Advice-Former 3 Year Darkfall player needs to know if this game is worthy?

DekapitatorDekapitator Member UncommonPosts: 261

Hello.
I have quit Darkfall because the devs dont work on the game and the population is shrinking
Lovers and Haters of Mortal Online tell me if I should buy this game...I'm gonna start the trial in 1 or 2 days.

I read allot of bad things in this forum about Gm's banning people for no good reason. And this scares me away from the game I don't want to get banned or arrassed for kiling someone on the Gm's clan !!!

Do the Gm's actively play this game , what clan are they in?
How many servers does the game have?

Any advice would be nice. Buy or No and why if possible.

You will probably never be effected by a GM unless you call for one.  GM's are clanless, while there has been some incidents in the past those are few and far between.  The current state of Mortal Online is friggen awesome.  PVP everywhere after the territory control patch.

There's a new expansion right around the corner, with a better guard system, alchemy and some other cool features.

If your looking for a full loot open pvp fantasy MMO Mortal Online is the only alternative to Darkfall lol.. You have no other choice.

Just do the trial. Look up turtorials etc on youtube. Read beginers guides. Cause it's tough out there the first time. Then make up your own mind.

    Seriously.

~but as someone who has done both, I prefer MO much more... oh, but I will attest to GM douchedom in MO.

I made a Blainn character named Snot Ragg (of clan Mucosi) and a GM told me the name was against the rules... in a game with flopping penis everywhere. I took it as a case of simple God-complex and a GM flexing his muscle, because who in their right mind would complain about that. I even had a background for him and everything, told it to the GM, and he just replied "No" and made me reroll. Granted, he did give me *some* of my skills back... but not all of them.

Yeah normally you wont ever see/talk to a gm, unless you are stuck or have some other bug.  And yeah, trial, do it.  I got into Darkfall way too late, and did not want to put the effort into catching up.  Good thing about MO is that it really doesn't take too long to be able to go kill stuff, at least not near as long as Darkfall.  Some skills suck though, most aren't too bad.

I thought there was Darkfall 2.0 coming up, and that's why the current version is stagnating, and as for no other full loot etc mmo, what about EVE? Also aren’t Starvault in constant financial trouble, and incapable of truly bug fixing the game's engine?

EVE is a great game and if you havent tried that sandbox mmo then i agree it should be your first choice. However i usually assume sandbox players already have a good knowledge of EVE since its a big title on the sandbox front and likely already played it so i usually forget about it.

I think the big differences between darkfall developers and MO's developers are as follows, whilst the darkfall devs have the programing compentancy they really lack the overall vision of what makes a good sandbox, were as the MO's develoeprs really do know the features that sandbox players want but their programing is abit hit and miss, with patches requiring further patches etc...MO's developers have stayed true to their design and have a huge list of features to implement, the darkfall devs compeltely abandoned their design right aronud release and threw msot of the sandbox feautres out the window to focus specifically on pvp. MO's develoeprs post regularly about the game, their thoughts and answer questions players ask on the forums, Darkfalls developers remain tight lipped and rarely ever even make a public announcement.

-as for MO being in a financial crisis, i personally raised this issue with the ceo and offered my opinions on what could be done to boost population and his reply was. Right now the developers are focused on delivering what they promised to the community in terms of content, they beleive it most important to have a fleshed out game first and are not particularly worried about subscription fees at present. Afterall the CEO's father owns most of the shares in the company so if he requires more money most liekly he will get it. MO right now is getting ready to welcome its 2nd expansion, awakening promises to add some serious new content to the game and there will be a huge resurgance of subscribers at that time. Awakening will likely release within the next month or so.

MO is certainly more of a work in progress than even darkfall, the game is rougher althoguh graphically it can be argued that it is nicer looking and the tech behind MO has more potential in the long run. I think the main reasons i play mo over darkfall is that its more of a sandbox in that theres alot more features implemented and planned to be implemented that give more possibilities. The develoeprs are quite open about progress and their opinions, the community form a testing group and the game has little to no grind at all.

there are 2 types of mmo, imitators and innovaters.

Thanks all that replied i read all especially deathshroud...
I got good info here. the game is patching atm I should playing in a couple of hours.
Hope its good , brutal and difficult. I'm not looking for a easy time.

I think MO has a ton of potential. I was immediately turned off by DF when I realized that you could max every skill in the game. MO seems to have the concepts right, but it is definitely not newbie friendly. At least when I tried it. I was one of the unlucky people who stepped out of town and got pkd immediately. I tried it for about 3 weeks, but realized I was constantly getting headaches from the first person view while doing things like mining. So I just stopped playing. Decent game and great sandbox features, but some of the little things really bothered me. Hope you enjoy it though. I'm still hoping one day they come out with a real ultima online 2. Same concepts as the old school days and even iso view - just with better graphics and high resolution. Just my 2 cents.

i've tryed to play Mortal Online after Darkfall like you.... its not easy...

I bet you wont stay online long when you realise how buggy it is. Darkfall will look like a diamond after you try MO :)

We can tell you everything about this game, but until you try for yourself you will never really know :)

  • marcustmarcust Member UncommonPosts: 495

    Have they fixed PvE yet?

Personally I think Tera will be much more fun than MO, so I prefer that path.

Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76)
Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe

Recently done the same thing, come from playing Darkfall for quite a long tiem but left as I dont like the direction the devs are taking it.

I really enjoy my time in MO, your character cant do everything at the same time as there is a skill cap and this is a good thing. As no one can be a super hybrid thing like you get in Darkfall..

Combat in MO is a lot slower than the arena pased combat in Darkfall, the combat in MO is more like Mount and blade jsut a tad bit slower.

Spellcasting takes a lesser role in MO, its there but its very basic at the moment but can still be deadly in combat.

Crafting is just awesome in MO so much more to it than Darkfall so many different things can be made at different quality lvls with lots of different materials.. sure there are certain materials that will give the best results but they can be hard to get so maknig a good compromise with different mats can be fun :)

The world design is pretty good and has come a long way since the early beta days.

    Are there bugs?

Yes there are bugs and some can be annoynig at times but nothing really game braking..

I mean Darkfall also has bugs that ahve been around for ages I believe the current one is the stamina bug that everyone takes advantage of so your stamina does not run out... also other bugs in darkfall include underwater mounts running at full land speed faster than boats.. many others as well..

So yeah both games have their bugs and exploits.

As for devs banning people... well from the posts i have seen with people complaining on the forums about getting banned it usually turns out to be a very good reason for them being banned..

Not sure how much time the devs spend in game but they do play, but noe thing i would like to say is that they are very active on the froums posting replies to topics and generally interacting very well with the community and I like that a lot..

There is another big exp pack coming out soon called awakening and this is going to bring new AI into the game and they are expanding on the current PVE system that is lacking a quite a bit :)

MO is a very different game from Darkfall and plays totally different the first few hours are very hard to get past as your character cant mvoe very fast or jump at all but get past the first few hours and you will find an enjoyable game... Well at least i did a few months back and now im running two accounts :)

Anyway hit up the trial and test it out yourself but remember to push yourself past the first few hours to when the game really starts to get good :)

Sorry, but that's far from truth. GMs are recruited from active players and majority of them have clan affiliations. While GMs dont carry the guild tag around them, the incidents of favoritism are not so far between.

Yes the GMs play and it's impossible not to be affected by their cheating. Just read a bit in this forum.

Yes there is a trial, but it's not worth it, unless you aim to feel disappointed and abused. Stay away.

My opinion. If you're thinking about paying for this errrr "software", reconsider it until you drop the thought.

Trial does not help. 14 days ...you will not see all shit in the game.

I am about to end my second week in MO. I have to say for now I have had a lot of fun playing this game. I am actually crafting which is something I really hated in every mmo I have played to date. Ofcourse you have to do some kind of crafting/gathering to make some change.

I will say I wanted to quit after day 2. I met some nice folks however who took me under their wing and taught me a little more about the game. At that point the game got a lot more fun.

Just be prepared to run into duchebags. The one thing I realized when playing my first FFA PVP game was that even in safe zones/cities people will f with you just to be an ass. Pushing you while you are trying to sleep off fatigue, shooting into town and kill your horse but run away when someone actually comes to confront thim. This is all part of the game you just have to get used to and accept.

All and all I haven't had this much fun since SWG, I am hoping the expansion brings some more players back as well but the population does seem pretty decent now compared to some of the youtube videos I watched.

..nah not really. Most people prefer to realize that even the smallest and most basic features like pushing and guard zones are simply broken and move on to better games.

If MO wasnt around and an expansion wasnt coming out soon(with neccasary additions) I would be playing DF.

MO can be a lot of fun. I'm currently subbed but mostly waiting for the next expansion (Awakening) to release before putting in a lot more serious play time. The next expansion is supposed to finally bring in the advanced Artificial Intelligence so that PvE is more interesting and it will allow for new monsters to be added to the game like the trolls and minotaurs from the Alpha videos. It is also going to revamp the UI for the game with a flash based system instead of the clunky UI they have now. That will help lower the learning curve for a lot of players. Also they are adding 64bit support which according to the focus group testing the expansion, has made a big difference in how smoothly the game runs.

Sorry, if you make your choice dependend on whether or not you can push people, I probably can't help you. That mechanic is so annoying and retarded that most games after 2000 simply got rid off it.

You could give Eve a try though. You can bump people there. It even depends on speed and weight or your and your victim's ship. You might even find someone to pay you for bumping ships.

And guard zones are a million times more advanced there too.

Again, sorry, but.. bla bla bla, the next expansion this and that.. lol. Dawn was supposed to deliver the AI. Or was it the Epic patch? Or the Mortal 1.0 launch?
