Is there even a date for the next closed beta event? I am interested in pre-purchasing, but I'm not going to if I don't even know when I'll be able to play.
No official word yet, just that it will most likely be before the end of the month. I'm also holding a bit the pre purchase to tell the true, i don't see any reason why to hurry.
Our first Beta Weekend Event will be at the end of this month. We have not announced a specific date yet. ~RB2
So it is starting on the 20th or 27th of this month.
I interpret that as the last weekend of the month. So most likely the 27th.
Yeah, the last weekend seems most likely. I couldn't get them to concede that "the end of this month" would refer to the last weekend of the month, nor could I get them to accept that "the end of this month" might even allow the possibility of the next to the last weekend of the month, but they still refused to just say "last weekend of the month, exact days and times TBD". I really wish the leash on what the CMs can and can not say wasn't so tight, it makes them incapable of speaking the plain truth on things they should be able to speak plainly about.
Prepurchasing gives access to all beta weekend events, so even if the next one happens on a weekend you can't make it, you'll still be able to take part in all the ones after that.
I don't know, but I assume it's at least possible that they aren't going to announce what weekend it is and instead just email people that had prepurchased and tell them how to access it. (That seems like poor marketing compared to saying "Sign up by the 24th to get access on the 27th!!!" but it's not out of the question). If that happens, then you'll miss out on accessing the first weekend whether you wanted to or not.
I guess it all depends on how likely you were to buy the game in the first place, since prepurchasing means you're buying the game, not just beta access. If you're definitely going to purchase then you might as well do it unless you need that $60 right now. If not, then just wait for player reviews from the first beta weekend to make a more informed decision prior to the 2nd weekend.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it."-Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
As other's have said, it will be at 'the end of the month'.
We probably won't get more specifics than that until it gets closer to the BWE. This is most likely, because they are still testing the game, tweaking things, changing things, etc. and they don't want to commit to a date until they feel like they are in a good spot for a BWE. They've promised one every month, so you can expect to participate in one every month. But there's no guaruntee that it will be on any specific week of any specific month.
As long as I get to play a little bit each month, I'm cool. I'm just happy to be able to take part and actually contribute to the final development of the game.
I'm going to say if we don't hear word by wenesday, it's not happening this weekend. Unless they assume we can DL the client within hours and not flood the servers.
Well the 27th weekend would be during the Guild War's 7th anniversary celebration, so that would be pretty crowded to both that weekend but maybe. My guess is it will be this coming weekend and emails sent out tomorrow or Wednesday.
the important twitter qoute is this as an answer to if its on the 20 april
We have not announced a date for the Beta Weekend Event yet, but you'll have download info in time for the first BWE. ~RB2
So far it looks like ArenaNet still have around a day to announce this weekend , without getting to late to actual give people time to download the game.

I was one of those who grabbed the beta client during that brief period when the forum came up(and will have to re-download it, since they announced it will be an entirely new client). I am not sure how much slower it will be with more people hammering it, but it was a little over 11gb, and took me a bit over 1 hour to download...
The real answer is they probably dont even know yet. They likely have an idea of the state they want the game to be in on that first weekend and as another forum post stated they just had a final pre beta weekend(IE open to all the preorder type weekend) test this last weekend to probably make sure all of the server code was working as intended.
I am sure there were problems and they are probably attempting to fix those problems. The speed at which they adress problems that cropped up in this last weekend beta test will determine when the next test takes place. The great thing about being vague when announcing events is that it gives them wiggle room to go whichever direction they need to go - 20th if the game is running great and servers are ready to go - 27th if things need more tweaking. Since we havnt really heard anything else at this point my money would be on the 27th.
On a side note - If your 100% sure that you are going to buy the game you might as well put your prepurchase order in now and enjoy any weekend events that might crop up. If your not 100% sure and your still fence sitting your best bet is to wait and watch and see if any of these weekend events moves your opinion any particular direction.
Im going to say its going to be this weekend and the info will be sent out on wednesday, I say this purely because Wednesday happens to be my birthday and i would quite enjoy a GW2 Beta weekend for my birthday!
However, they've already stated 'one weekend a month' and 'first one at the end of april'.
This means that it's not happening this week, next week at the earliest, but most likely the weekend of the 27th. Also, it's a good thing Anet isn't giving a date in advance. It allows them to focus on testing and improving what they can, and announcing the event when they feel they are at a good stopping point, rather than when they run out of time.

There's a 50% chance it might or might not be on the weekend of the 20th or the weekend of the 27h, give or take 3 weekends...
What can men do against such reckless hate?
I see, thanks guys. I'll keep an eye out for that date.

Twitter is saying "end of this month".
Pretty much April 27 at this point.
