or maybe a guild could be Romulan, Vulcan, Klingon, Human, vs a Vulcan, Romulan, Klingon, Human guild. the point is you can be any race you want and not b restricted to a certain class
no factions means no faction imbalances (go take a look at swtor)
its more about server unity, everyone working together
not everyone competing with each other
no mob taging so no fighting over spawns
everyone can help each other whether in pa[rty or not

racial PVP doesnt work at all with the world and mentality of the game... also the asura and sylvari were enemies at first... AND there is actually lore behind the WvW and other BGs.... perhaps you should try being more "well read" and learn about the game you are bitching about.
Another thing... HOW ON EARTH IS THIS A GRINDER?!?!? That is the most obsurd thing I have seen lately... I came from grinders hun and this is DEFINATELY not a grinder. One last thing.. yea I am rambling.. but the whole racial/prof non limit is for us... its so that WE can play how we want not have that dictated to us like most games do.
Becouse he has no clue what he is talking about he just assume and prolly compare with other experience he had with games, but not investigate first what the game realy is all about.
One thing is clear about GW2 its not even close to grinding game and it have nothing to do wit asian grinders at all.
Becouse NCSOFT publish the game don't mean its korean grinder lol. Arenanet are not a korean company who are makers of this game.

To the guy ranting about how not having faction-locked races ala wow isn't original or epic- it's not. BUt that's not why I like it.
Remember EQ? My monk (human, good), used to party with am evil Dark Elf DK, a good aligned high elf mage, and atroll shaman that intentionally grinded himself to neutral or better with as many factions as possible because he liked to get along with people. The itnerplay of the characters was fun, and much like my Shaman friend, -I- could decide what factions liked or hated me based on my actions.
I realize that last feature is largely missing in GW2, but I still dislike how the current theme in MMOs is to split the population into halves and keep them away form each other except for when it's time to pvp. I Get the point aboutmaking some big epic war between sides. But I'd rather the more realistic approach of people from all sides, views, etc being thrown together by chance or fate and choosing their own path.
Best question would be can we name [one] MMO that has everything Guild Wars 2 has O.o?
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.
P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.

GW2 is about a bunch of races getting together to defeat some big ole dragons. There are race divisions. The heroes are fighting against them. They still have animosities towards one another, but they are putting them aside to defeat the dragons and the races who have become dragon minions. THIS, is what the game is about.
I'll be honest, I don't get the open world PVP thing. It's silly. I remember my 1st experience with an MMO was watching my friends family play everquest, and they all got off on hutning each other down and killing them. This was right before our Dungeons and Dragons session. I asked them what the heck was going on? What was the adventure about. They just wanted to hunt each other.
That wasn't the orignal intention of MMORPGs. So the idea of building up players to attack other players in a game where neither player can actually die permanently takes away from the immersiion of the game. It doesn't immitate real world racial rivalries, (I don't know too many cultures who openly attack other cultures, most wars are fought on battlefields or zones).
I don't get the mind set of a gamer wanting to kill other gamers, when you're suppose to be a hero trying to save the world. They want stereotypes. Why can't a Charr be a guardian, maybe this was the guy that siad "hey, i wonder what faith can do for me". What you want is, well this race can only do this. Why is that? GW2 treats races faiirly relatistically, letting you decide if a class is approripate or not. If the real world played out like most MMOs I guess I would be playing basketball and shooting gangstas (I'm black).
I love your analogy, because it's anti your argument. The players are the good guys of the game. We're the ones playing the game. So we are the protaganists. So the real question is what kind of game would we have if the pacmen decided to fight each other instead of trying to kill the ghosts? Sure you can write into their history that they had a fight this morning, but ther are freaking ghosts we need to kill.
You do realize that the concept of STar Trek, also in your analogy, was unity among the races. By the time next generation rolled around there were Klingons in the federation. The federation is the good guy, the bad guys were the other races who attacked the federation, the good guys, the players.
I don't think this argument has anything to do with age. Most 30 years olds i game with (i'm 35) have played real rpgs and don't see any point in pvp. We have a strongdisagreement about what epicwarfare is. Epicwarfare has nothing to do about race. It has to do, 99% of the time, about differences in ideologies. Again, GW2 is about those races supporting the dragons versus us, who are opposing them.
If you understand the lore, you'll know the Charr still don't like the humans. That no one really understands the Sylvari. But these gripes are put aside for the better good of mankind.
Your analogy does not sound very coherent. Why would these factions be fighting against each other when the fate of mankind hangs inthe balance. Why is there an artificial conflict needed when there's already a natural one.
GW2 is not an open world pvp. Sorry. I know that's what you want but its not that game. There are a dozne or so games with open world PVP.
That's the problem with these video games and why they are not mmorpgs. Race, class, faction restrictions mirrors epic content. Well obviously someone has never read the Silmarillion, how about you go and read what Tokien actually wrote before coming back about how "well read" you are?
I'll give a hint, Tokien's books are filled with strife both between and within the childrens of Illuvatar, in fact the entire history of Middle Earth is based on it.
So why don't you go and actually read Tolkien's works.

It does remind me of Skyrim in that you can go anywhere. I like the characters can use multiple types of weapons.
I think the world PvP is going to be allot of fun! I think you can join PvP at level 1 if I'm not mistaken, which no other online game offered that I know of.

If you love wow, why look at another game? If you are looking to play another game than wow, shouldn't that be enough of a reason to play gw2?

Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you playing an MMORPG?"
It's almost about asking what the game doesn't have!
Guild Wars 2 doesn't have;
- Gear treadmill
- TIme investment over Skill
- raids (instanced, like WoW)
- Grind (there is optional grinding through achievements and such.. but the curve is unlike most other games)
I think those 4 are things that many players hate about MMORPGs, that they will like about GW2.
the point is you can be any race you want and not b restricted to a certain class
no factions means no faction imbalances (go take a look at swtor)
its more about server unity, everyone working together
not everyone competing with each other
no mob taging so no fighting over spawns
everyone can help each other whether in pa[rty or not
Becouse he has no clue what he is talking about he just assume and prolly compare with other experience he had with games, but not investigate first what the game realy is all about.
One thing is clear about GW2 its not even close to grinding game and it have nothing to do wit asian grinders at all.
Becouse NCSOFT publish the game don't mean its korean grinder lol. Arenanet are not a korean company who are makers of this game.
Nicely put.
some a-net dev said....
players usually dont "explore" , no quest said me to go to that cave...so i avoid it until quests tell me to go there ....why waste my time killing mobs there when 10 mins later i gonna get a quest to kill the same mobs?
thats whats wrong with other mmorpgs!
and thats why Gw2 is amazing , i can go WHEREVER I WANT TO QUEST , i want to go to that cave underwater? np
want to change and climb that mountain? ok
now i prefer to go into this woods....!
ITS THE PLAYER who choose where to quest ....hell u can even go back and explore zones , your lvl will go down and u will still have a challenge !!!!
outleveling zones? not in gw2!
Electrolytes!
Tingly pixels!
And cat-cows. It has cat-cows too. You should see the size of the goddamn litter box.
Re: SWTOR
"Remember, remember - Kakk says 'December.'"
It's very "skyrim" like in that effect. I can go somewhere and find adventure.
TAnd aren't jedi actually fighting other jedi, just those that have gone to the darkside?
It does remind me of Skyrim in that you can go anywhere. I like the characters can use multiple types of weapons.
I think the world PvP is going to be allot of fun! I think you can join PvP at level 1 if I'm not mistaken, which no other online game offered that I know of.
Game just looks great!
GW2 in a nutshell.
If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a fireball.
( Note to self-Don't say anything bad about Drizzt.)
An acerbic sense of humor is NOT allowed here.
jedi killing jedi happens alot in star wars EU(expanded univerese)
jedi civil war anyone
fallen jedi
jedi being possesed
Something to note is that Gear does matter in this game, it's just that you don't have to raid to get the "best gear".
yes its more about customizing the stats on gear instead of getting gear with better stats
and getting better looking gear
Why was this thread even made when Google has all the answers?
