Hello fellow gamers,
I have been having issues lately with jumping back and forth between several games trying to find the right one for me. I hit a game hardcore for several weeks to a month and then lose interest and move on to the next one. I'm starting to think that maybe it's not the games but the characters in the games that I'm playing. I tend to just pick a class at random and give it a whirl, try another and just keep trying the majority of them till I'm bored. Maybe if I could find a specific game with my ideal class oriented char then it would stick and I could play the game long term. That is if the class itself is well thought out, coded properly, and is not underpowered in relation to the other classes.
I took several "what fantasy rpg class are you" oriented quizes (14 to be exact) and they all had a similiar results - Thief, Rogue, Night Blade, Assassin, Cutpurse, Shadow Fist...etc. Apparently according to my personality, I'm very drawn to rogue like characters. This seemed to make sense to me when I thoguht about it because when I play Skyrim I tend to sneak around a lot, shoot with bows from cover, attempt to backstab whenever possible, love poisons and tend to steal anything that isn't nailed down.
Could you please give me some ideas for various games with great thief / rogue / assassin classes or professions? I would also like to request that the game suggestions be only for games that you can pvp in. Pvp doesn't have to be the main aspect of the game but I would like it to be in the game. Please include WHY you think the subterfuge oriented CLASS is great in that game. I'm not asking about why the game is great - why is the CLASS great in it and what made you enjoy playing it?
I did not list any games that I have already played as to not create any bias in any of the responses. If you list a game I have already played and give valid reasons as to why you think the class is great in that game, I might just try it again and see if I missed anything.
Sandbox or classless but extensive skill tree based games with stealth / assassination / anything rogue like aspects to it are more than welcome.
Please don't post if you have not played the class yourself and are posting just because it's in the game you like.
Thank you for your time and I appreciate any helpful responses you may have.
Oh and as a last remark - I know that Guild Wars 2 is coming out soon and it has a thief class in it. I'm looking forward to that...but it is not out YET.

For thief/cutpruse, I'd suggest UO and EVE as they both genuinely allow you to play that type of character to the extreme.
UO has skills for snooping, stealing, stealthing, creating traps and assorted other nastiness. EVE has enough freeform gameplay that whether you are looking to rob miners, ambush merchants or infiltrate and empty the coffers of mega corporations the sky is the limit.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

I felt that Vanguard had an authentic rogue class. Just my opinion though.
Playing: FFXIV, DnL, and World of Warships
Waiting on: Ashes of Creation
+1
I played a rogue in vanguard and have played same class in other games and this was by far the best of them all
vanguard has no pvp though
The rogue class in RIFT is pretty fun to play, various playstyles at the click of a finger, stealth assassin, stealth ranger, warp rogue, bard, sabateur, tons of different combinations you can fit to your style, most viable in pvp.
I go back to RIFT every few months, and it keeps me hooked for 3 month periods but then I get bored as well, but of every game I have played, and its pretty much all of em, the RIFT rogue is probably the best and most fun ive seen.
The thief in GW2 at least look like loads of fun. Fast action based combat, limited stealth and a design that actually seems a lot more like a p6p RPG thief than what MMOs have. I am not sure how good it truly is yet though, I will know in 2 weeks...
Besides that, EQ2 have some rather fun rogue classes, the swashbuckler is my favorite.

The thief from GW2 looks appealing to me, at least moreso than the traditional "go invisible forever" styles of previous MMOS, but you might prefer unlimited stealth. They still have high burst damage and several tricks up their sleeves, but have a lower usable weapons selection than say, the warrior from the same game.
Why recommend an unreleased game? This is no way helps. The class could turn out to be utter crap when its finally released.
Also, I recommend UO if you play on the felucca side of things. I also enjoyed some of the EQ2 rogue characters though you never really can do anything rogue like (such as stealing from other players lol)
Thief/Ninja in FFXI was alot of fun No real PvP there tho but still a stand up class.
I tend to sneak around a lot, shoot with bows from cover, attempt to backstab whenever possibl
