I was wondering if anyone could tell me how this compares to WoW and EQ2.

I am currently playing WoW but have played both WoW and EQ2 off and on from launch. I am getting pretty bored so I was thinking about trying Aion.

In order of importance:

Crafting

Exploring

PvP

Quest PvE

I don’t raid and have rarely done a dungeon, course that was because I don’t like to put up with rude people so I guess if I got with the right bunch of "a guild is a family" type folks I could get into that.

Thanks for your time.

Crafting - You can take ALL the crafting professions up to a limit and master one of them (or something like that).  Plenty of crafting to be done.  At least as much as WoW standards.

Exploring - Tons of places to go, lots to explore.  But this is a silly thing to consider in video games if you ask me.  Everything is programmed and created by the devs so nothing is really unique or new.  Everything has been seen or done.  You aren't going to find anything amazing or special hidden anywhere in Aion, WoW, or EQ2.

PvP - The game is centered around it.  PLENTY of PvP to be had.

Quest PvE - TONS of quests.  You'll be skipping a lot of them.  There is no achievement system or way to track what you've done so no real reason to do low level quests unless you need the exp.

I'm still newish to it. [lv33 Cleric >w>;  I've been lvling about once a day once I hit 18...I'm lazy.]

But I guess I have enough crafting knowledge to help you...[And I'll try to help in other areas too.

I haven't played either of the other games sadly....so I hope this will help enough...at least until someone who has post xD [I typed this all up only to re-read the top of your post ;;~;; It's 2am...I'm slow right now.]

[Note: My last game I played was a Pay2craft sort of game >w>;; So this game's crafting is wonderful to me.]

For the most part, you can gather everything you would need [minus a few things like you buy from a store clerk there.]  Or you can be lazy and buy it.  [AH or a merchant in that area, depending on what you wanna do.]

Crafting is easy to lvl.  [or I think so.]  You can do work orders or actually make items.

You do have a lvling system with it.  [1-99, 100-199, 200-299 +?]  And you have a different level bar for each craft. [Essencetapping (gathering), Aethertapping (gathering something in the sky),  Cooking, Alchemy, Armormaking, weaponmaking, Tailoring, Handicrafting, and our new one, uh uh...house making...(I don't remember the name xD  It makes stuff for the house though.)]

It takes a while to lvl it but you can make some pretty cool things.  [And some crafting can make a pretty penny.  Others are helpful for your class, just try to lvl it with you.]  Crafting items seem to be better then ones that people get from quest/drops at the lvl of the item. [I can make a lv18 earring, that was better then my lv27 earrings.]  But it does take time.  Lots of time x.x;    Those earrings are like...lv90ish in handicrafting.

[Work Orders give you items once you are done that can be scrolls or materials. I wanna say they are costly since you don't get money back :v But depending on the item you get from the work order it sort of evens out.]

Oh before I forget, crafting also gives you exp :v

And don't do bundles, unless you are in a hurry.

    -----------------------

I'm not sure what you mean by "Exploring" like can' you go into an area you shouldn't be? Sure. :D

    >w>;

    ----------------------

Once you hit 20, 25ish it becomes more pvp like.  I mean, you don't have too [at least I don't feel that way.]  but once you hit 20 you go into an area where the other faction can come in and fight us and vice versa.  25 you get a quest to go into a area each is were "Legions" fight for control over a fort.  Which is all P v P v E.

     ----------------------

Quest aren't bad.  They are like most MMOrpgs I ran into.

Like one of my friends said though, "I feel like their 'slave.'  Lazy f'ers."  You do a lot of "Go talk to this dude" "Go gather these items" quest, but that to me is normal...I'm starting to think I play a lot of grinding games :v  [But like I said, I can lvl at least once a day...and I tend to run around and do 23492384920348 other things that don't really give me exp :v]

There are two types of quest too.  Campaign; "Story quest" And then blue quest which are just inbetween quest.  The Campaign quest, I believe, lvl you faster.  But the blue quest give you nice things sometimes. And if you time it all right, you'll be doing your story quest in the same area as the blue quest.

There are some dngs you need a party, but your first one is just a solo dng.  And then you get another at 37.  So I mean, there are dngs you don't have to be with a party.

THERE ARE areas that you need a group to get through, or wait until you are 10 lvls above the enemies.  You can skip this as well, but if you may run into an issue with someone not letting you finish a quest because you haven't finish the group quest. [I've ran into this issue >.>; Stupid bastard.]

    Thanks for the replies.

For the crafting I was wonder just how helpful the items you craft are. I was thinking about going Alchemy and cooking and my girlfriend going tailor and Handicraft. 1 Cleric and 1 Sorcerer. So thanks for the crafting info.

As far as exploring I like to find out of the way places that are valuable. For instance in WoW there are a couple out of the way vendors that sell recipes for 40ish silver that I can resell on the AH for well over 100gold sometimes more. And in EQ2 there used to be some quests with really nice rewards in out of the way locations.

Cooking is cheap and nice to have.  But I will admit doesn't sell that well. [Though you may not be doing it for that reason xD]  I have sold food, and made a good profit on it...but I was being greedy and made a personal store. xD

Alchemy I haven't touched.  But it is a good skill to have.  To make pots and what not.

Handicrafting, I read, is good for money.  It makes earrings, necklaces, rings, glasses, Poles, and Bows.  Minus the weapons, all are good for any class.  Poles are mainly used for Chanters, but clerics can use them.  And Bows are rangers [Though You can sell the first one you can make for 50k, at least I could.  idk about anymore.]  Handicrafting, personally, think take the longest to start making good items.  So at the start it's a money drain.

Tailoring is good for mages and when Clerics are being dmg dealers, but clerics will use Chain armor for healing.

Here is a link I used when I first was looking into it.  It may help better then my half sleepy self.

    http://www.aionfly.com/2009/06/aion-crafting-guide/

It's old...so things may have changed.  But so far I haven't seen an issue with it.

They also don't have the new crafting...but I don't think anyone has really done it either.

As for the exploring, again.  I don't know.  I haven't ran into any...but I could just missed them. I'm kind of blind like that.  xD

Edit: I'm sorry for my gammar/spelling/whatever you wanna call it.  @.@;  I have gone stupid.  Trying to edit what I see.

Forget about exploring in AION. The game is very linear and has the infamous "tunnel effect" you allways follow a path, there are plenty of invisible walls, cannot swim etc...

PVP wise, well, the game is PVP centered. It's all about pvp.

    Can't say much about crafting.

The PVE questing it's pretty much standard. Kill stuff. Is a very grindy game, not as much as L2 or EQ1 but if you are spoiled by  the WoW leveling curve you will become insane.

Um question, even though the NA version is 'truly free', I've heard some people say you still need to buy some key or something.  Is this true?  I've just made an AION account.

  • ShadanwolfShadanwolf Member UncommonPosts: 2,392

One feature not mentioned is housing. You get a free house at 22. You can buy more expensive ones at auction. Houses have LOTS of decoration ability...you can add some extra storage. They are not instanced. You can make or buy furniture. There are crafting stations in the housing areas.

i say want to know what it's about.....start a character or two.

So very kool mounts in the game.

Not true. The download is free and there is no monthtly fee.  There is a cash shop though.

People telling you about buying a key might be scammers so don't listen.

It is 100% free with some limitations...the limitations can be taken away buying premium 1 month packs which are sold at cash shop or by players for Ingame currency..effectivly rendering the game 100%  free no limitations

This is false the entire game is completely free.  There are no premium packs.  You can spend money in the cash shop if you want to but all content in the game can be accessed without paying a single penny.

Haven't been charged for anything. Never even entered CC information, hard to get charged without that..

not being able to use AH, not being able to trade with other players, not able to expand inventory just a few of the limitaions of Aion free to play model. game is 100% free( which i wrote) but to apreciate it fully some coin must be spent. So my statement is 100% true.

Are you talking about the cube system? Cause I've expanded mine once already though some vendor with a quest in the newbie zones.

Are they actually locking features behind Pay models? I've never, ever heard of a game charging people to just be able to trade.. LoL

At least on full game model.. EVE I know doesn't allow some trading while on trial account..

I don't know not trying to flame you but I'm needing some clarification here.

This may be true of the European version run by Gameforge.  However, the Truly Free version run by NCSoft is completely free.  They do not charge you for any of which you have described.

That kind of sucks.  The NA servers are completely free.  No restictions at all.  No IP block either so if you want to play there the ping might be a little high but it won't cost you anything.

Outside of cooking and alchemy, crafting isn't particularly useful until you hit master class.   You can't really make any of the useful gold gear until you become a master.   I don't know if it's still as expensive, but during the first couple months hitting that master level could take a fortune as it's very RNG based.   I've known people that failed their master level skill quest 5-10 times.   Each try is probably a good couple days worth of straight up farming at max level.   Most crafters had the legion pool them the resources in order to hit their master levels.

Generally, you need a lot of money to start making useful weapons/armors.   You pretty much craft gear that only twinks would use (33 experts, 40 experts) or end game balaric weapons.   All of those require expensive recipes and a huge investment.  It's definitely something you need to dedicate a lot of time and effort into.   If you're just going to make gear for yourself, it's generally not worth spending that much time crafting, as it'd be much faster to farm up the gold to buy the crafted item from someone else or get gear via pvp or raid drops.

I would reccomend leveling up on the new server if you are going to play in NA. I recently started there and it's insanely populated throughout pretty much every level, but you can still get away from people if you can't seem to kill the quest monsters because of them, you just gotta switch channels. The pvp starts mixing in with the pve around level 25 (I think? haven't played past 20 since launch) when you go into the abyss, which is the mixed leveling and pvp area. The reason I suggest the new server if you enjoy pvp is because Rifting doesn't have a debuff like on other servers. Rifting is when you go through a portal alone or with a group of your faction and it takes you into the opposing factions territory. It's best to play without the debuff simply because it made you do 20% of the damage you usually do because they were preventing people who purposely overpowered themselves to go and just annihilate everyone.
